The Assistant (2019)
Realistically dark
I believe this film falls under the category of polar reactions : you will absolutely love it or utterly hate it. You will have to watch it to decide. I found it very interesting as it seeks to resemble real time, one day in an office. That might seem slow to some but to me it conveyed this sense of weariness, boredom, uneasiness and claustrophobic bleakness it intended to convey. Half said, half stifled are the intimidations, the agonies and the disappointments this girl experiences. Every time the phone rings there's a muted suspense. The performances are brilliant, Julia Garner fully assumes the part and Matthew Macfadyen is definitely the congenial bully he is supposed to be, smiling but really delivering his threats to the Assistant who wants to make a complaint! It is atmospheric, dark and educational! Give it a try and make up your own mind!
Quiz (2020)
Exciting!!!
I really enjoyed the first episode of Quiz! It is a wonderful production, paid attention to details. The cast is absolutely amazing! Matthew Macfadyen is brilliant as Charles Ingram, his natural acting is simply captivating!!! Can't wait for episode 2!
Succession (2018)
Delightful
I believe that most of us have watched films and series about rich people, power figures, kings and queens; they are all so interesting as the provide an insight (biased or not) to lives of uncommon people, hence the intrigue. The Roy family are filthy rich, yes. Yet, this is not a show about money but rather about character. It stresses above all the fact that money does not necessarily bring happiness to your life. Too much of a good thing can be a problem and family dysfunction is not a matter of wealth. What is also remarkable is that the show does not fall under one genre: it is dramatic, comic and satirical at the same time. All cast give wonderful performances, but to my humble opinion the most advantageous characters are Tom and Greg. Their verbally abusive interactions are delightful. Matthew Macfadyen brilliantly portrays an insecure man torn between ambition and moral scruples and with a very weird sense of humor. In the absence of archfiends or pillars of benevolence anything goes. Everyone comes across wonderfully human and the dialogue is indeed natural. The first season was really intriguing and I eagerly expect the second one. If you have not watched it yet, please do by all means.
