Truth Seekers (2020)
A Proper Entertainment
Whilst the series is not for everyone for its count on jumpscares and horror scenes, Truth Seekers has captured my attention to screen entertainment once again.
The series brings out modern elements combined with not over-the-top supernatural phenomenon which plays an integrated role in our society. There is a sense of familiarity that shows its humility to be able to reach the hearts of many viewers. And honestly, I just haven't had been entertained this long since Sherlock (2010), so I'm going to take this as another new start for the rise of entertainment empire back on screen.
I'm guessing that there is a lot of hidden gem titles that deserves similar rating, it's just that they lack advertisement or having none advertisement at all.
Sherlock (2010)
Equal to a High Quality Ornament
Good plot, clever conversation, great action, nice suspense, nice cinematography, mysteries to be enjoyed, classic fun music, all to be found in Sherlock.
I was enjoying every moment I spent watching Sherlock. But that was it.
I didn't miss Sherlock. I didn't find it memorable. I didn't find myself wanting to re watch it long after I finished it. (Which is why I rated it 8 when I should have rated it 9).
Sherlock is best enjoyed while it is playing. You play it.
I did say those not so nice things, but if I am given the chance to watch Sherlock or not, then bring it on. It's too good than not.
Moana (2016)
Could have been better
I was watching waiting for conversations but all I get is singing. Ninety percent of the movie is singing. I think it will be better with more conversation, so it won't look like a mash up between Barbie the Island Princess with Disney.
Graphic and plot were superb. Surpasses Rise of the Guardians or equal with it. I find myself enjoying the movie. And that tells how good it was.
Sure there were boring moments, such as the part where they were attempting to get Maui's weapon, but that's only my opinion.
Not as good as How to Train your Dragon.
7.9 mostly from graphic and enjoyment.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)
Gray Lush Green
I've never been so glad to be proved wrong this time. I thought this movie would be boring.
First note to take is the visual. A wide range of breath-taking grayness of rain and pickled beauty of lush green garden.
This is how you work fantasy on screen. With peculiarity of reality and a dash of lone journey.
The movie shines for the most part, thanks to the Tim Burton-ness.
The only bug is that some action scenes are a bit too... clunky chunky, and childish. Kinda remind me of early Spy Kids, but without the enthusiasm of the whole kiddie stuff its predecessor has. It's the one off-note from the movie which I don't admire. Though not "all" action scenes are bad, some of them did do justice to get you a grip.
Asa depicts Jake's character development greatly, along with Eva's stunning Miss Peregrine. I see a lot of work puts into acting, and I commend that.
Except for the villain.
The movie had potential to be something better. A masterpiece, if not for: - Some clunky action scenes - Somewhat weird, "for kids" villain (I need to remind producers, "it's okay to create a wretched and powerful villain, instead of a shallowly portrayed one, especially for a movie this peculiar") (Because this is a movie with children as mains, that is not aimed for children, pg-13?)
Things I'm thankful for: - Jake is a well-portrayed character, in all scenes - Miss Peregrine is lovable, and perfect - Some action scenes are cool - Stunning visual
Nevertheless, it definitely has potentials to gain a 9/10 score. And I'll give 8 for the most part (good first half, and some second half). That, and minus 1 for weird childish action villain stuffs, it doesn't belong here.
A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)
Chit Chattery Chipmunks All Singing Along...
Visually, the movie is very beautiful. Gothic yes, and beautiful. 9/10 for that.
I remember watching this when I was a teenager, then I look it up again now and hey, it's really good.
The Baudelaires children are cute, the villains are funny, and the sets is adorable.
The best part was how the children made me feel about them. I sympathized with them, and yet, I am also satisfyingly fulfilled by them.
The story, like all grim comedic movie (another story with a nearly similar theme like this is Into the Woods), is somehow somewhat a mess. But it worked. It worked fine.
I loved it then, and I still love it now.
Sadly, they don't give it a sequel.
This is a kind of movie that will always have a place in my heart and my movie collection.
P.S. The credit also has an eye-candy animation.
Inception (2010)
Dreams, and More Dreams
At first, I wanted to rate this movie a 9.5/10.
Some things that took away the points were:
(1). The feeling the movie gave me
(2). The ending
Things that keep me loving it:
(1). The beautiful special effects
(2). Interesting plot
(3). Lively characters
The ending gave me a headache, literally, which forces me to take everything about the movie as a grain of salt.
But I'm addicted to its ideas and the visuals it offers me. Simply amazing, I love it.
And yet, I was also being made loony for a couple of days. I was hyped and restless, wondering about dreams, and more dreams. What if, and what if. Haha.
Well, it's a Love/Hate at its best for me.
5 cm (2012)
Have a Bit of Taste of What Friendship, Love, and Life is Like in This Finely Scripted Movie, 5 cm
Heartwarming story-telling of young adulthood life Indonesian-style.
Packed with a close-knitted friendship, love, last minute college-life, a sense of adventure, comedy, and tear-jerking drama.
