Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
Best of the recent movies!
I love all things Godzilla, but after watching the trailers for this one I was not so sure. Mini Kong was a big red flag for me. However that part of the story was well done.
A big positive was the somewhat limited parts the humans played. Yes, there were some cringe moments, like how a dentist knows how to pilot a high tech craft. The acting was pretty good, and the attempts at comedy were tolerable.
Disappointed that the story was 70% Kong and less Godzilla, although the Kong story was pretty good. But, could they not come up with a better name for the villain, Scar King? Really?
I was hoping Godzilla's enemy would be Destroyah, that would have been epic.
The end battle was okay, but not great.
Several people in the theater were clapping, so I am not alone in liking this one.
I will definitely buy the blu-ray!
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
Disappointing story, great ending
The start of Frozen Empire was interesting, but the story quickly went downhill. It was like they were re-developing the main characters after we had already learned all about them in Afterlife.
Ray had the best lines in the movie, subtle humor at the right times. The voice audio seemed hard to hear, but maybe it was the theater's poor sound system.
Kind of tired of the mini Stay Puft guys, they really do not add much to the story.
Phoebe character had too much screen time, her character was actually boring(until the end).
Oh, the addition of Slimer was pretty cool, they should have had him slime Dr. Venkman, would have been awesome!
The last 30 minutes was the best part, the evil horned guy was just strong enough to be menacing. Having Ray and the team save the day was great!
Sad to say, not as good as Afterlife, and probably would not buy the blu ray for Frozen Empire.
Gojira -1.0 (2023)
Disappointed again
Maybe with all the hype, excellent trailer, and the great reviews I was expecting too much from Godzilla Minus 1.
In the end, it was a similar formula to the recent Godzilla movies.
Great monster action scenes, mediocre to poor human storylines.
Godzilla was treacherous, devastating, overwhelming and just downright badass in this movie.
Unfortunately he was only onscreen for a small amount of the movie, maybe 25 to 30 percent at best.
The lead human character was a weak, insecure, crying (and crying some more) coward. Somehow are we supposed to feel sorry for him?
I liked Aikiko better, she cried less!
Minus One will not be in my top 10 all time Godzilla movies.
Oh, well, I keep hoping for another gem in this series...maybe someday.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Best movie from Hollywood in years
Murphy was awesome, rest of cast was great too. Some of the diologue was disappointing, too much hesitation at times, but overall good writing. I really don't like flashback scenes in movies and this one had several. Just add the scenes to the normal timeline...CONTINUITY people!!!! The story itself was so interesting, so many things I did not know about the "gadget" project and the scientists. I had no idea Oppenheimer was once a communist sympathizer! The other negative was the extended, corrupt interogation scene at the end. 10 minutes would have been enough of that. The story makes you think how perilous our situation is now, with so many nukes available for use at any time.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Fun movie, interesting story
I just saw the movie on streaming. Now I wish I would have seen it in theaters. At that time, it was getting bad reviews online, so I did not go.
Anyway, it was a pretty good movie, some action, interesting story with Ellie and Grant doing some 007 like detective work.
The storyline with Owen and Blue was a little overdone, but it did not detract too much from enjoying the movie.
I really don't understand the bad reviews, it is a sci-fi dinosaur movie!!! Don't expect these types of movie to always make sense and follow real world science.
Dominion is a fun and entertaining movie and I plan to watch it again!
Blade Runner (1982)
Boring Blade Runner
I have never made it through the entire movie. It has a promising start, but the ever present focus on who is a replicant and the ensuing psycho babble are mind numbing.
It's always hard to stay awake during this one, perhaps I'll try to watch it earlier in the day, but I just don't think it will matter.
It has such a promising storyline too, but the story just drags on and on and on.
Perhaps if the characters had personality, or interesting lines, or something, anything, to keep my interest.
I don't get the love for this snooze fest, sorry to say.
I love sci-fi, but this one does not make my cut.
Elvis (2022)
Good acting, terrible direction
The actors were good, but the direction was ridiculous. We were expecting a life story focused on Elvis, from start till his death. But it seemed to be more about the corrupt Colonel Parker. Several times the movie jumped around to various side stories, just a total mess. 5 stars is generous rating.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Better than I expected
From the previews, this looked like a really dumb storyline, but being a long time Spiderman fan, I went to see it anyway.
