Heavy but Brilliant!
24 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I can't believe the overall rating of 5.9!!! ...especially when so many reviewers gave such high ratings including many 10/10s!!! As for those few who gave a low score... they must have either missed the whole point of the movie, were irritated by the Christian aspects or maybe they just can't believe this is a true story. The whole film was incredible! The acting superb!!! Nathan Wilson and Martin Sacks absolutely shone! All the main characters were excellent and even the actors who played the smaller parts were fantastic. The film was so well paced and the photography extremely skillful. Parts of the movie were really harrowing regarding the awful revelations of how innocent people can be let down so badly by the judicial system and end up in Maximum security prison! This film was so courageous in not shying away from all the Christian aspects which were depicted in a superbly understated way. There was also the hope given to the viewers by revealing the truth that not all prison guards are corrupt sadists! Thank you to everyone involved in this masterpiece of truth!

A Gentle Bit Of Fun Albeit Rather Average
21 March 2024
This could have been so much better. The script was mediocre, the storyline fairly predictable. Apart from the goofs already mentioned by others, another big mistake was when Maddie & James were in the red sports convertible, they weren't wearing seatbelts and there was no sign of any seatbelts fitted in the car! In Ireland its compulsory for all cars to have seatbelts and for them to be worn whilst driving! Lindsay is a lovely actress and she did the best she could but the film itself let her down. Aidan Jordan, who played the Catholic priest was excellent! The other positive aspects... The stunning scenery, the beautiful photography and the lovely music were thoroughly enjoyable!

Could Have Been Even Better!
5 March 2024
This movie could have been even better. There were several mistakes that shouldn't have happened... The bands, Backstreet Boys and N Sync were mentioned but they weren't around until the mid nineties. Micky Dolenz's hairstyle wasn't accurate and, considering how well they did with the actors they chose to play the members of The Monkees, they could have done much better with Jimi Hendrix. The actors they chose for Davy Jones, Peter Tork, Mike Nesmith and Micky Dolenz were brilliant!! George Stanchev, who played Davy Jones, was incredible. It was wonderful to hear all their songs again and to relive those awesome days of The Monkees. Some of the hairstyles and fashions worn by some of the support cast could have been more representative of that era but on the whole they did pretty well and they were absolutely spot on on for all the main characters. Loved the little tribute to Mike Nesmith's mum, in the scene where they show Mike using some correction fluid on his manuscript paper! (She invented the first correction fluid about 10 years earlier, in her own kitchen!) I felt the pacing of the story a little erratic, with some parts not given as much detail as there could have been compared with other scenes that were given a lot more time and the ending was quite abrupt. I wish the story could have been continued a little longer. Overall, it was a nice step into the past, to those happy days thanks greatly to the lovely band, The Monkees, who spread joy, laughter and their awesome music!!!

What a waste of a Stellar Cast!
19 February 2024
This series showed so much promise! An incredible line-up of actors for virtually every character in the story. What a shame the script and the story was such a mess! Every possible scenario for the disappearances was brought up but hardly any of them were resolved clearly. So many good actors included but a lot of the characters seemed pointless. Even the conclusion of the series was messy and only partially clarified. The sound was so poor too! Couldn't hear a lot of the quieter voices properly despite my clinically tested excellent hearing. The script was messy and inadequate. The different characters were confusing. The conclusion was full of holes. I really expected so much better, especially coming from the BBC.

