Slasher House 2 (2016)
Lots of fun with inventive practical effects
A really good friday night movie! Decent lead characters, great direction and some great baddies.
The Millennial Killer (2020)
Whats worse Estate Agents or Millennials?
Caught Millennial Killer at Horror-on-Sea in 2020. Its essentially about a estate agent who entices millennials to view his flat and then murders them.
Alice Mulholland who is the lead protagonist sticks out as particularly talented and Simon Berry plays a creepy introvert very well. Theres recurring elements such as the estate agent pointing out a chandelier in this poky flat and the fact that we the audience know why he is always so eager to get the millennials to view the master bedroom - the repetitiveness adds to the amusement of it all.
Should also point out that it features really good/gory effects. Perfect evening horror film festival viewing!
Pandamonium (2020)
Psycho Killer... Qu'est-ce que c'est
Caught Pandamonium at its world premiere at Horror on Sea in 2020. Mycho always have their film premieres at HOS and theres always a buzz when they do. I have to say this is definitely one of their best features - theres generally humour in their films, but Pandamonium steps this up a notch and is a full on Horror-Comedy without actually being a parody.
Every kill comes with a pun, for talking heads fans theres an amazing bit where the killer finishes off someones sentence with a lyric and it got a big laugh! The cast are all really game and actually probably has their best defined set of characters yet - theres several who really stand out as not wanting anything bad to happen to them - the characters played by Oriana Charles, Charlie Bond, Charlie Clarke, Dani Thompson and Will Jones stick out particularly as ones you hope make it to the end.
Theres an awesome cameo from Martin W Payne at the start and it has one of the best set-ups I've seen in a long time - cant spoil it, but when he gets to say his first line, its hilarious!
On the other side of the spectrum James Hamer-Morton is spectacularly dastardly and David Hon Ma Chu's physicality and one-liner timing are amazing as the stripper ripper himself. As I say though the whole cast are on-point and really do deliver excellent work here.
The film also never forgets to be scary and is brilliantly directed by MJ Dixon. Well done to all involved.
The Numbers (2018)
Brilliantly crafted portmanteau
The Numbers screened at Horror on Sea in 2020 - didn't know what to expect with this one, but what we got was a beautifully crafted film set over several distinct time periods - the thing that connects all four are "The Numbers" and Madame Mimi (a physic who predicts fates using said numbers). Andrew Elias creates three really engaging stories plus a wrap-around that somehow conceals any budget constraints they may have had. The time periods work well even on said budget and the actors are all really game. The 1980s segment revolving around a musician is a particular highlight - the actor comes across as very naturalistic and theres a brilliantly amusing scene in a bookstore.
Great scripting and direction from Andrew Elias - definitely want to check out what he does next.
Exit (2020)
Exit - perfectly made
Exit screened at the Horror on Sea festival in 2020 to a packed out screen - lots of buzz about the film going in and thankfully the filmmakers lived up to it and then some. Without going into spoiler territory the main undercurrent of the film has the potential to come across as preachy, but the script straddles that fine line perfectly in fact it comes across as a very timely meta piece about something that is very of this exact moment in time.
The performances are all really good, but in particular the lead actress (Leonarda Sahani) has a lot to portray and does so well and very naturalistically. Tony Denham as the landlord Russell is also a brilliant creation - the audience were in hysterics over every line. The lighting and cinematography are a highlight - you can tell it has been thought through and theres a very consistent colour palette, not often found with low budget films.
This is the sort of film that is awfully brave to do on a budget - it relies on you believing the performers and the situation they find themselves in - you do though; down to a cracking script and great direction.
