The Descent (2005)
Still Getting Circulation Back In My Arms
I went to go watch this movie on a night that it was dark and rainy (which is really odd, for I live in a desert).
The movie started off a little slow, but it did an excellent job at introducing us to the characters and the bonds between them. I'm sure if they didn't do this, I wouldn't have cared what happened to them.
Being claustrophobic and acrophobic (fear of tight spaces and heights) everything in the cave had me pulling at the neck of my shirt trying to breath.
Then the horror started. It was bloody, but unlike some movies, it didn't seem to be overly gratuitous. No one got naked (which is too common in Americacn films)
The only two things I would say would've made it better are : If I didn't go with a friend who grabbed me so tight in the movie that I lost Circulation in my arms ( I may re-rate it after I see it again without the grabber) If it had the original UK ending. Much better ending there IMHO.
Sei mong se jun (2004)
Nothing Normal about this movie...
"It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen" - Richie, "American Beauty" The Asian films are so different from American films. They put a different thought process behind it. They make you think about things, while many American films are just sit in the theater for 2 hours, watching nothing.
The heart of this film is everything is beautiful. It can be a purple skyscraper. An overpass. Someone dead in the middle of the street from a car accident. This movie shows the beauty of the latter, which is good, until the character becomes obsessive about these pictures. Then it becomes a nice little thriller. Not jumpy, but it is wince worthy.
At times, I almost felt bad for liking this movie so much, but it is now one of my favorite.
Flightplan (2005)
Potential not met
Imagine waking up on an airplane to find that your child is missing. Scary, right? Granted, she has a tendency to run off which freaks you out anyway, you figure, she's on a plane....Sooooo many places to hide. But wait, you're the only person who remembers you bringing her on the plane, and the rest don't even believe it happened. People try to make you think that your crazy, but deep down you know that your not. Exciting? Surprisingly, the answer is no. After one and a half hours, of this movie that just creeped along, I was glad it was over. Slow pacing, bad lines and hyper reality suspension definitely are too much for this movie. Lets hope that Jodie and Peter choose their next movie better!
The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
If Jury Duty was this exciting...
It is not in my beliefs that God exists. I've come to terms with this, but I understand why others do. I do not discredit their dogma. Who knows, I may be wrong.
If I had to go to trial over a possession case, and both sides argued as wonderfully convincingly as they did in this film, I can say that we would probably be deadlocked for a while. Usually, it seems that many films are one sided. You are supposed to feel one way about the characters. However, in the court scenes, and after the ending statements, I must say that I was indecisive.
As for the rest of the film, it may be a little over-dramatized, but it did have it's jumpy moments. For its kind, a Horror Court case, an original as far as I've seen, it is a beautiful start of a genre.
