Kész cirkusz (2005)
A real refreshment for Hungarian movie
Kész circus is a tearjerker. But you cry because you just can't stop laughing and you may even have to realize that you've got a stomachache... also caused by the incredible amount of laughter. It is the second movie of a very talented Hungarian director, who intends to show us the aspect of the inhabitants of a given segment of Budapest and their way of life. His very first film, Tesó succeeded in completing this mission, and now this special aspect is even spiced with a Guy Richie-like story and some additional characters, each worthing a whole movie. And of the characters, I have to mention Péter Scherer as Babbel, the ex-football star, and Imre Csuja as the private detective, who reminds movie geeks of Torrente... In the Hungarian-dubbed Torrente films, Imre Csuja is the voice of the "protagonist". A really, really, very funny movie indeed. It's an absolute TEN.
25th Hour (2002)
The greatest movie I have ever seen
25th hour is the movie of my life. In greatness, I can only compare it to such films as Scorsese's Goodfellaz. It is a drama, and the criticism of our society at the same time. The acting of the fantastic Ed Norton makes a drug dealer look like a human being. And maybe that's where the truth lies: a drug dealer is a human being indeed, and Montgomery Brogan is definitely one of the best examples for this statement. As the slogan of the movie indicates: "He didn't give up his dreams but postponed them for a while". And this sentence is enough to describe the whole film. Although there are some minor hints of crime fiction, it is a drama of a man, and not an ordinary criminal movie. The investigation, to find out who betrayed him, is only the framework for his personal tragedy... Besides Ed Norton, Brian Cox, Barry Pepper and Philip Seymour Hoffman also do their best in this movie, and if there would be only a single film to give the 10 to, this would be the one for me.
Fekete kefe (2005)
it is a very different movie
Fekete Keefe is a very different movie, in every possible sense. It is black and white, despite of the fact that it was born in the 21st century. Nearly all of its characters are played by amateur actors. The situations, that occur as we go ahead in the course of the story, are highly realistic and awfully surrealistic at the same time. A strange, sad movie, that was supposed to be a comedy, but tragicomic is the word that suits FK the best. Guys coming from absolutely nowhere, going and arriving to...absolutely nowhere. That's it! Fresh, and new, it worth grade 8. By the way, this film has just won the first prize of the Hungarian Film Festival, and it was definitely one of the bests.
Rosszfiúk (2000)
a great movie about the rise and further rise of an oligarch and about some miserable youths
Rosszfiúk (Bad boys in English translation) is a great movie indeed about the way a single person with the tendency to become a small dictator achieves his goals by the means of using the young criminals he should rather care about. He forms a group of juvenile criminals to ensure his position in the prison, in the leadership of the city and then, maybe later on, even in higher politics. But the facts are not that simple... And this movie is also the drama of a young guy, who lost his faith and then found it in a girl, just to lose it again... Brutal, effective, memorable scenes, combined with the best pieces of Hungarian hip-hop music. What else do we need??? So my vote is a 10.
