Outer Banks (2020)
Entertaining but with many flaws...
This series has many positives but unfortunately also quite a few negatives...
After the first 5 minutes I did not think that I would end up liking the main characters but actually the cast is great and chemistry between them also seems genuine. The premise has a lot of potential but it is how it is told where my main criticism lies. There are just too many plot holes and unrealistic choices made by the protagonists. The series does not miss much to be considered great instead of just ok.
Maybe they will be able to work on the flaws in the next season. I am interested to see how the story for them continues, which is a good sign after all.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Not what I was hoping for...
So, I like the characters as well as the actors playing them and the action scenes were very well done and for a change not as CGI-heavy as in other comic movies. However, it seems to me the movie doesn't really know what it wants to be, I think the music choice was not ideal and the dialogues were not as funny as they thought they were.
I do hope we see the actors in these roles again, just with a smarter screenplay or maybe in an even larger ensemble movie.
Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein (2019)
David Harbour is just fun to watch!
I have no background information about this mockumentary, but it kinda seems like a passionate project. I must applaude Netflix for still supporting such daring pieces, which they know won't be a crowd pleaser.
I actually found the bad acting refreshingly acted well.
The whole thing is very intetesting and entertaining.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Interesting but so many missed opportunities
I liked the casting of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel from the start and after seeing the movie I still think she was a good choice. As with so often with those superheros movies, it yet again seems here that another actor with potential was held back.
What I also welcomed was the plot twist in the last third. I think it was not a bad decision to take a different approach on this than in the comics.
SLJ delivered on his young portrayal as Nick Fury, but I think we were robbed of Clark Gregg's screen time.
Some reviewers praised the chemistry between Brie Larson and SLJ. While I wanted to feel it, I somehow did not. To me it even felt a bit forced.
Goose is the unarguable star of the movie. Although the lack of confusion that he is constantly around, particularly by Nick Furry, put me a bit off.
All in all 2 entertaining hours, not as refreshing as Thor Ragnarok or Black Panther, and definitely not in the same league as Wonder Woman but it is still far better than some of the other generic MCU movies.
