Oppenheimer (I) (2023)
9/10
A physics story.
23 February 2024
We may be looking at Nolan's best film and probably the one that is his greatest film, both in form (with the immense IMAX cameras) and in substance; a biopic of Oppenheimer through his research into the creation of the atomic bomb and his fall from grace for trying to prevent the arms race that he started.

Rarely has a parade of so many good actors been seen on the big screen and the two that have the most prominence (and stand out the most) are those who were most stagnant for the general public, the more than likely 'Oscar winners' Cillian Murphy and Robert . Downey Jr.

The way of narrating the film with the transition to black and white when they tell the story just as it was in color, telling the story according to Oppenheimer's lived experience, is one of the best resources that Nolan could have used, which despite the time jumps does not falls into his usual pedantry.

The only thing where the film is weak is the lack of explanation of the characters that appear, it does not explain why each scientist who appears is important for the development of the bomb, something that in the first act can be overwhelming for the viewer who does not have a PhD in physics.

Both the OST and the photography and direction are at the level of the best Interstellar or Inception.

Very good Nolan, the less time travel your movies have, the better they are.

Good premise, but too generic.
14 January 2024
Film about five actresses who go to a village in rural and "vaciada" Spain. It is a film about their stories, about how it has brought them to that point in their lives and how they find themselves at that precise moment; it is a good portrait of the fears of that age when you are not adult enough but not young enough either. They tell us about their fears, their past, present and future relationships, in short, about how they are and how they feel.

The strong point is its minimalism and its direction that makes us the sixth participant in this rural retreat, but in the rest... it is very fair, the premise is scarce, it does not go deep into any of the girls so it is very difficult to feel identified with any of them; the stories are quite generic and in some moments it lacks rhythm.

Superbad + booksmart but in hooligan.
7 January 2024
It's like "Fight Club" but in a 'coming of age' that uses all the clichés of these movies, does not take itself seriously and all bathed with some very cool performances and a dose of blood and violence that have nothing to envy to the gore B-movies.

It is a very simple humor, full of teen movie clichés, and that is its great virtue, it is a film that does not take itself seriously and avoids any hint of seriousness or adulthood.

The characters are caricatures of themselves and do not go deep into any of them, they are simply there because they have to be for the story to have a minimum of depth.

A story about human resilience.
6 January 2024
Bayona gives us his best film to date, tells us the tragedy of the Andes, the decisions made by the director from Barcelona, from the accident scene that is the best of the film, incredible staging coupled with a suspense and a handling of the camera that makes us spend the terror sitting in our house, to a masterful equeilibro of terror, drama and an epic "survival" that would like to sign any Hollywood director.

To improve, or simply to equal, the 1993 film was a more than complicated task, but it is not that it comes close to it, it is that it surpasses it and tells us a more complete and emotional story where every moment that is narrated is unmissable and charged with emotions. The fact that the entire cast is Latin American (and speaks Spanish) is something that gives the film a depth that the previous work cannot match.

It has done him a lot of good to stop directing dinosaurs and intense elves.

A pleasant surprise
4 January 2024
With how little you can make a good movie. It is a film that shows us that it is not necessary to have a big production with super famous actors and that during the whole film things are happening that keep you attentive to the screen (with touches of humor to relax the audience) to keep your attention, you simply need a good story to tell without the need to lengthen it up to 2 hours that have become a standard today, whether or not necessary for the narrative.

A very good script coupled with a Sydney Sweeney who gives a spectacular performance and all with a dialogue and a staging that is becoming more and more overwhelming, shows us in a quite truthful way how it must be to face a police interrogation.

In the end it seems that the girls of Euphoria do know how to act.

When money rules, the essence disappears.
3 January 2024
Zero ideas, it falls into the absurd, the characters are a caricature of themselves and all fall into the worst topics of the current series, in addition to being inconsistent with itself.

It could have been one of the best series of the year for the platform but they have preferred to turn it into a "Fast and Furious", discarding everything that made "Money Heist" popular and good.

Love plots all over the place, it seems more like a teenage love series than a series about a robbery; love relationships are established from the first moments, there is hardly any development and everything looks forced and cliché; none of the relationships are organic or unexpected and do not contribute anything to the plot beyond lengthening it.

They have destroyed the best character they had ever created.

What the hell did I just see?
30 December 2023
I don't know what I expected to see, but I sure didn't expect this.

