Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)
Not good but not bad
This movie is not bad but not good. It is entertaining, with some over the top jokes and action.
I think the main reason why this movie didn't capture the same energy as the first is because Billy isn't really the main character. It feels like he is sidelined by everyone in it. We only ever see his alter ego Shazam, and we don't really see why he always says all or no one. Everything he does is explained by someone else. Everything we want to know about the main character we don't see it, we hear it from other characters. The movie feels like it is more centered around Freddy, and that he is the main character. A lot of the story is centered around his crush. That is basically why he and everyone else is alive in the end. Billy only ever does is talk nonsense and solves everything with his strength. The movie says he will soon be 18, but Zachory acts his part like Billy is still a little kid who just became a superhero. To me it seemed like the character is more mature when he is Billy then when he is Shazam, there seemed to be a huge difference, and it wasn't like that in the first one.
When you don't think too much about who the main character is, the movie isn't bad. It has some funny, entertaining jet serious elements. The actor who plays Freddy portrayed the struggle of his character really well, you could feel when he was in pain. Later in the movie the parents are the ones that are the funniest with their reactions.
The product placements are a bit on the nose, and really strange.
The plot is interesting, but the execution is a bit of the problem. It seems like the general problem with DC movies is the later. It's like they take the plot from the comics but don't want to follow the story and change everything, so it does but doesn't make sense and so it ends badly.
Personally, this movie shouldn't have been a cinema flop, but it ended like that. The reason for that is people are generally fed up with generic superhero movies in cinemas.
