Scream VI (2023)
Meh
I never write reviews, but feel compelled to for Scream VI and not in a positive way. I'm a horror movie buff and I usually love the Scream movies. The first one was such a refreshing entry into the genre. The sequels all brought a little something. The last one had a lot of those original elements while bringing in new characters and bridging them with the old. You still had Sidney and Dewey. No more. Gail cannot carry this movie/franchise alone and unlike many, I'm not a fan of Ortega. The beginning of this one started out interesting. Killers who aren't really the killers, the masks from other films/murders before, but that's when it started going downhill fast. They bring Kirby back, whose character was imo never that impressive or important and put a lot of focus on her. No real explanation. The motive for the killers is just stupid. The reveal is even dumber, not to mention downright impossible for a cop of a former murderer. I mean, come on! How stupid do you think your audience is!?!
Look, I know one is supposed to suspend belief for a horror movie but that's what made Scream different. They were somewhat realistic. This wasn't. Making every mortal character immortal was beyond ridiculous. Not having Neve Campbell was a giant mistake! This one failed. Worst one in the franchise by far.
The Mad Hatter (2020)
I'm speechless...and not in a good way!
Wow, is all I have to say! This movie is truly horrible. I would love to go into depth about why it is so horrible, but I can't because there is simply nothing happening. There is no acting, no plot, no direction (it's all over the place). The music is downright frustratingly annoying, like make you want to rip your eyelashes out one by one annoying. I had to turn it off after a little more than an hour in. I just couldn't get through it and I'm a horror movie buff. I watch them all. I just couldn't do it here, guys. It gets 2 stars for being filmed where I live; one for Leesburg HS & one for Howey In The Hills Mansion. That's it, that's all! Skip it!
Joker (2019)
Superb portrayal of a mentally ill man
I rarely see movies in theaters, usually because I find the hype is not all it is cracked up to be. The last movie I saw in theater was 'A Quiet Place," and the hype for it was consistent for me (won't bore you w/reasons why, different review), so "Joker" brought me out of my theater slump and sadly, the hype for it is misguided.
This is a fantastically well done and well acted movie about a severely mentally unwell man and a system that fails him, repeatedly. Phoenix absolutely deserves an Oscar for his portrayl of Arthur.
However, this is a terrible movie about a super villain or the origin of "The Joker." I did not see nor was I disturbed by any so-called "violence." In fact, I felt the movie sorely lacked it. Where was the homicidal rage? A cpl murders a homocidal maniac doesn't make. In fact, I felt nothing for the few victims of Arthur's. They all deserved it. I felt sympathy the entire movie for Arthur. I wanted him to off ppl b4 he did it and frankly silently cheered for him when he did. This makes me want to cheer for the Joker in any future installements of Batman movies versus cheering for Batman. It is due to this, I feel the movie failed. It failed in making me feel anything but sympathy for Arthur/Joker and it failed at making him a scary, homicidal maniac. It simply made him a broken man, whom his entire life had endured horrible abuses, snapped one day, and decided no more. 7/10 for amazing acting and the mental health portrayl it truly was.
In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)
A solid thriller/sci-fi
I felt compelled to write a review simply because of all the other reviewers' griping. Heavens sake ppl, it's a movie, fictional, make believe. It wasn't passing itself off as a documentary, although here is a newsflash for all of you offended folks, most terrorist attacks in our country are indeed from our own homegrown citizens. As such, I found the movie's message not to be as much a political one, but a fairly scary reality, the terroristic plot part that is. The time travel aspect was interesting. The family twist decent. The acting well done. My only personal criticism is the movie dragged a little and could have been condensed, but this is often a criticism of mine. A solid 6 for original thought and good acting. A loss of a star or two due length and the explanation that time and events cannot be changed, then it shows them changing. A bit of a miss. :-/
Robin Hood (2018)
Yikes, this was a stinker!
I have literally never written a review on IMBD b4 and I will not bore ppl with my first one other than to say, the reviewers on here have it right. This one is a pure stinker. I am a huge film buff and I watch anything and everything to give it a chance and often disagree with reviewers. I rarely have to turn a film off. I turned this film off! One star for the kid who plays Robin because I do think the poor kid tried as best he could and one star for the musical score. That's it...I'm out.
