Our Flag Means Death: Mermen (2023)
A spectacular season finale, stellar performances
This is an epic and exciting season finale. Ed and Stede's reunion is incredibly romantic. There is a heartwarming moment where Ed reads one of Stede's messages in a bottle and both voices read the love letter together. This is followed by their beautiful beach reunion, visually paralleling their reunion in Stede's dream in episode one. The music has been chosen perfectly for the scenes and stays with you after watching. Izzy's death is devastating, particularly after his fantastic character development this season, but makes narrative sense and is executed beautifully. His final scene contains wonderful performances by Con O'Neill and Taika Waititi. This entire season has been absolutely incredible and a masterclass of storytelling! I am desperately hoping for a Season 3 renewal soon to see the completion of the intended story!
Our Flag Means Death: Man on Fire (2023)
An emotional episode
This episode contains both comedic and heartbreaking moments, and the actors' excellent performances deliver these beautifully. There are key turning points in the main romantic storyline which are portrayed superbly by Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby. As well there are some lovely character moments for Izzy. The several pieces of classical music throughout the episode complement the scenes wonderfully. The final scene is a striking cliffhanger to lead into the finale episode. I am excited to see where the story goes next! I found this episode absolutely heartrending, but it is a testament to the hardworking cast and crew that it can make the audience feel so much.

While maintaining moments of hilarious comedy, this episode showcases a much darker tone than last season and the cast and crew have done a fantastic job in making a brilliant show. The scenes between Taika Waititi and Con O'Neill are so intense and exciting, and both actors are absolutely amazing in this episode.
