Succession: With Open Eyes (2023)
Horrible Ending
As many of the reviews on here have pointed out, it was never likely that one of the kids would get it. But what so many of these simpleminded reviewers fail to understand is, that you were never watching the show just to simply find out who gets it or who doesn't; rather, you were watching four seasons of character development to find out WHO HAS IT IN THEM OR NOT. Which leads me to my next point -- why this ending was such a disaster.
...Because we don't actually find that out. Yes, we find out that none of the kids get the coveted CEO spot they all haggled over. But we don't learn WHY. That's how business works? Well, yes, indeed...but that's much too simple of an ending for four seasons of character development.
What if, say, Kendall realizes that he simply can't follow in his father's footsteps? That he needs to carve his own path instead? Or, what if he gets the CEO job but then realizes that, while this is a dream come true, the price to pay for nepotism is that no one *actually* respects you, and is therefore a tradeoff?
Basically, SOMETHING that would be a new experience for him, speak to the dramatic theme, and leave you with a deep takeaway.
Instead, he's just a loser and the audience have no sense of what's next for him (guesses, but no actual idea).
Weak writing.
Mr. Robot: eps1.2_d3bug.mkv (2015)
Give Me a Break
This episode sucked. So much promise to this unique show but unfortunately the writing is lazy and the characters two-dimensional.
Tyrell pays money to a homeless guy to use him as a punching bag since he had a rough day at work -- yeah, okay, I guess that's what your typical capitalist does in his spare time too. Not to mention his wife, who (big surprise!) is in to BDSM. I mean, aren't all desperate housewives? I really love when so-called feminist male writers can't help but paint female characters as being into BDSM. I see this waaay too much on TV these days.
Also, this is small but hey, details count -- Christian Slater's character really chooses to drink an Appletini at the bar? Oook, my intrigue for that character just went down. Those are what 21-year olds fresh out of college drink.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
No One Will Watch this Years From Now
'The Force Awakens' is essentially a fanboy's (J.J. Abrams') homage to the original Star Wars trilogy, full of old-time favorites (the Millennium Falcon! Han Solo's smuggler woes! A trash compactor joke!) and updated with PC casting choices (a woman jedi! Miles from 'Lost'! A black lead!). Unfortunately, while Abrams may have what it takes to get a movie as expensive as Star Wars made, he doesn't have what it takes to develop an interesting story. The film is full of convenient plot twists (Finn crashes in the desert of a planet he's not familiar with and nonetheless manages to find who he was looking for in a matter of minutes; Rey has no trouble utilizing her nascent jedi powers, even though Luke had to undergo significant training with Yoda to use his), as well as cliché dialogue (while their ship's under attack, Han Solo remarks, "This is not how I imagined my day would go!").
In order to develop a story on par with the original trilogy, you need a writer who's genuinely INSPIRED to do so, not someone who simply WISHES they could.
Oh, and there was also a character with a Scottish accent, which just made no sense.
