A Ghost Story (2017)
A good movie but difficult to understand
This is a bizarre thought provoking movie about love, tragic loss and what it is to be a human in this universe. This movie can be seen as sad, depressing and bleak as hell but it also touches on acceptance and hope. There is the existential question of what awaits after we depart this world and our perception of time.
The story is very simple and straightforward and for that reason it's quite difficult to judge the actors on their performances as their is very little to work with but what their was they did well. The cinematography is ok in parts but for me the soundtrack was what fit the tone of the movie most of all. All in all a good movie but not one I will revisit and I completely understand why people find it boring you really have to let it sink in and also some of the scenes just drag on far too long which doesn't help.
Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
Average all the way through...until the ending
Plenty of nostalgia and fan service but the attempted humour falls flat for the most part. One part that did make me chuckle was when the Sanderson sisters are in the mayors house looking for the girls and Winifred tells them to 'spread out' and Sarah takes it literally lol.
Like it says in the title I found the whole movie pretty average right up until the end when Winifred loses Sarah and Mary through the power spell and she pleads with the kids to help her. I found the whole scene...strangely heart warming in a really morbid kind of way, the score behind it all really lifted it up, it was definitely a goodbye to those characters I think. They tried to make it a kind of passing of the torch to the younger cast but I don't think there is a future franchise here I'm afraid.
It would of been nice if they could have got the entire original cast back but nonetheless it was nice to see them in their roles again and it looked like they'd never been away. Worth a watch for fans of the original just don't expect too much.
Pinocchio (2022)
Appreciate the effort but missed the mark
Not great but nowhere near as bad as some reviews would have you believe *rolls eyes*. Seriously people have no idea how to use this rating system, if anyone has voted for a movie to be less than 4 stars you can pretty much discount there review as complete rubbish and they will have no idea what a good movie actually is (unless of course you've intentionally watched a really bad b-movie or indy).
Hanks is charming as always but there is overacting from all actors in almost every scene. We all know the dialogue and songs so no surprises in that department. The cgi is ok nothing that's going to blow you away and special effects are fine they do what's needed. The score hits the right notes in the right places trying to give you that warm cozy feel good feeling.
I'm not a huge fan of the original film so this was never going to be a big winner for me but I can appreciate why people like it and it's definitely watchable, is it as good as the original? No it's not exceptional in any way just an ok watch. I'm looking forward to seeing what Del Toro does with his story and I have a feeling it will be the definitive version for me.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
Not a bad effort could be better
So as a big fan of the games I was hopeful if a little sceptical for this reboot of the RE franchise. Let's put some positives out 1st, the story stays fairly true to the games which is nice, the cast 'on paper' looks really good, I liked the fact that it's set in the late 90s and all the tech, production and soundtrack reflects that and the special effects and costume design were pretty decent as a whole. Now the negatives, the script is weak and the dialogue felt really awkward for the most part. I know it's set in the 90s but could you dial down the cheese a little bit! The weak script had a knock on effect on the actors performances which you could also blame on director (written and directed by same person). Like I said previously it's a good cast but by no means AAA actors but I have seen them perform much better in other movies/tv series so I can only blame the writing and direction for that. Now I'll end with some more positives, direction wise they did a decent job at creating some tension and as a fan service for gamers there is plenty in there for you. To summarise if I was watching with no context or knowledge of the franchise it's a very average 5/10 movie but as I'm a fan of the games and recognised a lot it gets bumped up to a 6/10 for me.
Mortal Kombat (2021)
Mortal Kombat Legacy was better
Movie started well introducing two of the best characters (Sub Zero & Scorpion) origin stories, the fight choreography was strong here. Then the movie jumps forward and makes an attempt at a coherent plot with the villains scheme to kill Earthrealm warriors before the Mortal Kombat tournament. The bland protagonists are then introduced, Cole a descendant of Hanzo Hasashi (Scorpion), Jax, Sonya & Kano who in fairness does get some pretty funny lines. The dialogue is pretty bad otherwise and the acting average not sure if that's poor direction or reflection of the actors abilities. The CGI is pretty well done but in this day and age that should be a minimum standard. The story grinds to halt at the training montage where each character tries to learn there special power, any momentum the movie had at this point fizzles out and it just barely kept my attention. So towards the end we see some nice fatalities and a decent fight scene between the two legends Scorpion & Sub Zero but the ending is poor, they are clearly trying to set up a franchise here and I wouldn't hold my breath for that. At no point in this movie was I given any reason to care about any of these characters, Mortal Kombat Legacy did a far better job of building the characters up. In summary fans of the games like myself will enjoy the gore and there's enough fan service in the movie to keep you just about entertained but as a movie it's average at best.
Deadwater Fell (2020)
Terrible ending
The finale lets down the whole series, what a complete waste of time.
Aladdin (2019)
Nowhere near as bad as some critics make out
Thoroughly enjoyed it not sure what movie everyone else was watching! Ridiculously low ratings for a movie that is never below a 5/10, Will Smith does a great job as Genie putting his own spin on a fantastic character, the only part which he fell a little short was at the end I didn't quite get the emotion I was expecting from that scene but other than that a solid performance. CGI was good, dancing and music was good. A solid 7/10 movie for me.
Triple Threat (2019)
Awful cringefest
Great cast and some of the fight choreography is ok, that's the positives out the way. The direction is shocking the camera is all over the place in some scenes. The plot is weak and full of plot holes, at one point the group of assassins attacks a police station to kill 2 mercenaries because they might ID them lol that's laughable in itself but then they take there masks off and make one of the officers tell them where they keep the prisoners and don't even kill her after! Then run through the streets with assault rifles where everyone can see them but it's these 2 specific mercs they don't want to ID them lmao. The acting is dire I actually thought it was a spoof at one point it was that bad. It's actually worth watching just to see how bad it really is as long as your expecting any kind of character development you will be fine lol.