Definitely worth watching!
20 January 2024
As a sufferer of ME/CFS for 11years, I was very pleased to find this film and felt affirmed, reassured, validated and hopeful after watching it! I wonder if the cluster phenomenon has been explored enough?? The Royal Free Hospital outbreak in 1955 would not have been at the newer hospital in Hampstead (opened in 1974) shown in the film but it would have been at the original hospital in Grays Inn Rd, Kings Cross which opened in 1828. Therefore shouldn't environmental factors also be considered not only for that outbreak but also for other cluster locations? The parts of this doco which spoke of the poor name for this illness "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" are SO true! The name is insulting, offensive, misleading and an utter trivialisation of this terrible, life-altering illness!!! I just pray that those heroic, compassionate doctors and scientists continue their difficult courageous work and that their numbers increase around the World! Most of all I pray for all sufferers of this awful, invisible but life-altering disease and those loved ones who support, care for and encourage them. May hope and love increase for you and may there be real, life-restoring help in the very near future. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🕊

Lots of Potential
7 January 2024
Great actors, idealic scenery in Finland and spain, good story line. However, whoever did the English subtitles couldn't have been English! A lot of poor translation, typos & obvious errors. The continuity was also flawed in several places. Loved the idea of the storyline moving back and forth between 2 very different countries. The main characters were very well portrayed but, sadly, some of the other characters were less convincing, especially some of the non-speaking background people. Hopefully, the second series improves in these areas. I also hope there will be further exploration and revelations for the main characters.

SHOULD BE RATED "M"
20 October 2023
A good series, well acted with great cinematography and music. Just can't think what possessed the Classifications Board to allow it to be rated 'PG'!!! "Mild sexual references' is a most definitely a euphemism. There are graphic autopsy scenes and the level of violence in the battle scenes is well above the limits for a PG classification. In addition, the adult themes and the graphic views of the many injuries sustained in the fighting should be at least M rated. I would have given at least a 7/10 but could not condone this series being passed off as PG. It is not suitable for younger people and could be very traumatic for this age group!

The well-known actors as well as those less familiar are excellent. There has been great attention to the detail with regard to the costumes, scenery and props, all being in keeping with the era and geographical locations. The plot is well-paced and the script is intelligent and even educational, especially with regards to the different languages incorporated. I hope your adult audiences enjoy it greatly.

So disappointing!!
25 September 2023
The idea sounded really hopeful but the implementation of this experiment was awful! Why on Earth weren't these lovely families given good financial advice from Day 1, including education in realistic budgeting, counselling on easy record-keeping, instruction on planning ahead for future bills, etc, etc??? This would not only have set them all on good, realistic pathways but it would have also educated many viewers in these crucial aspects of daily living. Lessons like these that should have been taught at school for all students! Logarithms and algebra, reading ordnance survey maps or learning about physics or chemistry are hardly crucial for ordinary daily living! These families should also have been offered advice about the type of work or business ventures that would suit their particular strengths & abilities, with straightforward education in their chosen pathways and the proper assistance given, in the real hope of them actually achieving those goals. Eg. Business planning, including possible grants that may be available for them. All that together with helpful advice on purchasing larger items, such as a car, and the pitfalls to watch out for. This would have helped them much more and your viewers too. One of the participants actually said they felt like a kid in a candy shop and that's exactly how the participants were treated! I felt this was like a spectator sport, where these vulnerable people were just put on display to be criticised and ridiculed. These innocent human "guinea-pigs" being left to their own devices to cope with a life-changing opportunity without being given the tools to make the best possible use of it and not having the experience to deal with it either. Don't know if I can even bear to watch the whole series.

Could have been even better.
22 September 2023
This tragic story of the murders of these 5 desperate girls was superbly acted by a terrific cast of brilliant actors. Excellent scripts and perfect pacing all came together to portray the trauma suffered not only by these girls and their loved ones, but the tragic suffering of victims of drug abuse. It was also a revelation of how poorly financed and understaffed the agencies are that work so hard to help girls like these and others in a variety of horrific situations.

Something though was really wrong with the poor filming, photography, sound and lighting. Not only did it let the actors down, who all did such incredible work, but it somehow made it very obvious that they were just on different film sets and at various film locations with a filmcrew that were taking shots from different angles with microphones nearby. They constantly broke the fourth wall in very negative ways. The BBC are usually so much better than this. Was it due to a low budget or just inferior camera, sound and lighting crews? Such a shame! An important series as this deserved far better treatment.

Hopes dashed
8 September 2023
With such a stellar cast, it sounded really promising. The plot was messy, the script really amateurish and the ending as unclear as most of the storyline.

