Reggae Music (1981)
A real treasure!
This films includes some of the most important reggae related footage captured on film, we have very little film from this era which shows more than few seconds inside the record stores of the time, Rolf's film definitely fills this gap. A very important record of the time, place, people, i only wish there was more.
Bob Marley: The Making of a Legend (2011)
Great film for all your hardcore reggae fans....
I fail to understand some of these poor reviews on here, obviously not written by true reggae fans who appreciate what Bob did for reggae. This film is a real treasure for any Bob Marley fan who would like to get a more intimate glimpse into his life. For the first time this footage is being shown in it's entirety, until now we've only ever seen short snippets of footage from this film in various Bob documentaries over the years and for the first time we get to see it all along with commentary and we get to see Esther revisit the old haunts where she used to hang with the Wailers. It's a a real gem but only appreciate by those who truly understand the importance of such footage. If your looking for a glossy commercial documentary with all the bells and whistles then you have come to the wrong place. Most of the footage was shot in the 70's on super 8 not as film, but as a record. I can;t think Esther enough for releasing this, despite her having obvious problems from the Marleys trying to stop her from using music in the film which is a great shame, they are obviously trying to spoilt her film as it's taking he limelight from the new Marley film due for release. If you love Bob Marley and what he stands for then this film is essential in your collection. Never before have we seen such intimate footage of bob in such a relaxing setting. Goo luck with the film ........
ONE LOVE
Ps Which film do you think Bob would want you to purchase? a film made by people who no nothing about reggae or a film made by his ex-girlfriend in his honour. I also wonder what Bob would have though about them using the 4.20 date as the release of this new Marley doc. Not seen this one yet but looking forward to it, i know the director has made some great films so i have high hopes for it but will see.
Heartland Reggae (1980)
Excellent film...........
One of the best films about Reggae music from the time, this film captures some of the best live reggae footage ever captured of some of the early Roots Reggae artists of Jamaica, in particular we get to see an amazing performance from U-Roy which is the only live concert footage of him available from the time. The film is part concert. Part documentary but it's edited in a a way so that it mixes in interesting and beautiful footage of the Jamaican countryside in with the music performances. Features artists like U-Roy, Judy Mowatt, Jacob Miller, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Junior Tucker. This is a classic film and one of the only films of it's kind. If you like Reggae you'll love this, Don't miss it.......
Land of Look Behind (1982)
Great Film.........
This one has gotta be one of my favourite films, apparently this documentary started out as a film about bob Marley's funeral then ended up being something else. Has a very spiritual feel about the whole thing, contains interviews with local inhabitants of the Look Behind area in JA, all of which are reggae lovers, gives there views on RastafarI and Bob Marley, then goes onto feature mutabaruka with plenty of interviews, also gregory Isaacs at his African Museum record label, he also gives a great performance and u can see just how he gets the name "The Cool Ruler", then onto a performance by Louie Lepke singing a song he wrote about bob marleys death. Also shows footage from bobs funeral and the gives a good idea of just how big an event this was showing the mass crowds that turned up that day. A Must for any reggae lover. An Excellent film.........
Die Reise des Löwen (1990)
The Journey Of A Lion
An excellent documentary, focusing on the repatriation journey of Howard Anthony Trott, a Rastafarian living with his family in the Jamaican countryside. He one day gets a letter from his sister in the UK who has hasn't seen since she was small, she offers to pay for his ticket to go to see her, the film follows his journey to the UK, his first ever trip abroad. While in the UK he meets a friend who happens to be travelling to Africa in a truck and decides to go along with him, the film captures the road journey in a great way. It's a low budget film but captures the feeling so well, one of my favourite JA documentaries. Not to be missed...........
