The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
Not as good or as profound as it thinks
I found myself finishing characters sentences, the jump scares were either completely predictable or random and undeserved, the CGI was lazy for shots when used. Also, we've seen Mike Flannigan do this same format, multiple times with the same actors now; big ensemble with each episode focusing on a specific character more so than the others and now, it's gradually starting to feel like the same actors playing the same characters. Still though it's got good actors and it is very easy to watch. I'm just a bit of a horror snob I guess and I expect more from Flannigan as he is a bit of a bastion of modern horror.
Near Dark (1987)
Watch it just for Bill Paxton's performance!
Watched last night, it's reminiscent of the first terminator film in some ways. Bill Paxton nails every second of screen time that he has, definitely worth watching for just for him.
Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021)
Slow motor.
Great setting but a bad movie.
Mid-film there is a scandalous advert shoehorned in that's promoting the features of a new camera, including slow mo. I thought it was hilarious.
Eli (2019)
Good concept, weak execution
Had a lot going for it early on but it's hard to make an immersive and genuinely scary film when the script and some of the acting are this poor.
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
Guilty Pleasure
I'm a huge fan of both individual franchises and I can see why so many were disappointed. However with good use of props with a good setting I think this film is a massive guilty pleasure. I do not think this is a great film. I think it's an entertaining film.