A totally different film than expected, that as it progresses becomes more strange, disconcerting and twisted but that hooks you more and more. Wonderful cinematography, music of ten and very groundbreaking. The twist at the end is totally unexpected, practically its entire third act is something unexpected but that orbits in an ideal way to the rest of the film, at no time it is noticed as something forced to surprise the viewer.

The cinematography may be one of the best of this year, it goes according to what is told in the film, it works as another character that makes you a little confused during the two hours of footage; in addition, the 4:3 aspect ratio makes its atmosphere even more suffocating than it would be with a conventional aspect ratio.

A more rebellious and horny "call me by your name".

Barry Keoghan is something splendid, this guy doesn't act badly even if he wants to (looking forward to his Joker).

The end...
19 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The approach of this film promises a lot, but its execution is not the best and it ends up becoming an almost generic cop movie with a pretty bad ending. We are promised a police drama that will address issues such as discrimination, racism or abuse of power and it remains just that, promises.

The film quickly becomes a standard cop movie which makes it a mediocre film as its approach is not that of a cop movie so it dilutes its initial spirit to try something it is not.

The ending gives the viewer the feeling that it is the end of another movie because you don't feel the death of the teenager, it feels like just another death in a generic action movie and since you haven't empathized with, nor known, the two policemen you don't feel their fear of the consequences of the murder as your own.

Scream VI (2023)

This time, the formula works.
30 March 2023
Scream VI is a pleasant surprise coming from the previous Scream. It's a movie, which still doesn't take itself seriously but does it in such a way that you enjoy it.

No unnecessary drama, you want everyone to die in the cruelest and goriest way possible and that's what this movie gives you.

Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera's duo works, this is something that can bring this saga back to the splendor it had before the 243 sequels/prequels/remakes/reboots/series.

The final twist is somewhat ridiculous, but it is in its favor that it is unexpected. You spend the film imagining who the killer is while enjoying some brutal murders only to be surprised at the end within reason.

Correct and very funny movie for genre lovers.

marvel, please, stop releasing so many movies.
30 March 2023
Let's be clear, we are looking at what is most likely the worst MCU film to date. It is a copy and paste of the other movies but without charisma, flat script, boring and predictable, the actors try but can't do magic. It is a long film in which most of the sequences contribute nothing and only serve to move the film forward.

Kang is not scary, he doesn't intimidate, he seems more like a generic villain than the big threat they want to show us. He is not seen as a powerful villain who is capable of standing up to any avenger. The final battle is the most boring of the entire MCU, it has no hook, everything is predictable and the ending they give MODOK is very cowardly and continuist.

What used to be the strong point of many of Marvel's films, the CGI, in this film is crappy. It is too noticeable at certain moments and at others it is not very well cared for or worked, made in haste to release yet another product.

Honestly, I would not recommend paying to see this movie.

A breakup that hurts.
10 March 2023
In this film we will see the conflict between two friends, when one of them decides, suddenly and without further explanation, to end the friendship that unites them. The director takes us through the stages of a breakup, even if it is not a love breakup, it is a breakup. But what he is really going to show us is what war is.

The Irish civil war.

A war that is a war between friends, neighbors, family... that forces everyone to position themselves on one side or the other and ends up hurting them. It teaches us about resentment, how war hurts all parties (whether or not they participate in the conflict), collateral damage and immigration. The latter is something very important in the history of Ireland. And, in particular, the impact of war on those involved and those not involved.

What is overlooked in this film is the great performance of the supporting actors, both Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan give sublime performances.

Finally, something very important is to watch it in its original version. The Irish accent gives a magical touch to the film that is missing in the other versions.

A stark and realistic reminder of what war is all about.
15 February 2023
As someone who has not read the book on which it is based, I will only talk about the film here.

The film may be one of the starkest and most realistic war films of the last 50 years. It portrays war as a cruel, animalistic, inhuman and stupid place where young men go to die for the glory of generals who are comfortably playing at "map painting".

The film excels in every aspect. The staging, the photography and the performances are sublime, perfectly portraying the harshness of war and the change in the characters themselves, as they move from the initial illusion of seeking the eternal glory of the battlefield to a vital and defeatist apathy that will accompany them until the next great war.

The focus of the performances has been on Daniel Brühl, whose performance is sparse but wonderful; but, in my opinion, the duo of Felix Kammerer and Albrecht Schuch make the film truly memorable.

