Moonbase 8 (2020)
9/10
Not the generic slap-stick comedy, and that's why it's great.
9 November 2020
This is a different breed of comedy. It's not on the nose, or in your face. It's not built around a punch line or punched up with canned laughter. It's the kind of comedy you get, when three very close friends get together in a room and let it flow. It's natural, not forced. It's a slow burn, heartfelt and most importantly - real. Everything about these three guys, Fred, Tim and John, seems real and genuine. Each with their own unique style and delivery.

I will only say this: don't go into this expecting a typical Netflix slapjob. Instead, go into it with an open mind, and not demanding a joke to be followed with a punch line straight away, and I promise, you'll enjoy yourself a lot.

The Irishman (2019)

Al Pacino the Great
27 November 2019
What's special about 'The Irishman'? With its three and a half long playtime, this is certainly not just another Netflix flick. No, instead 'The Irishman' demands your attention from the second it starts till the second it ends. You'll find no hand holding or plot exposition here (other than the trademarked Scorsese VO of course), this is pure, unadulterated storytelling from the best in the business.

Thanks to the latest and greatest de-aging tech, we follow Robert De Niro as Frank Sheeran as he begins his career for the Bufalino family. There he meets Russel Bufalino, played by Joe Pesci and things start to unravel.

While De Niro and Pesci never miss a beat, Al Pacino somehow manages to steal every scene he is in. This is Pacino at his best, most boisterous - the Pacino of old, and that's a good thing.

If you don't have Netflix, get it. The Irishman is grade A cinema. It is what it is.

Don't believe the trolls
3 July 2019
The Loudest Voice is fine television, so much so, that it feels like something belonging on HBO. But because of its political messages and subjects it is bound to be victim of trolls and people of different political beliefs whos views cloud what really is.

Don't believe the negative press from insecure basement dwellers online - The Loudest Voice is an interesting look into the world of Fox News and great television all around.

Mandy (I) (2018)

Done to death - why?
16 June 2019
I have a hard time figuring out why this movie was made. Was it an excuse to show Panos Cosmatos's favourite collection of 1980's fonts? Was it to play with wacky filters and strobe lights on set? Was it to revive an already outdated revenge-flick in the hopes of scratching an itch of art-house snobs?

If so, Mandy should be considered as a success - a great success even. If not, Mandy seems to use its filters and visuals as a way to mask an unfulfilling, unoriginal and drawn out plot that delivers as much in substance as rain in Sahara.

It's use of neon visuals and mellow synth orchestra has been done to death, and Panos Cosmato is no closer to making it relevant again. Not good

Chernobyl (2019)

Perfect.
13 June 2019
Nothing is ever perfect, and rarely does any TV show come close - but Chernobyl is one such show. Superb in writing, pacing, acting, cinematography, visually and in sound, Chernobyl is a grade-A example of what is possible on the small screen - Chernobyl is, perhaps, the peak of modern television. Gripping from beginning to end, not a second is wasted in this masterfully crafted mini-series.

It's message clear and haunting, this is a must watch for all the right reasons. Fantastic!

Pretentious, bland and unfulfilling
18 April 2019
There is no one on this planet who loves Beyoncé more than Beyoncé - the fact that she put her own name in the title should say it all. This film is as pretentious and bland as they come, and the only reason it is rated higher than 2 is thanks to the army of Beyoncé fans who would smack ten stars on a CD with sounds of dogs puking as long as it has her name on it.

I won't waste any more time describing why it is bad, because Beyoncé clearly hasn't spent any time making it good.

Baskets (2016–2019)

Subtle humor, solid writing and great pacing.
25 January 2016
Personally, this show seems to showcase a more bold Zach, one that isn't defined by his looks, beard or lady sunglasses. Baskets is about a bitter and sad guy, who in his constant pursuit of being a clown, is a huge failure, which strangely enough makes him seem like a huge clown. The first episode had refreshing subtle humor, that when settled makes for an even greater joke. It reminded me of the similar subtle and low-key humor of Greg Turkingtons and Tim Heideckers "On Cinema" and I found myself really enjoying every minute of this show, and hoping that the ratings will be high enough for it to spawn several seasons. Some jokes didn't hit as well as others, while others still make me chuckle days after having watched it. Louie Anderson as Mrs. Baskets was great, and was the cherry on a near perfect milkshake. Can't wait for the next episodes.