There was too much gratuitous and unnecessary violence and there were no subtle or clever parts in any of the three episodes.

It was as though the writer's main plan was to confuse the viewers further and further and then he or she either didn't bother to untangle the mess or because they had got everything in such a horrendous muddle they weren't actually able to!!! The actors did the best they could but one can't make the proverbial purse out of a sow's ear!!! Nothing was explained and so many things seemed absolutely senseless or irrelevant. Please bring this great cast back but with a MUCH better series, to make it worth their time and to ensure you actually do impress your viewers and critics and have a series that ITV can be proud of! A TV series that will go down in history as a major success!

Sounded Promising
2 September 2023
Hugely disappointing! Such a promising cast but lacked the pure joy that far better musicals, such as, "Sunshine on Leith" or "Fisherman's Friends " & "Fisherman's Friends 2: One and All" have. If it had just stayed classy and didn't deteriorate into rudeness, it could have been a lovely uplifting, 'feel good' movie that everyone needs these days and of which there are far too few. Watched for a while, in the hope it would pick up but it just deteriorated into a disappointing third rate show. Eventually gave up on it regretting I'd wasted my time. The fact that it has been described as beautiful, gentle and having culture couldn't be more inaccurate. So disappointing.

1st Series Excellent but 2nd Series totally disappointing
18 June 2023
Loved the first season! Really enjoyable with interesting story lines and great acting, photography, etc. Loved the beautiful scenery and the plots for each episode.

The 2nd season was so disappointing!!!! Was the latter written and or directed by a different person?

Season 2 was so full of wokeness and political "correctness" that it became laughable! One could almost predict what the next bit of wokeness inserted to each episode would be!!!

If they are planning to do a 3rd Season I hope they just get back to the qualities and priorities of the original series. Some good story lines and intelligently written scripts with better values being emphasised.

A Brilliant & Deeply Touching Story!
3 June 2023
This film deserves so many more stars! It is a deeply moving study of love and loss, ageing and true heroism. Timothy Spall is absolutely outstanding! Phyllis Logan is truly excellent too despite the smaller role she plays as his wife in the later years of their marriage. The subtleties of this portrayal are brilliantly captured. The photography, the music and the non-verbal emotions and communication all go to enhance this true masterpiece. Congratulations to those who cast such a realistic choice of actors, including those who play the younger version of Tom and Mary Harper, this gentle, kind couple. Every single actor in this movie was just brilliant! This lovingly crafted film is a deep reminder of what values really matter in life, where bad behaviour is is seen for what it is and courage and virtue are encouraged for every single human being! Congratulations and thank you to EVERYONE involved in this beautiful film.

SUPERB!
4 April 2023
This was a courageous and deeply inspired and inspiring movie about Abraham's life and his unimaginable struggles, culminating in the ultimate request by God to sacrifice his ONLY son, whom he had waited so many years for. The superb acting, the incredibly well thought out script, the intense photography and haunting music come together in a masterpiece! For those not giving this film a high rating, I am just so sorry!... They obviously just didn't get the depth and subtleties of this whole monumental work of art. The actors and writers have clearly depicted the long-suffering, the years of waiting in hope, the terrible time and place the characters lived in and through and the unbearable challenges they had to face! God bless EVERYONE involved in creating this remarkable movie as well as all those who go to see it. May everyone be deeply inspired and filled with a greater, deeper understanding! 🙏🏼🕊

Deserves a much higher rating
5 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Can't believe this got such a low score!!! As per usual, Clint Eastwood never disappoints! The slow build up is intentional, the totally natural manner of the main characters is brilliant. Stories of such heroism deserve far more credit! Really enjoyed it and tears were hard to fight back. (I'm not usually that moved!) Awesome example of how not to automatically give kids a bad label, just because they come from broken homes! Loved the two mums' attitude towards the female junior school teacher! 😂 Nothing is overplayed. Just loved the many subtleties throughout the story! Thanks for this EXCELLENT movie!

