Battleship (2012)
What a slap in the face
I expected a very shallow movie. I expected something pretty dumb, but fun and full of action, a bit like Independence Day, which is a good match story-wise. What I got was clearly one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Plot holes are as big as earth itself. I was always sure that at some point people would start to ask "What do these aliens actually want from us?" and start to TALK to them. There are many hidden hints that this would happen and this would make sense, since you constantly see that alien technology only classifies weapons as being "red" and dangerous (why do aliens use our red-green classification?). But no. If these stupid morons (the main human characters) would have watched Star Trek just once, they would have known that it takes some courage to try to get in contact and verbally solve whatever the problem might be. The main characters here just try to look beautiful and kill 'em all. I don't know if this is more sad or more stupid. I do not want to comment on the numerous other gigantic plot holes that really makes you gasp and ask, if the producer/director/studio/writer was heavily drinking while writing this piece of crap. The only highlights are: Cool special effects and nice-to-look-at people. That's it.
Damages (2007)
Great show - but lost in trying to trick you
Don't get me wrong, this is a great show. Of course Glen Close and the the other actors make it worth watching. There is a lot to learn about the (very sick) U.S. justice system. It is packed with action, suspense and great dialog. But: Every season the writers and producers want to top the one before. This amounts to an almost hilarious cascade of plot twists that at the end damage Damages. The show slowly but sure moves into the state that you do not believe it any more. You see something and you know, "uh, well, anything can still happen". I wouldn't be surprised if one day Patty would rip off a face mask and reveal herself as being, whatever, Santa Claus. That is definitely the (one and only) bad thing about Damages - otherwise go and watch it. And enjoy it!
Profile of Fear (2011)
Worth watching and truly entertaining
To be honest, I am not very fond of B-movies in terms of movies where you see that they didn't cost a lot of money. In this case I was positively surprised. But you have to follow the story pretty closely, otherwise you are lost. I was seeing this film with three friends and two of them did other stuff (you know these people who have to text and facebook every minute of their life) and they did not get some of the essential twists of this film. I do not like the performance of some of the main cast. Lee Baxter and the Professor guy are definitely not among the best actors I have seen. I also realize that the director himself was playing the part of the strange guy that kind of tells the animated fairy tale - the animation is very nice, but Jan Braband should stay with directing movies and NOT acting. Why do these people always have to show off? Saying that, the story and how the story is told has convinced me, not to say excited me. It was dark, touching, a very strange uneasy atmosphere - but still with a glimpse of hope hidden somewhere. Really, I like that a lot.