Austin Butler impressive!
10 February 2023
It may not be the best biopic, nor the best film about the world of music, but what Austin Butler does is arguably the best performance in a biopic so far this century. Austin gives us a human Elvis, more focused on his human side and his contradictions as a good-hearted artist who is taken advantage of by all those around him, which leads to a tragic end even though he is still young.

What the film can be criticised for the most is the lack of depth given to the artist's last years, which could be considered the most important or remarkable years of his life; how Elvis went from being a world-famous artist to dying ruined and cheated by all those around him.

In short, it is a good biopic, which, despite its strong points, is able to summarise and show us clearly the life of one of the greatest singers in history.

Austin Butler deserves an award!

A gothic thriller.
1 February 2023
The film takes us back to the year 1830. It is set in a rural area of the most superstitious USA. It manages to keep you glued to the screen for the first ten minutes of its two hour running time with this simple setting.

It is a film that has very clear bases, a crime with supernatural overtones, a tormented detective with a vague past, a cultured and bohemian young man who ends up becoming his friend and apprentice... but although they are clichés seen in a thousand films of this style, this film does them very well and makes you forget that they are recurring plots in this genre, which is very important in this type of film.

The most remarkable aspect of this movie, apart from the ending, is Cristian Bale's performance, which, as always with him, is magnificent; the cinematography, which transports us back to the beginning of the 19th century in rural America on the east coast; and the script and direction, which work hand in hand to create a detective movie that takes itself seriously and does not fall into the most common vices of the genre.

Where is the terror?
1 February 2023
I went with low expectations, not expecting anything beyond the typical "horror" film of recent years, jumpscares, some tension and a predictable ending with a forgettable plot twist. And yet, it is worse than expected. There is no tension, no gore, no scares and no horror in general. The beginning is extremely long and adds nothing to the film, because the character development is practically non-existent.

All of the above would not be a problem if it weren't for the fact that everything they promised has been broken and the film remains in a no man's land that will not satisfy any of its target audience. Too childish for adults and too adult for children.

The performances are the best part of the film, but the problem with the script is that you can't empathise with any of the characters, they are all irritating, hopeless and rather stupid. The deaths happen off-camera and the final "fight" is more like a Marvel movie than anything in the genre.

And please stop with the embarrassing dances.

The crudest portrait of rural and "vaciada" Spain.
12 January 2023
Splendid film that bases much of its story in a suffocating atmosphere and a slow narrative pace but that creates that aura that overwhelms you throughout the film.

The performances, the direction and the photography, not to mention the script, are sublime and are destined to become an immediate classic of Spanish cinema, since the portrayal of this forgotten and impoverished Spain is sublime.

It is a work that perfectly captures the differences between the local people of the rural communities and those who settle from the cities and how the way of life of both clashes and are practically irreconcilable differences due to the opposite way of life and values that both communities have.

As an inhabitant of a village similar to the one shown in the film I can say that it is a very faithful portrayal of the differences and conflicts between the natives and those who come from outside eager to implement a change of life without asking or taking into account the local population.

Casts of great actors are no longer useful.
12 January 2023
The film bases almost its entire premise on a cast of great, and famous, actors who try to sustain a poor and rather predictable script that is also extremely confusing.

It is extremely confusing because you don't get to understand the film until the third act, until then it is a succession of dialogues that rarely bring any development to the plot or the characters, as the latter do not advance in the whole film, there is no evolution. Just as they begin, they end.

The speech that the film tries to give is totally legitimate and necessary in today's times but it gets lost in a crude and convoluted plot of investigation, crime, I do not know. Film that promised much but remains a mere pastime that will not be remembered in a short time.

surprisingly good
30 March 2022
A film I saw because of the Oscar post-hype where much of the critics were talking about how, yet another year, Best Animated Feature was not fair.

Is it a children's cartoon? Yes. But there's more, its reading of family relationships in adolescence and early adulthood is at a higher level than most pixar films (except inside out), as well as dealing with feelings from a real point of view as something that doesn't change from one day to the next and self-acceptance as part of the road to maturity. The treatment of LGBT people is one of the best of recent times, they don't need to wallow in their orientation for the creation of the character, it's just something that is there and treated as something normal not something that comprises and forms your whole SELF.

As for the more technical aspects the film doesn't excel at anything but it doesn't lose out to its competitors, it's a film that doesn't get long, it doesn't lose pace at any point and the songs/moments of music are perfectly implemented.

Oscar stolen.