This movie will engage you no matter where you started. Exceptional cast made the movie a must watch for young adults.
Personally, I find not one deficiency in this movie, which reminds me, the lads and ladies still looked like eye-candies even when they were in the midst of adventure. A necessary additional touch to keep the viewers interested.
The soundtracks are as fitting as well as the well-turned scenery. Have got to note that.
Simply beautiful, traditionally as it is, and engaging.
One of Indonesia's finest movie.
Rise of the Guardians (2012)
Jack Frost, and Several Points
At first, I rated this movie a near 10 because I was impressed by how they formulated the story of Jack Frost as a character (and I still am) and the beautiful cinematography they pleased my eyes with.
Yes, it was that good (and it still is).
I extracted 3 points for the following reasons:
a. The ending line. (I was left thinking like, what? The moon?) (-1 point)
b. The Boogeyman. (he is a fine villain for kids, yet his evilness is not solid enough, or should I say, the resolution of his evil trait is not solved beautifully, only good enough to keep the story going) (-1 point)
c. Overall experience. (there are good movies that you would not bore to watch repetitively, but for me, this movie isn't one of those. After watching it twice, three times, fourth, I finally feel like...what? Especially about the previous reasons)
But it wouldn't hurt to watch it once in a while, say, once every several months or once every year.
It will fill us with the wonder of Jack Frost's story in a very pleasing cinematography.
The Hunger Games (2012)
A Strong Young Adult Movie yet Somehow Felt Like A Loose Wrap
I am having a hard time reviewing this title. The elements are not entirely pointless, quite the contrary, it contains a very promising story.
In whole, the layers of the events are tied nicely and continuously strong. Despite that, somehow I still felt an unsure atmosphere while watching this movie. Like, should it be strong and depressive, or strong and playful, or strong and suspenseful? That kind of unsure feeling. Perhaps because it is a PG-13. It's like a strong gift with a loose wrap full of doubt. You're kind of hesitated to open it.
The game itself started brutally, which I applaud. Is this a teen movie? Yes, when you look at it as a whole. But not that part.
I could rate this title 6.8/10 or just straight 8/10. In fact, I am just going to hang in between.
Surga Yang Tak Dirindukan (2015)
A Family "Religious" Affair
While cheating has become a common thing where we ignore our traditional moral value, romance has never been a major part of this film.
The story began nicely as a young selfless emotionally-damaged boy met his future wife, a kind young volunteer girl. Then the story progressed to a more complicated scenario where the third party started to intervene their happily married life.
Acting was quite believable. They made you understand why the characters behaved the way they are. Some conflicts never change. Just imagine you're watching a soap drama, except that you will find that some stories in this movie are at the very least, quite relatable and some emotional drama might feel overrated, too, without losing the sense of what it wants to tell you.
The religious aspect of this movie isn't for everyone. Some Muslims might find this enchanting, but some Muslims might also find this as being too exaggerated.
Nevertheless, this is an okay family movie. Whether you're parents, children, teenagers, young adults, adults, or elderly people, this movie is for everyone.
Whether you're a Muslim or not, this movie still has that common message to help you understand things that we mostly overlooked in our daily lives.
Bring your children, bring your spouse(s), bring your family. And most importantly, bring tissues.
This is a "Heaven that You Never Longed for".
Into the Woods (2014)
Musical in Its Own Style
***This Review May Contain Spoilers***
Looking at the trailers, I already predicted how the story will end. I was right about that, so I was preparing myself to be disappointed. This is one of those boring movies about fantasy and magic.
But hey, was I wrong.
Story-wise, even though I love how dynamic the story has progressed, they still jumped from one scene to another scene (heartbreakingly) with a rush.
I lamented the sound effects where the witch just came from nowhere attempting to be frightening, they shouldn't make it so sudden. They failed at making her looked frightening. Instead, she was just annoying, almost boring. It's too shocking and not funny nor engaging. That was such a bad move. I almost cried.
Character-wise, I was genuinely amused by the portrayal of some characters. I love Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) in this movie.
Anyone who loves musical will find that this movie has lots of catchy songs. There's a lot of my favourites, including "On the Steps of The Palace", "Giant in the Sky", and ultimately, the most iconic song of this movie, is "Agony" sung by Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen a.k.a. The Princes.
I think "Into the Woods" is a grim comedic movie. A musical in its own style. With an extraordinary moral lesson. If only you could bear to watch it until the very last end.
(I hate that Rapunzel's story become pointless, I prefer to see her to have her own twisted sad tale, too. That would make the whole movie "meat". I basically believe that was the reason of why this movie has become overlooked by most. They're inconsistent in the moral story-line. I would gladly give this movie a ten out of ten if only they gave Rapunzel her own twisted sad tale, too.)
Wicked, cunning, original. Heartwarming. I cried and I laughed along with this movie. I've watched it several times now. It is on my memorable movie list.
If you could see what I mean, then you deserve a good watch.