Alun Armstrong at his Best!
26 June 2022
Extremely well done portrayal of the hunt for the infamous "Yorkshire Ripper"! Alun Armstrong is superb as the main character, Assist Chief Const George Olfield. He and Richard Ridings, as Det Supt Dick Holland, are excellent and with a great supporting cast who retell this grim chapter in 20th Century England very convincingly and accurately. I'm mystified why these two stars aren't heading the main cast line-up on this web-page. They deserve so much credit.

Superb except for one issue
25 May 2022
Would have dearly loved to have given this wonderful movie 10 stars (and more!) but unfortunately the diction was a real issue. A lot of the lines were mumbled and in a strong American drawl and I couldn't catch what was being said. Such a shame as those were often the most important lines. (My hearing is fine and I wasn't alone in experiencing this problem.) I shall definitely look forward to seeing it again when I can use subtitles. The acting was absolutely superb and the story was so moving. The depiction of Our Lady was disappointing (too much make-up & a tacky-looking veil) but apart from that, a lovely movie. God bless Mark, Mel and co! Please do more movies like this (but please speak a little more clearly.) 🙏🏼🕊

This was a well acted, well produced and directed movie showing the heroism of WWII soldiers and medical personnel trapped behind enemy lines. The excellent photography, the background music all add to the emotion and atmosphere of the story.

Season 1 - Very Good but missed its full potential
16 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Great plot and concept. Excellent acting especially the two main characters, Heidi & Walter. Annoyingly long drawn out credits at the end of each episode, especially as the episodes weren't that long. Was the DOD boss also corrupt? Was Colin genuinely remorseful? So many open ends and missed opportunities. The final episode was so disappointing.... Why did Heidi take the blame with Walter's mum when her motives had always been good and really genuine with Walter especially. If she had told the truth, she and Walter could have easily ended up happily together. What a pity. And what happened to the DOD investigator? Too many disappointing/loose ends.

Really Enjoyed This Remake!
9 March 2022
I really enjoyed Season 2 of this remake of the 1972 series. Marc Warren is superb! I much prefer his subtle and skillful interpretation of the character of Van Der Valk to the original! His team are a good fit too but I hope Brad and Job are allowed to develop their characters further if there's another season. (Especially Brad. He has to be more than just the comedian of the team.) Hopefully we will given more of Hendrik's personal background too. Wonderful scenery and great photography. I loved the way the theme tune provides a gentle echo of the memorable theme tune from the original series. I really hope there will be further seasons to follow.

Miserable & Gratuitous
6 February 2022
With such superb actors as Olivia Colman and Ed Harris starring, together with a lovely location I had high hopes. Unfortunately, deeply disappointing. Plot was full of holes with completely unnecessary scenes put in purely for gratuitous shock effect. Don't waste your precious time on this movie.

I can't believe all the negative comments!!! Maybe you have to be English to appreciate this lovely, light-hearted, sunny TV series! It's a real breath of fresh air as well as a great look at life in England during that era! Bradley Walsh is superb as Pop Larkin and the rest of the cast, so well chosen. I can't wait for the next series!!!

If only the English subtitles could be reviewed and greatly improved upon, this would be a really excellent series on St Teresa of Avila's Way of Perfection but the translation into English for the subtitles is really awful.

Easy, Feel-good Movie
29 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Light, feel-good movie. They just missed an opportunity in the ending... Part of the deal should have been that the online dating site must agree to change their name from "Love Guaranteed", which was the whole point of the court case. Otherwise a relaxing, enjoyable, funny & heart-warming movie.

Ignore the Negative Reviews
28 October 2021
The messages in this film are even more relevant today than when the film was released. Consumerism and materialism are not important as we've been led to believe. The covid lockdowns and mandatory restrictions are opening people's eyes to what is really important and this film illustrates it perfectly. The acting is excellent and César Troncosco, who plays Mellon, is SUPERB. Thank you for making this poignant movie.
