Zombieland Saga (2018)
I will not lie, I love this show
I accidentally ran across this title one night while randomly scrolling through things on Crunchyroll. It said "Zombie" so I said, "What the hell."
What followed was a marathon session fueled by Red Bull that saw me make my way through the first and second seasons of this wonderful little show. This was followed by regularly watching the show over, in both dub and sub.
**Minor spoilers might follow... I don't think I am giving anything away, but fair warning.**
I suffer from severe depression, and this series was one of the few things that managed to break through the funk.
I'm insanely happy with it, except for 2 episodes which I feel break the whole narrative flow too much. Episodes 8 and 9 of Zombie Land Saga Revenge, just mysteriously dives into the past. Well, for that matter, episode 10 deals with the past, too. Now, I hold no ill will towards the Yugiri-centric 8th and 9th episode, I just feel like a single episode would have managed the story well enough, and got us back to what we are all watching for... Zombie Idols singing their hearts out.
The one thing consistent between the subs and dubs is the music. They made no attempts to translate the songs into English, and it's perfect the way it is.
Well, I shouldn't say no effort. Mysteriously in Episode 11 of Zombie Land Saga Revenge, they attempt to translate parts of a song, I believe it was Mezame Returner, but I could be mistaken, I mean it has been a day since my last watch through, and it was time for the subtitles that time.
All in all, I believe that if you like J-Pop, and are aren't put off by zombies played up for laughs, this is a great series.
There are some genuine laugh out loud moments, including a callback visual gag in I believe the 11th episode. It also has some really heartfelt moments, Episode 8 of the original season comes to mind. It's Lily-centric, and it really drives home what these girls are giving up to do what they are doing.
Themes of friendship and loss permeate the entire series, making the zombie gals seem more human than the primary human character.
Give it a try, and watch at least the first three episodes. The first one episode really just introduces the idea behind the show (And gives the girls their one hard rock show). The second episode breaks randomly into a rap battle, that is sublime in its execution. It isn't until the third episode that things begin to come together, and the great idols Franchouchou are born.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Did they even attempt to read the books?
This is no adaptation of the books... it is an adaptation of a book report, written by a bad student, who read only the cliff notes. Names and places are there Occasionally even events are almost there... but as a whole this is a slap in the face of Robert Jordan's memory.
Rafe Judkins has done a huge disservice to the series.
Factory of Paranormal (2017)
Why?
This movie is literally just 30 minutes of NOTHING, followed by random heavy breathing interspersed with the same nothing footage from the first 30 minutes! Don't watch this... I have seen leg shaving scenes that are more intense than this...
Serenity (2005)
One of the best movies of the year
I saw this movie opening day, at the very first showing, and I have to say, that this one is in a very close race to be my favorite movie of the year, although Batman is going to fight that tooth and nail.
From beginning to end of this superb movie, I couldn't help but watch as Mal and the crew did what they do best, namely get in trouble. The acting was consistent with what I had come to expect from Joss Whedon. Making sure there are just enough laughs to satisfy the comedian in everyone, and just the right blend of seriousness.
I would recommend, that anyone who goes out to see this move first see the series. Otherwise, many of the characters you just won't care about. Clearly this movie was made by Joss, for the fans of the series, because it doesn't really get into the histories of the characters, into their varying relationships. In the end, it is a continuation of an excellent series, and is one of the few movies that has ever left me hungering for a sequel.
I give this movie 10 stars, only because the option does not exist to give it 11 stars.
Watch this movie!