I don't like DR. Strange, so that was a big negative for me.
The storyline/friendship of Ned, MJ and Peter was well done. So was the inclusion of the other 2 Peter Parker's.
There was way too much goofy dialogue, trying to be funny scenes. These scenes seemed forced, not adding to the flow of the movie.
Acting was pretty good, action scenes were just okay, too fast and blurry to really see what was happening, especially when May was killed.
Hopefully the Spiderman series will return to its roots and avoid the stupid multi-verse.
The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989)
Surprisingly Good!
It's a slow developing story, but overall pretty enjoyable. Adding Daredevil to the mix was great, and unexpected. The bad guys were mostly wimps and not much of a fight from them. So the action was lacking quite a bit.
It's worth a look for Hulk fans, unless you are a CGI junkie, then you won't like it.
Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
Battles good, humans not so good
The plot was pretty typical of most monster movies, very non-sensical and no real explanation of what, why things are. The whole "hollow earth" portion could have been left out and I would not have missed it.
The mad scientist role had a lot of potential, but the character was never developed.
The storyline with the kids playing detective would have been much better if her dad would have been the adult instead of some random conspiracy theorist.
Monster battles were the best ever, of the recent triad of Godzilla movies.
If you expect the humans in monster movies to make logical decisions, then you are going to the wrong type of movies. Just sit back and enjoy the chaos, lol.
The Marksman (2021)
I enjoyed it!
I was reluctant to see this movie, since I'm not really a fan a Neeson. I thought it was a pretty good story, though basic. Dialog was kind of thin, but okay.
Predictable, yes of course, but many movies are. How many do you walk away from thinking, " I didn't expect that"?
The middle of movie could have used another shootout scene, it did drag on for a short while.
Despite the shortcomings, I walked away happy. It was better than most movies I've seen over the last 2 years.
A Christmas Carol (2019)
A dark version of a classic
If you are a purist, then, as many reviews here attest, you will not like this movie.
However, I often enjoy seeing different takes on classic stories.
This version is very gritty and dark. Scrooge displays more contempt and hatred for everyone and only cares about money. I think this enhances the point of the story, that money is evil and corrupts men's hearts.
The ghosts in this movie are awesome! The best part of the movie.
I was disappointed in the ending scene, it could have been more drawn out and developed. I will plan on adding this to my watchlist every Christmas.
Aquaman (2018)
Okay movie, but missed the mark
Why is it so hard to make a good superhero movie?
The positives in Aquaman are few...The action scenes are good, fight scenes were done well. I liked the start of the story with Atlanna and the lighthouse keeper. CGI was also really good.
Acting was okay, I felt sorry for these guys having to recite some of the silly lines.
The story just got off track, and there were too many dumb moments.
If I was 12 years old, I would probably have loved this movie.
Oh, the soundtrack was pretty bad too.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Very disappointing
Good action scenes, but that's about all this has to offer.
Oh, and the dialogue between Stark and Strange was at least interesting.
I thought Thanos would be a real badass, but then he has a crying scene! Give me a break! Also, Banner could not transform into Hulk!
Acting was just okay, Downey and Cumberbatch were best, by far.
Story was predictable and pretty boring, ending was confusing.
Another movie that fails to live up to the hype.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Terrible script, poor acting, not living up to Star Trek standards
It was boring and predictable, and the characters did not fit the typical Star Trek crew.
Since when are officers allowed to openly question every captain's decision? Another officer is so pessimistic, and constantly so, it is just irritating.
Was so hopeful of another deep, well-storied series, but I guess that is too much to ask for.
At least the special effects for decent.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Same storyline as episode 4
Thankfully Harrison Ford had a significant role in this movie, he did his best to keep it interesting. Not too many positives, otherwise. The villain was a weak, immature kid...not someone to be frightened of.
How does the young hero know everything about the Falcon and how to use Jedi powers without any training? No real explanation of what drove Kylo Ren to the dark side. No story background on the Supreme Leader.
The above are just a few examples of the very weak storyline. Too many plot holes to list!!!
I do think the actress playing Rey has potential - just need to develop her character. One of the most dynamic, interesting characters, Poe, had very little screen time.
The movie jumped from one action scene to another, with poor dialogue in-between. The entire story was very predictable, no "wow" factor at all.
