Buster's Mal Heart (2016)
Psychological Thriller
A beautifully thought out and edited film with superb acting. We travel intermittently through the past and the present ( thanks to the writing and editing, it's a coherent journey). The pace is slow and gradual, and as we move back and forth through time, we bear witness to the results that life's challenges can have on human minds.
Between Worlds (2018)
The Worst
The script, the direction, the acting, the storyline, the editing, the plot -each is so bad on their own. Viewed together, it's not impossible that this is the worst movie ever made.
Maniac (2018)
Jonah Hill Shines
Stellar performance by Jonah Hill in this sci-fi fantasy about artificial intelligence, a team of scientists, and their test subjects.
Mimosas (2016)
I don't get it
My heading says it all. Although the scenery is beautiful, I must admit that I don't understand the messages throughout this film and if there is any message the film is supposed to leave me with. Yes, the scenery is beautiful and beautifully filmed, the actors and some scenes made impressions on me, but overall I don't understand the relationships between varying scenes and the overall point of the film.
Time Out of Mind (2014)
No Man is an Island..Unless He Is
The noisiest quiet film I've ever seen. Oren Moverman is like a conductor of an orchestra wherein the ceaseless sounds of city life and the all-enveloping silence of loneliness collide to create a thought provoking study into character, meaning, and priorities. Richard Gere, Ben Vereen and Kyra Sedgewick all perform perfectly with the dull shine of tarnished silver.
Una pura formalità (1994)
Brilliant Psy Thriller
Pure artistry. An evenly paced, suspenseful, bewildering and beautifully crafted journey leading to a revelatory finish. Fantastic!
Everest (2015)
Simply Straight Forward
A simple and well told story of an actual event. My favorite thing about Everest is that the film makers simply tell the story. They relay to us what most likely transpired with the various mountain climbers on this death-defying excursion to the best of their abilities. This is a true story, and some climbers didn't make it down, so there were obviously some liberties taken as to why certain decisions were made and guesswork as to possible conversations between the climbers. There is sentiment but it's not overdone, there are incredible scenes of the challenges faced on the mountain without the over-the-top visuals so often created by Hollywood movie makers. The movie is like a documentary that's been turned into a movie without any unnecessary story lines added in.
The Suicide Theory (2014)
Good Movie
This is an entertaining film with fine acting by the two lead actors. The film is dark and contains violence. There are a few philosophical themes that run through the story line - the question of whether or not fate rules our lives and destinies, do we make our own realities, friendship, love, psychological damage, fear -and these provide food for thought as we follow the main characters and the twists and turns of the story. People who watch similar stories with similar themes will probably be able to figure out some of the twists and possibly the ending by abut 2/3 through the film, but it's still an entertaining film to watch through to the end. I also enjoyed the music in this film.
