Skylines (2019)
Not quite there...
As a comparison in quality, suspense, acting, I'm taking into consideration Dogs of Berlin, since this is also a German Netflix production, and the series is pretty decent. (8/10).
This one here, Skylines, is truly a mixed bag. A combination of good a not so good ideas, but the ones that are good are very predictable. If you a musician or simply enjoy rap, you might like this. This was one of the only points that were more of less interesting, specially if you a producer yourself.
The first season is endurable, but it lacks any kind of suspense building up, and also here is non when passing from one episode to the other. There will be clearly a second season, but to be honest I doubt I will pick up where I left.
All in one, watchable if you don't have high expectation or want something special. Skip it or watch it. The first episode it a good measurement on what to expect the whole first season. Episode by episode. It stays the same. No more, no less.
Criminal: Germany (2019)
mind-boggling ...
So, after Netflix suggesting me this series ( and I must confess never heard of "Criminal" before), I almost instantly pressed play since I'm a huge fan those types of series, specially if interrogations are the main focus.
20 min in the very first episode, and I was already checking the time, in order to see if there would be any development, but unfortunately, the only trigger was in the end, and a very light one. Started the second one hopping it would get better, but, oh my, same dry hollow and predictable development as in the first episode.I even watched the third episode, or better; tried, but.. hell... I truly never saw such predictable and hollow series like this one. The acting is more or less fine. Almost as good as a very low budget B movie. But that's not even the kicker here. The script, the scenario.. so shallow... uff.. it's depressing to watch seriously..
I reckon that if for some reason you like the "Criminal" series, you might enjoy this one. Somehow. For anyone else, please just avoid and spare your brain-cells to commit mass suicide.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
A biopic that bit the dust
"There are amazing stories about Freddie Mercury," he explained. "The guy was wild. " However, Baron Cohen learned that these stories would not make the film. "They wanted to protect their legacy as a band."
- Baron Cohen
That said, and having watched the movie with zero expectations since Sasha dropped the project, (not because of him dropping but for the reasons explained above), I must just confirm that he was dead right. Actually this movie could have been directed by Disney. This movie failed on so many levels, including massive distortions of well known facts that it is almost depressing to watch. Besides all the distortions which include the revelation of his diagnose just prior to the Live Aid performance, the band is characterized as angels sent to earth. There is not a single point in the movie that focus on the chemistry between the elements, and everything is reported on a very superficial level, that is actually sickening to watch after a while. The shots feel loose, and not connected at all, focusing just on some key events that are both distorted and close to the actual thing.
For those that know the Biopic of Jim Morrison "The Doors", let me saw that that's what a Biopic should be like. Admittedly, being a bit far from perfect, a movie from the 90s actually trumps this one completely, and in every single aspect. In the end, it's not even about the lack of explicit or let's say, a more deeper look in to the wild side. It is the craft itself that failed completely. From poor dialog to the plastic cast, from the bad writing to the loose direction.
I fail to completely understand all those high scores in here, but I guess they are; a) people that actually never saw a lot of movies in their life, and; b) not true Queen fans. Would this be the case, the score in here would actually match those of the critics. As a Queen fan myself I'm kinda disappointed, but again, I wasn't expecting much to begin with.
Doragon Bôru Sûpâ Burorî (2018)
Simply incredible!
Simply incredible, and without a doubt the best dragon ball movie to date.
This movie is a complete revision of the original one, and it works so good. The animations are spot on, the storyboard, and everything else. The fighting scenes are the best ever to happen in all the series or the movies. This is just Amazing.
The only downfall is the composition of the movie. Initially all the material was about 3h long, and they had to cut it down. And you kinda notice it in the first half. For that only a 9/10, but I reckon once the Blue-Ray version is out, it might be a solid 10/10.
Mandy (2018)
It's not about the story.
I read a couple of reviews in here, but not even the 10/10 seemed to recognize what the movie is all about. This movie is not about a story, since it is completely secondary in this case. Essential, complementary, but not the focus.
