Pahanhautoja (2022)
Body Horror with surprising depth
Hatching was an effective horror/family drama. Also touching on the obsession we can have with social media, it solidly merged these three themes into an insightfully scary movie.
All the Old Knives (2022)
Old Fashion Spy Thriller
Didn't know what to expect from this one, but was pleasantly surprised. Definitely a slow burn thriller but a worthwhile one. If your a fan of films like Tinker, Taylor Soldier, Spy then this film is for you. Always had me guessing right to the end.
The Northman (2022)
Absolute Masterpiece
The Northman is an adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Set in a Viking wilderness of blood gore, this film could have easily been a typical Viking revenge tale but Eggers puts his unique stamp on the movie elevating it to greater heights.
Ambulance (2022)
Went in unsure, came out happily surprised!
To all who have seen a Michael Bay film and have reservations among his later work. I can assure you he's back at his 90's maniacal best in Ambulance.
Simple plot about a bank heist gone awry and a very long but entertaining cat and mouse ambulance chase.
One liners aplenty and never really stops to take a breath. It knows what it is and doesn't compromise. This is cinema made purely for thrills and deliver it does, making for a wild and fun 2+ hours.
Copshop (2021)
Cult classic maybe?
Copshop is a old school crime thriller based mostly in one location. It's filled with lots of references to older films from the 70's. It's nothing new but well made and has all the tropes of possibly becoming a midnight cult movie. I'll probably end up liking it more with each new viewing.
The Many Saints of Newark (2021)
Better than what the reviews were saying
I went in with low expectations but came out pleasantly surprised. TMSON is a nice companion piece not equaling the television series but still a very entertaining ride. There are a lot of characters and the narrative structure isn't always clear but the acting and character development is fascinating especially for viewers of the show.
Saint Maud (2019)
A rare unforgettable character study
An unforgettable weighty psychological horror that touches on loneliness, mental health and religion. It's deep, slow burning and extremely insightful without being preachy.
If you are looking for a psychologically complex horror film this is for you.
Beckett (2021)
Nothing new but it's on Netflix!
I've seen this kind of movie before The Fugitive, Red Corner, Fled, Midnight Run almost reminds me of something that would have been released in the 90's.
If your looking for a detailed script with richly developed characters well...sorry...this isn't the film for you. On a pure entertainment level I found it enjoyable and if that's what your looking for then it's on Netflix, give it a go!
Not bad, not great.
Cruella (2021)
Enjoyable spin-off on its own!
I will say this film could have easily been just as enjoyable if it weren't a spin off. The fact that executives think we need a franchise to sell a movie these days is sad in itself.
But I enjoyed Cruella, it was fast paced, energetic, full of inspiration and has a great leading performance from Emma Stone. Recommended for anyone up for a fun time without a slow moment..oh and a great soundtrack!
Don't Breathe 2 (2021)
Very disappointing sequel!
As good as the first film was, this sequel's tension doesn't live up to the standard set by the first. Too many moments were over the top, draining whatever believability it could've had.
The Night House (2020)
An ominous mystery/thriller, well worth your time
Do you really know the ones closest to you? An eerie question that's an underlying theme for The Night House. A slow burn but very engaging mystery, thriller. Well shot, acted and directed. It had me hooked all the way through.
Old (2021)
If only...
"Old" boasts an interesting premise and had the potential to be a really engaging film. Unfortunately weak dialogue, confusing camera angles and lack of character depth or explanation make this film sink without really ever submerging.
Togo (2019)
Togo is an endearing and well told story!
Bolstering great visuals and cinematography. Togo not only is a great technical achievement but a great story too. A film that soars! Highly recommended for everyone.
Outside the Wire (2021)
Forgettable, but passes the time
Run of the mill B-movie actioner, lots of gunfire, thin plot and will probably forget the movie within the next month. But having said that it did what it set out to do..brainlessly amuse for 2 hours...
Things Heard & Seen (2021)
Just keeps burying itself
A film that doesn't know if it's a horror/supernatural thriller or a straight out drama. Many of characters are either not realised enough or are thrown away.
Wrath of Man (2021)
If I could give it a 7 3/4 I would!
Although the tone isn't quiet cohesive initially and the script is no where near as solid as "The Gentlemen" Wrath of Man packs one massive punch, with a thoroughly enjoyable second act!
Nobody (2021)
Don't believe the hype!
It had all the ingredients of being an entertaining action film. Good acting, a familiar but decent premise and was directed with flair and inspiration.
Unfortunately it turned into a run of the mill action movie, with many cliched ideas. Similar to John Wick but not as fresh.
Voyagers (2021)
Good premise, but very messy
Lord of the Flies in space could be a good way of describing this film. Although it never quiet understands what it's trying to achieve due to a very messy and uninspiring script.
Run (2020)
Top Notch Thriller!
Although similar ground has been covered before, Run proves that traditional thrills can still excite! The acting, script and tone all come together to create a very taught and entertaining thrill ride!
The Mauritanian (2021)
One of the years best so far!
A well told, well acted political drama. With really gripping last act, a must see!
Crisis (2021)
Heads in the right direction
A good story with good acting holds a fairly shaky script together. A decent thriller although far from the best of its genre.
Best Laid Plans (1999)
Good ideas, poor execution
I wanted to like this film the ideas were there, the acting was there too. It comes down to a poor script and too many plot holes...if only it's execution was better it could have been really enjoyable...
The Empty Man (2020)
Vastly Underrated
This film was epic, tense and so entertaining. Do not pay attention to the low score rating. If you are into Mystery/Horror this is a must see.
