The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)
Dare I say better than the book?!
I was pleasantly surprised with The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, in that it was a perfectly paced film, which balanced particularly dark action and thought-provoking themes very well. In addition, it set up the first The Hunger Games perfectly, something I felt the book was a little unclear on. I was worried that Lucy Gray's constant singing, as is in the book, would take over the film, but it was perfectly placed and necessary. All in all, a really entertaining watch for Hunger Games fans with some fantastic foreshadowing scenes and quotes that were far from cheesy. This felt like Suzanne Collins wrote the script, unlike in the Mockingjay Part 1 & 2 - a film definitely worth your time.
Senior Year (2022)
Waste of a good premise
This film has a really interesting idea at its core with loads of potential. The film falls flat however and ruins what could have been something really interesting/funny. I'm not sure who this film is aimed at, but the comedy just isn't there unfortunately.
Dune (2021)
Finally Hollywood isn't rushing things.
This is the best film I've seen for ages. The pace was perfect, the character development was amazing, the cinematography was perhaps the best I've ever seen, and Hans Zimmer's score was up there with the best I've ever heard. The story was as grandiose as it could be, yet really personal and concentrated. It has given me hope in the Hollywood I have started to distrust. A must watch for anyone that cares about cinema.
American Horror Story: Winter Kills (2021)
Rushed but still good
I feel this series could have been full length. The story had the potential for real depth, and I felt it was perfectly paced until the last episode! Nevertheless, I enjoyed the half season much more than I thought I would, and the last episode was still enjoyable (despite the reviews).
Clarkson's Farm (2021)
I wanted to dislike it
Clarkson's Farm was a breath of fresh air! It was the same, hilarious Jeremy in a completely new setting. Entirely unscripted (something I dislike TGT for), and actually a very educational and interesting watch. I truly never thought this would work, but Jeremy was fantastic. A fab binge watch if there ever were one.
Selling Sunset: If Looks Could Sell (2019)
This is trash
Everyone seems to be so full of themselves, really difficult to watch, especially this episode with the 'interested buyer'.
The Final Table (2018)
Far too American
I despise how large scale everything is. Everything seems to have its own theme tune, takes away from the actual cooking. Plus why are they using random celebs to judge food? (Also, the American presenter was very hypocritical to criticise British cuisine)
Tenet (2020)
WATCH IT TWICE, ABSOLUTE PERFECTION
My first watching convinced me this was the best film I'd seen for some years, the second watching confirmed it was the best I'd ever seen. It seems people rating this low are not willing to try and understand this complex yet perfect/intricate storyline. Every sentence of dialogue carries meaning later on, every scene as clever as the next; if you really concentrate, this film enters another league. Once you understand this film, you understand it's greatness - this is truly cinematography and story telling and its best.
Unorthodox (2020)
Painful and beautiful
The ensemble is just fantastic, the emotions are real and raw. Learnt so much about Judaism and myself through this show, an absolute must watch (the leading two ladies are unbelievable)!
After Life (2019)
Crippling and beautiful ending
Such a simple and beautiful story that fills you up with all kinds of emotions. Everyone needs to see this - it's a rite of passage.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Abrams played it safe so not much to dislike
I think Abrams did a sterling job of picking up the pieces of Episode 8, closing it off in an acceptable (and slightly predictable) way. If he'd made the script "too out there" like the previous episode, people would have gone nuts, so I understand how some people may see this finale as quite bland and straightforward. Nevertheless, it brought in new ideas I didn't think I'd see, and a few great twists along the way. Well done Abrams
13 Reasons Why: In High School, Even on a Good Day, It's Hard to Tell Who's on Your Side (2019)
Tyler Down wow!
Tyler stole the show, amazing and disturbing performance. Really felt that scene, well done.
The Shape of Water (2017)
Fantastic love story
Love every aspect of this film; the music, the cinematography, the acting, the setting, all perfect. The only let down is the Russian accents. As someone who has studied Russian for a decade, they sound like actors who don't know the language which is a shame.
Dark (2017)
Truly incredible
Absolutely blown away by this show. I love shows about time, especially when it's done well. Can't believe so few have seen it, cannot fault it. And watch it in German with subtitles!
Midsommar (2019)
A true horror film with incredible cinematography
I like horror films that don't rely on jump scares to scare you. This is a truly original horror with some of the most beautiful scenes I've ever seen. The main actress is also phenomenal.
Chernobyl (2019)
Perfection
Truly the best tv series I have ever seen, every episode as perfect as the last.
Toy Story 4 (2019)
Pixar never fails!
This fourth Toy story hit me with all the feels. It's story was exciting, funny and emotional as ever, and was a brilliant addition to the trilogy. The ending too was extremely poignant, a real tear jerker!
Chambers (2019)
Amazing
Yes, it was slow, but I was so involved in the Chambers universe so quickly. Uma Thurman was amazing (of course), Sasha too. Really like how con-fuddled the story became, how you really couldn't guess what was next.
Behind the Curve (2018)
Hilarious yet worrying
This is a truly baffling documentary and I can not believe people have invested their life into this theory. That said, it was very inciteful and was hilarious to see them prove themselves wrong.
Escape Room (2019)
Surprisingly good!
Saw meets brain teaser! The film was tense throughout, the characters were well acted and the story was actually very original. The fact the entire film was based on puzzles and word play made it fun throughout. A sequel wouldn't go amiss!
Hereditary (2018)
Shocked at how good it was!
A completely original horror, full of scares and tension. This film creates scares more than jump-scares. Terrifying themes and some scenes I wish I could forget they were that intense!
