Death Trip (2021)

I made it to 16 minutes but it felt a lot longer.
1 October 2021
By ten minutes in, my nerves were shot from noise and confusion.

After an odd and confusing start, we're given what can only be described as loud screeching fiddle that's supposed be background music. It goes on as everyone talks at once.

I muted, used CC, even forwarded. Finally the music stops. (Probably starts again at some point. I wouldn't know.)

Whew. Ok now I can get into the movie, right?

No. These four kept talking and laughing and yelling all at the same time. All. At. Once.

So I again tried the muting and CC but it just didn't stop.

From what I've read here, I dodged a bullet.

Better than expected; I was glued.
1 September 2021
I usually avoid movies that are supposedly shot through cameras of the characters. But most of the time I forgot I was watching one of those movies.

The acting, color, camera work, characters, etc, were all well done enough that it was easy to get immersed in the movie and feel like I was right along beside these adventurers.

I went along with them as they hiked around, made connections and small talk, and found "surprises" along the way. Some discoveries were intriguing; some terrifying.

There are occasional hints or clues that something adding to the plot or subplot will be coming soon. There are also a couple of twists. All of that makes for a scary-fun ride.

It's not perfect (are these people going to eat or drink?) Jack's spirituality became a bit overplayed. And one of the twists left me with a "huh?"

But it kept me on the edge of my seat, scared, and guessing. Check, check, and check.

A special thanks for not having any characters take drugs. That has become painfully cliche, especially in these types of movies.

Read description and you've seen the movie
25 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There was no reason for this movie. They fight a threat, over and over. That's it.

Not even as exciting or creative as a run-of-the-mill formula horror flick.

At least those have unique twists, side stories, details, etc.

This movie had none of that.

The ending was just a continuation of what had been going on the previous hour. Just people trying to escape the threat.

No explanation. No wrap up, no twist, no last-minute surprise.

Almost quit after 10 min. Glad I didn't
15 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As others have said, these guys make a series of unrealistically stupid choices. In the first 10 minutes, the guy that has one working leg decides to climb in 115 degree heat to the top of a small hill made of rocks in order to see if his cell phone works. His buddy goes with him.

Now, this is where I almost stopped because any thinking person would decide the non-injured guy will climb the hill and the injured guy will stay with the truck. In case, you know, someone comes by.

Not only that but neither of them looked at the phone the whole time they were walking. And he wouldn't be able to make that climb with that boot.

Their decisions don't get much better, but I enjoyed the ride: seeing what comes next, thinking about what I would do, and also considering a bit below the surface of what was actually said on screen.

It touches on changing friendships, lost dreams, life commitments, regrets, relationships, and joy.

Acting was very well done.

The ending: I suspected the writer might pull something like this. But it was done in an unexpected way. I loved the phone conversation at the end.

I'm choosing to believe that the reason behind his disconnection, unsteadiness, and questioning of reality is all from PTSD.

Ending Inexcusably Misses Crucial Information
1 October 2020
After the "incident" is over, the movie abruptly ends. There is NO information about the aftermath. Not a thing about the town, the clean-up, the people, the rebuilding, the town today. No information, closing thoughts, or updates from any of the people interviewed throughout the documentary. It's very odd and frustrating. It deserves zero stars for that alone.

Lots of filler. Senseless dragged out scenes
30 August 2020
This seems to be the type of series one could sink their teeth into. And I did, then let loose my grip because nothing actually happened or there was no reason for the scene.

There would be a scene, shot, or dialogue that looked like it would lead to something, only to find there was no reason for it.

There was so much filler I even started to skip a lot (only 30 second intervals, of course.) This easily could be been a two-hour movie or a two-parter.

All the kids were horribly annoying and two of them I'm sure were psychopaths. The parents need parenting classes.

And as others have said, the ending was a great big "meh." But not to spoil it for you, because others here did seem to like the ending.

Unlikable Lead Character and key piece of story is incorrect
27 May 2020
I got halfway through and had enough. They almost lost me at the beginning because neither of them would've made it onto the ship for several reasons. (I won't give it away.) But what finally did it was that the lead character is horrible-- irresponsible, rude, and unlikable from the very start. There's nothing warm, funny, tolerable, or kind about the character. It was easy to see where this was going, anyway. I wanted to stick around for the ship scenes but she was too unbearable. The one star that we have to give can go Royal Caribbean.

Mary McDonnell acting / amount of characters
24 May 2020
There were too many characters to keep track of. Especially considering there were flashbacks of all these characters when they were younger, featuring other actors. So we had to figure out which younger actor was playing the older character. Which would be fine if there weren't so many characters. Even with just 20 minutes left, more characters are introduced and a whole other storyline.

McDonnell's acting here is shockingly bad. I think she's supposed to be mysterious and sexy but she's just annoying and fake. Her voice, her accent, her drawl -- all horrible and cringe-inducing. Sometimes I had to forward through her scenes.

One thing made it unbearable
23 December 2019
I wanted to watch this movie so bad. And I really tried. But that woman's hair, good grief. Sorry, I can't help it, but it's way too distracting for me. And the producers and directors should've known such an extreme style would be distracting.

They miraculously go from stupid to brilliant
5 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Very early in the film we see a series of clues that Gail and Tom are not the most responsible, brightest bulbs.

The dog has no lifejacket. Gail turns into a giggling 6-year-old whenever Wade talks to her. Wade tries repeatedly to drown Tom, and afterward Tom just looks at him suspiciously.

Gail and Tom are given numerous in-your-face clues that these are "bad guys." Even after they become suspicious, they watch without objection their son float away in the raft with Wade and Terry.

And after all pretense is over, Gail and Tom have plenty of obvious chances to fight and escape, but they don't. When they do make some inane failed attempt, they meet it with an "Aww, shucks" -type response

Even the boy Rourke does the typical annoying movie kid thing by loving the bad guy while hating on Dad, and fighting back when his parents try to pull him away.

So, there wasn't much attempt to make us want to root for these characters. I hated them pretty early on. I only stuck around for the scenery.

Regardless, never fear. By the end of the movie, these stupid, clueless parents have morphed into Supergirl and MacGyver. They also seemed to have developed psychic powers.

Be prepared to shake your head at the stupidity, and just sit back and enjoy the scenery.

Too many things don't makes sense
26 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILERS*

JUST DON'T waste your time. This would have been decent except for some things that were so illogical, they can't be overlooked.

~Main character moves into a building where her friend disappeared. Then her neighbors are missing. She sees blood all over their place. When the detective arrives, blood is gone. She takes charge of their foster daughter, who's traumatized from being in an alcoholic, abusive household and hearing her foster parents scream to death. That night, after all that, she takes the girl and stays there and purposely drinks herself into oblivion because she wants to see what happened to her friend. Because that all makes sense.

~Where is everybody? This is a huge multi-story building and we don't see or hear anyone else other than her and the next door neighbors. And apparently the rest of the building is hearing-impaired and can't hear the frequent screaming.

~The main character continuously tells the detective that something is off about a building she just moved into. She says her friend disappeared from there and others have too. She says there was blood all over the apartment of the missing people. He seems to always believe her, yet he doesn't do any investigating in the apartment. At all. Finally, she tells him she's trapped in the building and there are secret rooms and doors everywhere. She tells him where evidence can be found of what's gone on. He goes to the building. He and his officers take a few glances around and don't see anything so they leave. He learns the little girl has gone missing, too. But we are left to believe he never questioned the girl and that no further investigating was done.
