New Amsterdam (2008)

Loved New Amsterdam
7 June 2012
New Amsterdam is an example of smart, imaginative, creative shows that get no respect in Hollywood. I watched every episode and couldn't wait to see the next one.Nothing canned. Nothing stupid or predictable. You could believe this man was immortal, living multiple lifetimes and careers in his one life. It was well acted, well written, properly paced. New Amsterdam was well produced, from the title sequence, through the flashbacks, and the character development in each episode. Even the music scoring showed care in adding the most to the overall program. I was sorry the powers that be could see fit to continue the story to some conclusion. Much as what was allowed with "Angel".

New "Day the Earth Stood Still" not bad but no cigar.
13 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The 1951 Day the Earth Stood Still ran on the AMC channel so I viewed that version before watching the new one. The original was always a favorite of mine. The acting is unpretentious. There are bits of unintended humor such as when the doctors marvel at Klaatu's healing, then all lite up cigarettes. The highest level of the 1951 show is its ethical mission. The Earth needs to curb it warlike passions or it's people will be curbed. This 2008 version updates all of the characters and situations, and doesn't do a bad job. But the direction isn't anti-nuclear war and ending with a stirring speech before a worldwide audience to make war no more. Rather, its an environmental movie: We better save the world, or they'll save it from us. Only, no one outside of a few people ever hear his message. So, its wasted.

I did enjoy his conversation in Chinese with a fellow alien on the fate of the Earth. I wish more of the movie had been like that.

It strikes me in both versions while the aim is to speak with all of Earth's leaders in one place, like the UN, neither lands outside the UN. And, neither understands how difficult it is to bring dumb earth nations together. Why they didn't takeover the radio and television airwaves and tell everybody all at once is beyond me.

On the bright side, the way Keanu Reeves' guys were going to exterminate the world was creative and fun to watch.

Outstanding
23 January 2008
Hitler: The Rise of Evil is absolutely outstanding! It is utterly true from an historical standpoint and vividly captures important nuances of Hitler's rise to power. The Hitler character is represented so true to life you swear you are looking at the real thing. His power to mesmerize, his utterly banal and cruel anti-Semitism. None of the negative comments have any merit. It is brilliantly acted and should be available on DVD in the states and available for educational purposes. It was difficult for me to find. While I had recorded off air, it still has the commercials. I had to look it up over the internet and buy a copy from Singapore. Not only is it ridiculous that its not easily available in America, I don't understand why it has never been rebroadcast. The academic companion is of no use if you can't buy the product.
