Something Borrowed (2011)
Bonehead paradise wherever this was set
People totally empty behind character stereotypes making dumb decisions and reacting dumbly to other airheads doing stupid things. Jim halpert is there and really does his schtick with the befuddled replies , little facial expressions like he cant believe whatever's going on. He gets clocked in the face with a badminton racket. Theres a guy named Markus or Marcus. He's so stupid. Also Kate hudson says really stupid things. And everyone else. "Youre cheating on me and im super pissed about it. Also im cheating on you and am pregnant but thats different." "Will what i'm about to do cause problems for me or anyone else? Wait Dont care !" These are all bad, undeveloped people doing thinly written and impulsive things. Infidelity occurs at all angles, they all lie to each other and are self important, whiny. Guys an idiot, girls an idiot, everyone else an idiot. At least they know they're going to hell.
A Deadly Silence (1989)
Seriously What was with That dudes hair
Made for tv thriller connoisseurs wont find a whole lot in this mid film - highlights include and are limited to seeing David Schwimmer who is obviously not 19 say "i'm 19" , and for marvelling at that other dudes hair. I know it was 1989 but i'm not sure that really explains the cut / style on this guys head. He appeared in court with this hair, completely seriously. No one laughs at him in the movie. I don't think i was supposed to be thinking about that dudes hair so much, but the rest of the film was totally overshadowed, not like it really takes much to forget the writing and acting. But i will never forget seeing david schwimmer attempt at drama and seriously say "i'm 19" or that other dudes hair, so i guess it has more going for it than some other tv thrillers of the era. Maybe this movie is ten stars for emotional impact, not because of the subject covered, but for that dudes hair and david schwimmer saying "I'm 19"
Sunset Cove (1978)
Geez
There's Trash and then there's trash. The slew of immobilizing chemicals in my brain at the time of viewing only served to bring the experience closer to masochistic torture as opposed to a lens into a fun beach romp. I've spent countless hours with 70's trash and this is one of few films that I've had to entertain as opposed to it entertaining me. Incredibly flimsy and out of touch writing, characters, plot, motivations at a Gruelling pace. I felt something near hatred for each character and for Sunset Cove as an entity. This movie came on autoplay some time after my initial viewing and I legitimately shouted "No!" and jumped up from my seat to shut it off. I had a nightmare one time wherein a goblin-type creature forced me through a black curtain in space and I would up in the opening scene of this movie, up in the sky SUNSET COVE mirrored in bright blue, that dreaded peppy music playing. I screamed NOOOOOO at the top of my lungs and tried to drown myself but found I had gills and was stuck inside of Sunset Cove forever. The 2 stars goes toward the beautiful HD restoration of this initially lost film (too bad they found it), and for the sheer audacity of director Al Adamson to put something like this out in the world.
Gangsta Rap: The Glockumentary (2007)
Near literally Spinal Tap
Okk went in expecting something mindless, wasn't expecting it to be essentially / mindlessly spinal tap - not just in premise; recycled jokes / near identical structure/plot points.. repeatedly I found myself watching scenes lifted exactly from the movie except with ever so slight variation because of the style of music/culture covered - srsly watch Spinal Tap and then This Movie back to back. I don't necessarily dismiss Gansta Rap based on this, I just don't fully understand the thought process of the writer / director. Why spend so much time working on a film that is obviously never going to outshine the original film that all this material is lifted from? Is it a love letter? Did he think people wouldn't notice? And furthermore, You've got the opportunity to make your own film, why not just spend a little more time making it Your Own?
BUT: I could see the appeal in doing somewhat of a "remake" of spinal tap, putting the artists in the same situations but having them react in their own ways (though sometimes the response is the same and only the wording has changed...), even though in my opinion it doesn't work 95% of the time.
I don't know. More than view this movie I tried to wrap my head around the thought process behind. Did the director make sure all of his actors had seen Spinal Tap first or did he pass the identical script outline as his own? Did he own it or lose sleep over being found out? I'll never know because as soon as I'm done writing this I'll probably never think about it again and I'm sure not gonna ask.
Recommend for fans of Spinal Tap who also like to watch Bad movies on purpose. Not a wholly Terrible film, not really anything special, but it exists in the same universe as You, Me, and Spinal Tap, so take that as you will.
Waitress! (1982)
Perfect mess
One of those rare movies pouncing on dated aspects of what made other movies of the era stand the test of time, making it wholly surreal to witness and consider the filmmakers thought processes, its episodic format and gives the impression of layers being peeled as the film takes the viewer to its center, vs a beginning to an end. Jokes land not for their intended purpose but for what they have become over time. Truly a rare time capsule into thin and misguided filmmaking that itself takes on new life as irony becomes more ever present in this modern age. Highly recommend to anyone who can understand what I mean in this review. 10/10, one of my all time favourite movies.
