I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore. (2017)
Great surpise, black thriller/comedy
Great roles, great acting, great plot and winds. Most characters are highly original and had have some hilarious dialogues. Had to laugh about mrs. Rumack, great role. Never heard of Melanie Lynskey but she played great. Give this one a try, Original and entertaining. One of the best movies I've seen this year.
Searching (2018)
Form over substance
Good movie, well made. Interesting plot with some winds, but it never gets really exciting. It's rather difficult to connect with the characters since communication is done through the computer screen and social media where I would like to see real people interact with each other (yes, also nonverbally). After seeing the movie I was really disappointed because I expected so much reading all the very positive reviews. So, great form but a rather cold experience.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Entertaining if you're in the mood
Sometimes you just want to hang in the couch and watch something and not think too much. Just be entertained and relax. Well, this movie isn't that relaxing. Lots of action, fighting, fast dialogue, many characters and change of locations. A dwarf, a racoon, a black panther, a spiderman, a robot, aliens and hulks. And all have some kind of supernatural power. Great kids stuff. Quality of acting or character development are not really main aims here. Effects, animations and stunts are really good. So, turn your mind off, grab some popcorn and enjoy. An hour after viewing you'll have forgotten you've seen it.
Notes on Blindness (2016)
Far too long...
It probably is not socially desirable to bash a film that has intellectual and artistic aspirations. Nonetheless I'm having a go at it. First of all, this is a documentary. It's very, very, very slow. Now and again interesting cinematography and an interesting premise about the role of vision in the formation of memories. As proposed it has material for say 25 minutes, this documentary is an hour longer. My wife gave up viewing after about 25 mintues. My daughter and myself sat it through but not to our satisfaction. Maybe if the perspectives of the other characters were more elaborated it could have been more interesting, but this wasn't done. So, don't be surprised if you're having a go viewing this, you find yourself pressing the power button after 25 minutes. Despite the favorable reviews of other viewers and expert critics.
Wonder (2017)
Clichés, painfully sweet, predictable, moralizing, for children...
Bad movie. Maybe it works for children but the script is very predictable and full of clichés. Unbelievable and silly twists in the plot are annoying. We've seen movies about minorities and bullying in school too often and this movie does not add anything. The underdog becomes the heroe and the proces takes steps that are really too predicatble and toothachingly sweet. At the end you realize that you have seen a boring movie that from the start tries to shove a simple message through your throat. The movie tries hard to be emotionally moving but fails painfully, except maybe when you are 12 or younger.
American Honey (2016)
Skip this one......
Normally I choose movies by their IMDb-rating. This movie was a 7 average, but boy, it was a bad decision to watch this one. So this review is meant to lower the average to help movie lovers picking movies. This is one of the most boring movies ever, and it lasts for 2h43mins. Pure hell. The plot is unrealistic and non-evolving. Characters all seem to have some kind of brain damage so it is really hard to identify or connect with them. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
The Martian (2015)
Let's make another astronautmovie....
Coz' they're popular right now. Interstellar and Gravity worked, so let's make another one. Why? Well, who cares, it will sell anyway. A plot? OK, what about The Revenant on Mars. Astronaut needs to survive under terrible conditions and returns to earth? Does it need to be believable or scientifically realistic? No, not really, we'll get a star actor, let's say, Matt Damon, put in some great special effects and boom...it'll work. It's a good movie, little boring half way through. What's really annoying is the need to explain everything to the audience. Since we're dumb and it's too difficult to explain science stuff not using words. So Matt talks a lot to himself. An annoying scene was at the end as the astronaut stands in front of his class and utters some hero like corny American epilogue lines. To summarize: not very original or realistic, sometimes dull. Not really memorable, just a good, albeit not great, movie. The music is the best part.
Tsumetai nettaigyo (2010)
Very disturbing....
Well made film actually, good acting, suspenseful, some cynicism and humor here and there. Some humor I could really appreciate as well. I found this film by using the tags 'underrated horror movie' in google. Is it underrated? Well, it's shocking. Most of all it's very, very bloody and violent. I suspect it's possible to get into a psychosis after watching this movie, if you're susceptible to it. If not, you will never forget this movie, at best. It's disturbing, not meaning to be realistic. I watched this with my wife and when our kids aged 16 and 17 came down from upstairs we stopped the movie to watch the rest later. It's not to be shown to kids, is my opinion. Does it have a message, is it art? I really couldn't tell. But yes, it's very disturbing, that I can tell you..
The Revenant (2015)
Mind boggling trip, no drugs needed
One of the best cinematic experiences I've had in my 50 odd years life. There are movies with better stories or plots. Not great dialogues either, but this is not what the film is about. What sets this film apart is a visually overwhelming experience where you can almost feel the hardships DiCaprio as Glass is going through yourself. Impressive nature, great music, memorable scenes (and not only the bear), painstaking emotion. And no, it's not necessary to have emotion in a scene and explore it verbally for hours. That's not what they did in those days anyway. This is the kind of film that stays with you long after, for which you need to go to a cinema for the mind-blowing camera-work. This is a trip for which you need no drugs. That's is to say: if this is the kind of movie that suits your taste. If you think it isn't: please give it a try.
Spotlight (2015)
Disappointing for an Oscar-winner
The story is not new, it's been all over the news for years, at least in Europe, where I live, and I suspect in the US as well. The movie didn't really add anything new in that sense. Acting is good, as is the music, but not exceptional. Visually it's not stunning or especially interesting, no reason to go to the cinema to see it. No real turning points, exceptional dialogues, characters to identify with, emotional scenes. In fact, I found the movie boring at times. Overall a very good film, but really ridiculous it beat The Revenant for best picture. I guess it's a politically correct choice and maybe that suits a lot of people, because I didn't read a lot of complaints or bad reviews about this movie.