Take a look at the title itself, and you will realize that it's about someone that is having a surreal "bad" trip. And this is what the movie is all about. A drug trip in form of a movie.
Stunning visuals music execution and vision from Panos.
I totally recommend this movie, but don't expect this to be a movie movie where the story is the focus. Instead expect a drug trip in visual form, in form or a movie by the protagonist. By Nicolas Cage.
Mindhunter (2017)
Seriously? Holy cow, what a complete MESS!
Well, actually I don't even know were to start. Mindhunters from the trailer looks promising, and being also a Netflix series, was kinda promising, at least quality wise. Boy was I wrong. Right in the middle of the first episode, I was already with this "humm" feeling, because it was just an illogical mess. Characters are totally unlikable, dumb, and almost an offense to all our "knowledge" of a person is. From FBI to the most regular person in the series, it just does not fit. To be honest, I still gave it a go, since well, it's the first episode right? So, during, or almost in the middle of the first episode, and even trying to avoid the non-logical characters, dialogues, and other non-logical things, I kept on watching. Oh sweet faith...
To wrap things up, just take a look at this situation. Agent meets girl at the bar, have the most stupid and awkward conversation ever, go then out after a long while, she gets in her car with him do drive away, but the car is just parked in side of the road, basically blocking all the street since on the other side, cars are actually parked. "Well, but this could be some type of setup" you might say. Well, yes, but there are plenty of scenes just like that, like for instance; filming shot starts in a restaurant/bar, one agent is actually grabbing and putting salt on the food, and after 3 sentences of dialog (actually no more then 10sec passed), he just points to his watch, like, time to go, so the other one asks for the bill, and quickly decides to put some coins on the table, while they all went out. Sorry, this is just totally illogical in every point of view. Having noticing this type of things, and believe me, there are plenty in just two episodes, and in combination with the lack of personality of the characters, and their non logical behavior... oh boy.. I actually felt a bit insulted, but anyway..
I watched the first episode, and as I said, about the middle, I just wanted to stop wasting my time. I came to IMDb to see if there were some reviews that had a different point of view, and there were actually like two stating that the pace goes up in the second episode, and that they got hooked. I must agree that the pace went a bit up. Still, everything else remains.
This series is a total, and complete mess, and I won't be seeing it anymore. The irrationality of this just break almost every bar on what not to do in s series. Awkward behaving characters, dialogues, interactions, cuts, ( THE WORST! Intro I ever saw, (not visually but sound wise), and absolutely boring. What a mess.
I'm actually giving this a 3 out of 10 because of the idea that could have turned into something good actually. Nevertheless, I can only say that you should avoid this and not waist your time. If you still want to give it a go, then go and watch the first episode. If the pace is all you were concerned, and the rest was good/amazing (for whatever reason), then by all means, keep on watching. If you have kinda mix feeling about it, then please, don't waist another hour.
Chariot (2013)
Surprisingly good B-Movie!
Make to mistake, this movie is a typical B-Movie, but one, that even with all the obvious plot-holes keeps you absolutely entertained for the whole run. Visually this movie is great, and the acting it also actually spot-on. The story is fresh, (or at least more original then most of the A-Movies) that we all know. But again, this is not even news, since B-movies got more to prove then all this typical Hollywood flicks. Anyways, the only bad, or not so good part in all this, are the details, not even the story as a whole. Many things seem just completely illogical, as for instance the reaction of the characters to specific dramatic situations. Even thru the flaws in this regard are in my opinion the only big major problem, it will not bore you the slightest. This movie actually managed me to keep me watching to the very end, ( something that Black Mass (2015), totally failed me to do. And that, says something.
Overall, a great B-Movie to watch if you want to kill some time. I'm giving this movie a good 6/10 just because of some IMO big irrational flaws in the script. Otherwise, it would be even a solid 7/10!
PS: don't skip the credits!
