Army of Frankensteins (2013)
Fun horror/sci-fi
I went into this movie expecting it to follow so many others that have tried to take this road recently... cheap special effects, poor -everything... but I was pleasantly surprised. While it is obvious that this is a low budget movie most of the choices made were conservative. They didn't overuse cgi, and they didn't have idiots as the main characters. The story was rediculous but the execution was a decent attempt. They even pulled off having a kid as one of the main characters, without having it deter from the main plot. I thought it dragged a little in the third act, but the humor was higher quality than I expected, and the practical effects saved them from being lumped in with those other monster movies being made right now. If you like b-horror, definitely give this one a try!
Lights Out (2016)
Watch it with the Lights Out
A good horror film that is simplistic in its scares and creative in its relationships. I get tired of the same old tropes, and I felt the characters were well written and acted. The ending was powerful and they didn't make you cringe with one last scare...which keeps the focus on the important things. The effects really got to me, while it wasn't the scariest ghost I've ever seen on the screen I couldn't help but loved the way she appeared and disappeared. She wasn't overpowered or too weak, I felt there was enough back and forth with the different characters gaining the upper hand in a believable way. I was kind of surprised a pg13 movie delivered as much high tension as this one did. Kudos to the director, and actors and everyone involved. The idea was surely not original, but This could have been much worse. T
he end result was enjoyable and well finished.
The Year Without a Santa Claus (2006)
Potentially great, falls flat on a low budget...
This is definitely a guilty pleasure movie of mine during the holidays. Yes, it's bad... but it's glorious. Such potential here with a great cast and decent acting. I am amazed they were able to get the talent they did, but the performances were surrounded by a low budget production that distracts from everything done right. The song and dance works because it's so over the top. The new and updated story from the original doesn't bother me (too much) but it would have been nice to see more of Mrs. Clause. If you like cheesy Christmas movies and just want to chill out for an hour and a half this is perfect. If you don't like silly movies or can't put up with low budget films then it's probably not for you.
Better Watch Out (2016)
Good Christmas Horror Movie
I was blown away by the twist, and that should not be given away, so let me just say this is a low budget horror - but it's pretty well made. If you don't like the subject matter you'll never like the film, but if you're open to genras getting twisted you're in for a Christmas treat. I've seen a couple others in this category recently and this is one of the better ones.
Paparazzi (2004)
Decent Action / Revenge Movie
I used to love this movie and saw it again recently. While it hasn't aged as well as I hoped, it's still pretty good. When Beau Laramie's family is put in mortal danger, he is let down by a slow justice system and a psychiatrist who has no sympathy. He takes matters into his own hands. His first "revenge kill" starts as a bike accident but while it seems he's obviously trying to help, Mr. Victim #1 taunts him and Beau let's go, which gives him the idea to continue seeking vengeance. It's a little cheesy but it's still entertaining. I don't understand all the 1/10 reviews, this is no where as bad as some of the other so called films out there.
There are lots of cameos which is fun, and I thought Cole Hauser did a fine job of walking the line between likable father and man you don't want to mess with. The cops eventually catch on to the truth that Beau was trying to tell them the whole time, and Beau is able to restrain himself from killing the last guy so I guess that's some kind of redemption? It would have been interesting to see a sensual where the cops figured out he was involved but it never happened.
Fire Twister (2015)
Not as bad as the others...
While this movie isn't as hot as your average summer blockbuster, it doesn't suck as much as some of the other wanna-be disaster movies out there either.
You can judge how good or bad the effects are by the look of the fire. It doesn't interact enough with the characters, that's a big negative, but it doesn't look like a cartoon either. The practical effects worked pretty well here too...the really bad movies can't pull that off either.
Some of the plot is actually funny and well written. I kind-of missed all the puns and obviously lame jokes that some of those other tornado movies throw out there, but this movie tried to walk that fine line between ridiculous and fun and exciting, and I thought it did pretty good.
When you watch a lot of bad movies for fun it's easier to see how they stand out or fail in their own way. If you watch this movie just don't expect a well funded flick. Expect a goofy knock-off and you'll see it's good enough to hold your attention through to the end.
