Young Mr. Lincoln (1939)
Young Mr. Lincoln
As a movie I would not have necessarily picked out for myself, I was not too sure about it in the beginning. It was slow to start and was a little difficult for me to find any interest. The farther into the film it got, the easier it was for me to find interest with it. Having started this film with not a lot of knowledge about Lincoln, this was interesting to watch. I enjoyed the small comedic parts during the trial scenes.
Overall, the movie was put together very well and was enjoyable to watch. You can relate to the characters and feel where they are coming from.
Fantasia (1940)
Fantasia
Having grown up watching this movie, I was excited to watch it again now. This film was one of my favorites to watch. I wish there were more movies like this one, making stories to go along with orchestral pieces. All of the animation was beautifully drawn out and tied into the songs perfectly. Towards the middle, to me personally, I tend to get a bit drawn away when it comes to the dinosaur part. Everything before that is what I feel like is the best part of the film. The transitions from the live orchestra into the animated scenes are an interesting touch, with the short description of the animated scene that we are about to watch with the name of the piece we are going to be listening to. I will always recommend this movie to anyone who has not yet seen it because it is one that everyone should watch at least once.
His Girl Friday (1940)
Great Screwball Comedy
Is this film about a journalist leaving the journalism business? Is this film about two ex lovers trying to move on to new relationships? Is it maybe a little about both?
This very fast paced film will definitely keep you on your toes. It makes you want to find out what happens next. Is she going to go up north with her new fiancée? But then breaking news happens right in front of her face. Does she call up her old boss/ex husband to give him the news, or does she go to catch the train to Albany? Does she get herself caught right up in the mess or is she going to leave journalism behind her like she said in the beginning? You have to stick around until the end of the film to find out.
Dracula (1931)
Dracula
Although this is definitely a classic horror film, it was not one of my favorites. The way the portrayed Dracula himself was very well and you could definitely see the fascination and wonder in everyone's faces. Walking through the giant spiderweb, not seeing his reflection in the mirrors. They did not even realize that he was a vampire until the mirrors. Personally to me it seemed kind of thrown together and that it could have maybe been done a little better in the acting area. Overall the film was very good for a beginning horror film. It was very enjoyable and you could relate to most of the characters if for some reason you were to find yourself in a situation like that.
Baby Face (1933)
Baby Face
A woman who was used all of her life by men now makes a decision between power and love. She started from the bottom with a couple dollars to her name and used her looks to get what she wanted to get to the top. She decided that she was not going to be used any longer, and that she was going to use them instead. Once she reaches the top and finds a man who she falls in love with, something tragic happens and she needs to give up everything she has. But is love strong enough to make her give all of her money away? The title of this film is deceiving because you think it is going to be about a sweet and innocent woman.
Wings (1927)
Love Triangle, War Movie
This was definitely a great film. Not something I would necessarily pick out for myself, but definitely good. One thing that I did not like about this movie was how long the plane scenes were. I will say that they were really well done and they impressed me; I felt like they were a bit long. Besides that, everything was very well done. All of the actors did a very good job portraying the characters. They were all believable and anyone could relate to them. The love story that was one of the main ideas for this movie was very well played as well. The fact that both the rich guy and poor guy were both in love with the beautiful girl, but the poor guy ends up realizing that the girl he knew was actually the girl he loved. This shows excellent character development. This movie was also very long, especially for its time considering most movies were around an hour and a half long. Overall, this movie was put together very nicely and I would definitely recommend it to someone who loves war movies.
