The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
A good surprise
. When I saw the first trailers of this movie, I really thought that it would be a strange one, I couldn't see this getting much of a success. I actually was expecting it to be just another simple fantasy movie for kids. Yesterday I watched it and I had a big surprise. It's just a wonderful movie !!! I see many people will be comparing it with LOTR, mainly because the same company was responsible for all visual effects in both movies, but while LOTR exceeds a bit over Narnia, it has its own original charm and mood. Many people may dismiss this movie due its obvious Christian references, moved by their prejudice against Christian values and culture. The movie may get some bad reviews due to this particular feature, but it's a big mistake. Apart of that, this is a beautifully-told, engaging and interesting fairytale history, with amazing visual effects and good characterization. I was pleased to see this movie, it totally beats my expectations. No one should miss it.
Crash (2004)
an amazing view of ordinary life
. Crash is a big surprise!!! Simply, in my point-of-view, one of the best movies of 2005. At first, you may think that it's just a pile of different stories mixed mindlessly, but every character deliver a strong, deep message that become clearer when their stories "crash" into other in ordinary situations. And these situations are so well-performed by the actors that you fell like witnessing real life. Camera work also help this feeling, as if the camera was itself a character, reacting to the emotions of every person in this movie. You'll stay a long time remembering and thinking about this movie. Simply don't miss it !
The Legend of Zorro (2005)
fun movie with anything special
The Legend of Zorro is no more than a popcorn flick. Many people went to see this movie expecting to see something of a classic, and they couldn't be more than wrong. The Legend of Zorro isn't a pretentious movie: it's just an average adventure movie, with a little bit of everything you expect to find in that kind of movie: great action, fights, some jokes, some romance, some mystery, and a happy ending. Actually, Legend is a correct production, but it doesn't have anything special, anything that will make you go "wow!". The aim of this production is just to provide some family fun, and it accomplish that objective perfectly. Just have fun.
Acquaria (2003)
could be better, but it's a good movie
Many people in Brazil dismiss the importance of this movie, due to their prejudice to young and popular pop stars like Sandy and Junior, accusing it to be just a commercial movie, aimed to promote their music. Such people couldn't be more than wrong: the movie actually is different from everything that has done before in Brazil. It has a lot of visual effects (seldom seen in Brazilian movies), it doesn't has much action nor long conversations. It's a movie made to delight our view, with beautiful art direction and amazing, poetic (although dry) landscapes. The story is slow-paced, reflective, but the plot just doesn't have enough elements to call you attention, sometimes it seems just too flat. Some important elements in the story just don't receive the required attention, leaving a lot of questions in our minds - I don't know if it was in purpose, to make us think and imagine, but there are just too much of these holes in the plot. Acting also could have been better. Even so, it's a delightful movie well worth seeing, hope to see more Brazilian movies using the same visual resources of Acquaria in the future
Flightplan (2005)
Technically correct, only flaws on plot.
Frankly, I don't agree with all the anger from most cinema critics about this movie. This one have been receiving a lot of bad reviews, but all of them are just too exaggerated. Flightplan, actually, is a movie that is well worth seeing. I do agree with most people that the plot has a lot of holes/mistakes, making it a little flat and with an obvious ending, but taking this out, everything in the movie is well-worked. From the great performances of Jodie Foster, Peter Saarsgard and Sean Bean, to the tense environment created by director Robert Schwentke, who successfully gives us a wide, diverse view of such claustrophobic place as an airplane. Soundtrack and Photography are also very good. Both crew and cast managed well in doing their best even with such confuse storyline and underdeveloped characters. That's a good example of how a good team can save what would certainly be a poor movie.
Fantastic Four (2005)
Average, but entertaining
I have to tell that I was expecting a little bit more from FF, but it's not a bad movie at all. Sure there are some plot and direction matters, mainly in the fist 30 minutes - whit weird cuts and lack of details on the plot, somewhat "rushing" through the story - what makes you think that it's going to be just crap, but the movie improves after the first section (the space mission). The story takes a different pace from when the characters start to deal with their new abilities, the film gains in humor and action, and finally the personality of each character start to match with what we know from the Comic books. Thing, specially, is well explored in the story, taking his frustration with his new look and his ironic relation with Johnny . Obviously, you still will find some "holes" in the remaining scenes, most of them due to the lack of personality in the direction work and/or plot, but nothing to worry about, as the terrible ones you find in the beginning. Visual effects are good enough, they work just fine. Actually, this movie is only about fun and entertainment. It's not a pretentious movie. It's not as sophisticated as other Marvel blockbusters, as X-Men or SpiderMan, it won't make you think about tragedy or prejudice. The goal of this movie is just to entertain. As many FF fans, I would like to see something more sophisticated, but this production is not disappointing. Take you popcorn box and watch it relaxed, like reading the comic book.
