Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
Netflix tries but fails again
No tension is build up to keep you thrilled in the moment. To the end it got some more horror but overall this was not scary at all. Not even a jump scare made me actually jump. A few jokes made me laugh. But this not a comedy, so just use the R rating and make something out of it. I hope the other two parts are not that boring and have more serious horror.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
Funny but chaotic
The story of "The Big Lebowski" felt very chaotic while watching. Sometimes I could not see a common theme in the story, and that is probably what made it a bit boring at a certain point for me.
What is better than the story itself are the characters and the dialogues between them. This is what gives this movie its comedic value in my opinion. Memorable quotes combined with a great cast. John Goodman as a Vietnam veteran who sticks to his past and Jeff Bridges as a jobless hippie who wants to be called "The Dude" were a perfect casting choice. It felt like those two were born just to play these roles.
Ethan and Joel Coen created something that today still holds as one of the best comedic movies. I think watching this a second time will make it funnier than it was the first time.
That's why "The Big Lebowski" (1998) gets from me 7.0 out of 10 points.
Tomb Raider (2018)
Wasted Potential
You could have made much more out of the videogame franchise or create something more original out of your own hands. The story was very standard and the characters were held simple. There was nothing new, the dialogues predictable. Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft was acting-wise not good either. The movie has its action-adventurous moments but there was no tension that captivated me. That's why "Tomb Raider" (2018) gets from me 4.0 out of 10 points.
Shutter Island (2010)
Excellent Psychological Thriller
Based on the same-named book, "Shutter Island" (2010) tells the story of detective Teddy Daniels who has to find an escaped patient from the Ashecliff asylum. But the island has more mysteries than initially thought.
Martin Scorsese perfectly combined tension and a plottwisty story, creating an outstanding psychological thriller. The movie also shows us once again Leonardo DiCaprio's remarkable acting. Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley give their characters the needed authenticity too. The music and its dark tones shows the setting from a grim side but the cinematography also captures the beauty of Peddocks Island (where the movie was partly shot).
With all this, the minds of the audience gets soaked into the world of Teddy and his partner Chuck.
That's why "Shutter Island" gets from me 8.0 out of 10 points.
Secuestrados (2010)
Intensive, Thrilling And Brutal
"Secuestrados" (2010) is a quiet brutal, intensive and thrilling horror movie. Though the main concept of the movie may be not very inventive, the execution and the style of cinematography even more so. And with an acceptable acting, the home invasion movie "Kidnapped" gets from me 7.0 out of 10 points.
Ready Player One (2018)
Action and Adventure and Easter Eggs and Entertainment
"Ready Player One" (2018) is an adventurous science-fiction film, in which people can enter a virtual game-world away from the dystopian everyday life. The developer of the game made a riddle. Who solves it, gets the control over the game and thus improving their life. Steven Spielberg is the director.
First of all, it needs to be said that those who read the book will probably see this movie with a more critical eye for obvious reasons. I did not read the book, therefore I can only speak for the movie.
But there are already some problems in the story. Some aspects do not make sense to me. After five years only one was able to solve a quiet solvable challenge? And near the end, the behaviour of the villain? Lastly, I could not understand the message of "Ready Player One"; I just could not get convinced of it.
Besides these flaws, you get nevertheless an entertaining adventure. The easter eggs of pop culture hidden in nearly every scene makes the movie fun. However, one also needs to actually know those references. Apart from that the effects for creating the virtual world are fantastic. The settings are also incredibly well-made. So, it does not lack in adventure and action.
Looking at the cast, everyone acted on an acceptable level. Tye Sheridan as the protagonist Wade played his role equally well as Ben Mendelson as the villain Sorrento.
If you are familiar with pop culture, love video games or just find your entertainment in action and adventure, you are not out of place here.
That's why "Ready Player One" gets from me 6.0 out of 10 points.
Limitless (2011)
TAKE A TRIP INTO THE WORLD OF LIMITLESS
"Limitless" (2011) is a science-fiction film directed by Neil Burger. The thriller is about a drug called NZT-48 which enables to use the full potential of your brain.
Neil Burger did a good job on finding the perfect pace for "Limitless" and not string the film unnecessarily out. And although the writers sometimes forgot to implement logic into the script, the idea of the movie is pretty interesting.
The idea is based on the "10% brain usage myth" which says that we are only able to use a little part of our brain while the remaining big part is not usable. Today we know that this is not true. We use 100% of our brain. But nevertheless it is still worth a discussion if there can be a drug in the future which speeds our learning process and improves our brain on a whole new level. This topic would give more science into the fiction. Which would also turn the spotlight on the side effects that can arise.
Furthermore, the soundtrack is very well composed ("Happy Pills"). The music together with the picture that zooms in but never ends and other well done effects, it gives the audience a feeling of how the character is experiencing the effects of the drug.
In the end you get a more or less interesting science fiction movie which thrills you till the end to see what life changing the drug is. Bradley Cooper as the main character was a great choice. He was as convincing as the rest of the cast.
That's why "Limitless" gets from me 7.5 out of 10 points.
It (1990)
It has a bad Ending but the Rest is worth to watch
"It" (1990) is a two-part horror TV series about a clown named Pennywise who scares kids in a little town every few years to kill them. In the first part it's about a group of children who gets haunted by the clown. In the second part it's about those children as adults.
Tommy Lee Wallace created with "It" a nostalgic horror classic, especially for 80s kids. Nowadays the "movie" looks less scary, not least because of the FX and animations. But this shouldn't be a critic point due to the fact that it was only a TV production in the 90s.
The real major point of criticism is the ending of the series. I don't want to spoil, but it is a huge disappointment. In the first part of "It" the plot was thrilling and it's ending was rounded off well. But the second part failed through its showdown. Part 2 is weakened by the adult cast too. In spots, they played their roles a bit bad. However, Tim Currys performance as Pennywise is outstanding. The cast of the children is also very authentic and as a group they go very well together.
That's why "It" gets from me 6.5 out of 10 points.
