House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
A crazy,psychedelic ride in horror
The first film from director Rob Zombie is a crazy, original, psychedelic and psychotic story of a family of serial killers, and it is a clear homage to all '70 and '80 horror flicks like "the Texas chainsaw massacre" (a clear inspiration to this work). The story is very linear:Some boys, wandering on the streets of America, discover a local story about a crazy doctor named Dr.Satan and they decide to investigate on it.Obviously the will fall prey to the maniac. The plot is very linear but the power of this movie is in the stunning visuals, the weird atmosphere and on the crazy direction of Zombie:Crazy colors and angles, weird characters and a crash ride through '70 atmosphere. It is a weird, full of black humor, campy, crazy tale.It is a title that requires an acquired taste to be liked, but if you are able to appreciate it don't miss it:you won't be disappointed.Otherwise, stay away from it.
The Devil's Rejects (2005)
A great follow up to "House of 1000 corpses"
This movie, the second work from (ex?)rockstar and director rob zombie, follows up his debut. The story starts where the prequel left, with Tiny dragging the corpse of the last victim of the family, and seeing the police coming to the house. After a shoot out with the police with Rufus being killed,Mother Firefly being caught and Otis and Baby fleeing. This is the start for a really different movie from the prequel,a violent on the road movie, focusing on the themes of violence and revenge. This movie marks the maturation for Zombie as a director.I really enjoyed the first movie, psychedelic, original and strange but maybe too weird on some points. This one cuts off the psychedelic element (or at least confines it in a very small number of scenes),focus more the direction, boost up the character development (in particular the sheriff),the dialogues and the story, which is really interesting and unpredictable. This movie also has many inspiration from many non-horror films like "The wild bunch".The directing style is more mature and less confused, inspired by the '70 movies. Some ideas are re prised from the first (like the particular use of the soundtrack) and used in this more mature context, some others (like Dr Satan subplot) are eliminated. The second part of the movie (wich focuses more on the revenge side of the story) and the ending is simply amazing. The acting (especially from the sheriff,Baby and Otis) is wonderful and fits really well in the movie. I suggest to watch this if you liked "house of 1000 corpses" and to watch it even if you didn't liked it,because it is really different from the original. Thumbs up!
...E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà (1981)
Fulci's masterpiece
With this movie,Italian director Lucio Fulci creates a little gem made of darkness, maybe his best.Fulci here unleashes all his macabre imaginary in a lovecraftian tale, with a plot more solid than in movies like "Quella villa accanto al cimitero" (house by the cemetery). The movie however is an evolution of his previous movies so here we will find extreme violence and still some confused parts. But the visionary of this movie, supported by a fantastic soundtrack and a convincing performance of the actors and of a mysterious but well managed story really stands out, giving us a little gem of horror movies. This is high recommended.
L'esorciccio (1975)
A great parody of "The Exorcist"
This movie, directed and interpreted by Italian comedian Ciccio Ingrassia (Famous in italy for the movies made with Franco Franchi under the name of Franco e Ciccio),is a satyr of the horror hit "The Exorcist",a satyr made in an Italian way.Ciccio is an "exorcist" in a small town in south of italy. The movie opens in Iran (like "THe exorcist") during an archaeological dig, where Ciccio founds a cursed amulet. Then the scene moves to the small town in south italy where the small amulet is found by the eight year old son of the major,Luigino. The child is being possessed and begins to act strange (he destroys a tree by kicking a ball, and so on).The major calls the "esorciccio" and he by chance makes the amulet fall on the ground from Luigino, and the child returns normal. But the amulet is found by the daughter of the major...Then a circle of possessions begins. The movie jokes in an "Italian way" making impossible to understand the movie fully if you aren't Italian, but it is a funny and convincing spoof of "the exorcist". Some notes:This is the last movie that Ciccio directed and the last that he done as a solo artist. The movie was largely filmed in Ciccio's mansion due to the lack of founds.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Obscure masterpiece
This movie was a big horror hit in the mid '80 and spawned one of the most famous villains in the history of cinema the legendary Freddy Krueger. This movie is unforgettable,it plays in a very scary way on one of the biggest fear of the children:The boogeyman. The atmosphere is dreamy,we can't separate dreams from reality and Krueger is always hidden in shadows and is very creepy. This movie deals on teen and subconscious fears in a very clever way,and it's a pity that none of the sequels developed the psychological aspect deeply. The direction, the acting and the soundtrack are fantastic and the plot is very well written and original. If you want to see a horror movie with gives you a ride in the black abyss of the mind and the dreams watch Nightmare on Elm Street. You won't be disappointed.