Kristen and nothing else
30 March 2022
Without Kristen Stewart's extraordinary (and Oscar-worthy) performance, this film would have passed by without a hitch. Overly contemplative and insipid dialogue fills the film.

It's a film that wallows in mediocrity of script and overly forced scenes for the viewer to say "how spectacular." It doesn't delve into Diana's life, we don't know how she gets to her situation or how it ends. It seems that today's cinema is full of this, they don't like to tell stories, they prefer you to imagine them and this in a biopic is a catastrophic mistake.

The script is terrible
22 March 2022
Despite having a good approach, although nothing new to tell the truth, the film is presented as a tension thriller that then has neither one thing nor the other.

The film lays the foundations poorly and from there on nothing can lift it and as the film progresses what is built does not hold, attempts at plot twists that are obvious, predictability and a host of failures that make this film something very forgettable.

Despite the chemistry between Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas the film feels forced, poorly constructed and with an ending that will leave most audiences indifferent.

Another lockdown film that didn't need to be made.

Insufficient and unsatisfactory
17 March 2022
Animated series that expands the Marvel multiverse, it starts very well but it starts to deflate and except for the last two episodes the series goes in free fall. The central episodes can become very repetitive and sometimes become long, something very problematic considering that the episodes only last half an hour.

As for the animation, it is a middle ground between realism and more traditional animation, a mixture that is close to comics but without abandoning the aesthetics of cinema. The stories have a narrative more typical of the MCU than a comic book, this should not be bad except for the times when the story becomes long or too monotonous.

Overall it is a series with very good ideas but inconsistent with the fluidity and narrative rhythm of the same, the last two episodes should set the tone for the following seasons.

Better but insufficient
16 March 2022
A film that takes too much time to introduce characters that end up being flat and barely evolve during the almost three-hour running time.

The plot is presented more predictable than the previous film but the successive plot twists make it more unpredictable than its predecessor, on the other hand, the resolution of the case is done in a rushed manner caring more about the how than the who or the why leaving the film in a rather forgettable no man's land.

On the other hand, the best it shows us is Poirot's past and how he began to become what he is in the movies. Both the production design and costumes are the best thing about the film but they overuse CGI for the exteriors and it takes you out of the mood they are trying to create.

The Batman (2022)
9/10
The jewel that is destined to change superhero movies.
16 March 2022
Following the director's filmography we can find several common points between this film and "War of the Planet of the Apes". In both he began with a strong base of personality of the characters but molding them for the epic that narrated that little, or nothing, resembled the classic. In this film he takes the realistic vision created by Nolan in the cinema even further and takes the "world's greatest detective" attributed to Batman in the comics to the extreme.

It is a thriller that drinks from modern classics like Se7en or Zodiac as well as from the 70's crime movies. The narrative moves at a very good pace driven by causality that makes you be tied to the seat without blinking.

The action is very dosed but very well paced, especially they are very coherent at a narrative level that could be real.

Pattinson fits perfectly as Batman even though his Bruce Wayne side is totally secondary.

Both the soundtrack and the cinematography press you against your seat thanks to their contrast and the oppressive atmosphere they both create in perfect sync with the rest of the film.

All goes well until the final.
17 January 2022
It has the best of masterchef but without the soap opera that accompanies it. It is a real cooking competition where the judges are some of the best chefs in the world. It's a spectacular culinary journey across the world, but, the final is a farce and the least deserved winner in recent times.

It seems that they ignore that in the course the one who has the best cooking and the most technique should win and they change it to the one who should win. Very disappointing ending and not in keeping with the rest of the program.

Try to tell a lot in a short time
19 November 2021
One of Marvel's most ambitious films, from the cast to the direction and composer to the fact that it introduces us to a new dimension of the Marvel Universe. The heroes are no longer humans or demigods, they are now gods whose missions are from a higher plane than the human one.

It is a film that seeks to explain and introduce a whole new universe while telling a story, which results in the film at times overwhelming the viewer with a huge amount of background information in a very short time as you try to understand the main story.

Still, it's one of the best Marvel films of recent times, especially thanks to the cast and direction, and shows that Marvel knows how to make more serious films that work very well as superhero movies. Finally, the pacing at times is not smooth and it gets bogged down in a succession of facts that are only mentioned afterwards and it is assumed that the characters already know them.

PS- the best scenes of a superhero in super speed that have ever been made, they give a real sense of speed.

PS2- Criticism of the "political agenda" and other nonsense is ridiculous and unfounded.
