Fright Night (1985)
One of the top vampire movies of all time.
This movie is glorious, everything about it is perfect. The effects are better than modern CGI, the actors are glorious, the plot and writing are beautiful.
There's not a moment of this movie you won't love if you enjoy classic vampires and don't mind a dash of comedy in your horror, but the comedy never turns the whole thing into silliness. It just points out the natural goofiness of supernatural situations, and the exaggerations that come to the fore.
The movie is not exactly scary as such, though. There are no crappy jump scares and it won't leave you quivering in bed at night afraid of being bitten. It's more about the characters' terror than terrifying the viewer. Whether this is good or not may be up to the individual.
It's also a movie somewhat laden with tropes, you can predict 90% of the scenes as they come, but at the same time, every last one of those clichés are so well-executed that you can't help but love them anyway.
Drive Angry (2011)
Like Shoot 'Em Up with Nicholas Cage.
This movie is unabashedly about action, a bit of gore and a lot of one-liners. It's not about complex plots or character development, and honestly you're not going to be missing it.
It's not a perfect movie, but I feel it's one of the best roles Nicholas Cage has ever had. He's a solid actor with the right script, and this is one of them.
Fichtner, as "The Accountant," reminds me of Christopher Walken, but not in the sense that his style is a ripoff. He is a great actor and every scene in the movie with him is a joy to watch.
A few scenes could use a bit of polish, and the ending honestly feels like maybe the final encounter should have lasted just a bit longer, but that's about as much of a complaint as I could make. I'd recommend this to just about anyone with a sense of humour and an appreciation for action.
The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu (2009)
Low-budget but good
This isn't a perfect movie, at places the acting and writing are a bit weak, but it's obvious that most of these people aren't hardened actors and that most of their effects are on a budget, and with that in mind, it's a damn good presentation.
It's not a movie for hardcore Lovecraft fans who'll cry if someone gets their mythos a bit wrong, as the movie(which largely loyal to the concept) isn't particularly about madness and does take its chance to have a bit of fun with the silliness inherent in just about any horror situation.
The start's a bit stuttering and not ideal, but by the end of the movie I was genuinely in love with it.
Ultimately, if you approach this movie without expecting a big-budget Hollywood execution, but instead a competent indie/student movie, you won't be disappointed.
