Dark Angel: The Ascent (1994 Video)

Pretty good story
23 June 2010
I have just finished watching this and I really enjoyed it. A young demon, Veronica, defies her father and leaves hell with her dog, Hellraiser to see the world under the yellow orb with the blue roof. She discovers a world rife with sin and chooses to send those sinners to their reward in hell. Along the way she meets a young doctor in the emergency room and she moves into his flat. He finds himself drawn towards the strange girl and her innocence and certainty.

The film did have its problems - some the acting of some peripheral characters was pretty poor. On the other hand some the acting was pretty good. I liked the guys who played the two detectives on the trail of the brutal demonic killer. The guy playing doctor did a fair job too. The best thing about the film was the story with its unique take on the story of the innocent abroad in the modern world, where that innocent is an unforgiving slayer of those who commit sin.

I didn't really like this film
14 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Despite the high praise from reviews which misled me into watching this film I really did not find it a very satisfying watch.

The story seems to feature familiar elements from at least two other films - the boy killer locked in hospital most of life till he escapes and hunts down his surviving family which really shows it's Halloween influence. I think the script and the performances of the actors are the elements that really failed to connect with me. Lines were fluffed and stumbled over and screaming was used as a substitute for emoting more than once. The whole demonic thing was dropped into the film almost like it had Fallen out of another film. So much of the film was wasted in scenes of little relevance and yet very little time was used to establish that this was a demonic possession. A completely irrelevant lesbian love scene forces it way into the story for no good reason heaves itself to a climax before expiring brutally just as expected.

Ghostly cyber-terrorist is not very scary
20 April 2010
A couple of computer scientists working with the army borrow their expensive experimental computer equipment to map out a haunted prison, that was secretly used to torture terrorists to death, so they can create an authentic environment to play a virtual reality first person shooter with their stoner buddies. Turns out the prison was haunted by the vengeful spirit of a cyber- terrorist who died there. She hacks into their game system leading to exciting adventures for our plucky band of heroes.

The atmosphere of the prison is excellent, I assume it is a prison in Northern Ireland. Rachael Taylor, playing an army private, love interest and experimental subject really stood amongst the acting performances. The others were playing such very thinly written characters that we learn almost nothing about any of them. Perhaps all the other characters were merely game characters and the whole film takes place in a virtual reality game she has been playing from the start.

The story seems very similar to other films and it really pales in comparison to some of those. The ghost was okay and I suppose the CGI gore is really to be expected in the context of the film. Some of the early action sequences really do capture the authentic feel of the first person shooter games.

Good cast so what went wrong?
12 March 2010
I saw the cast list and that really was the main draw to this film.

I think it is definitely the script which lets this film down badly There are three plots in this film. While one sub-plot certainly did a nice job of setting up a red herring and lots of soft-core T&A, the third plot was off on its own little island with almost no connection to the events in the main plot. It only slowed the film right down and destroyed any tension being built up in the main plot. The main plot itself was not very original done but if more of the film was spent with it would definitely have been a better film to watch Many scenes appeared to have no connection to any part of the story at all. Most of the acting was competent but the male lead while pretty enough was just not very convincing. While Forsythe certainly acted better and got more screen time unfortunately this was all part of the irrelevant sub-plot. Actually both leads were boring sketches of characters and the more interesting supporting cast were all sidelined in favour of the nice, young, white couple. Perhaps this film did make more sense at one time but someone butchered it

miserable whiny family dynamics...
2 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
...that seem to be fooling people into seeing qualities in this film that are just not there.

Near Dark covered the same territory but with much more class, and action.

why the script kept their 'big secret' so long was a total mystery to me - I guessed it at the breakfast scene at the start of the film. By the time it was revealed to the viewer it was just a case of 'big deal, tell me something I don't know.'

I found this to be pointless movie that may have challenged the genre conventions, unfortunately those conventions are that horror films are tense and packed with genuine sense of horror. This was woeful

there's always something better to do than watch this stupid film
17 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
this film has nothing going for it i've head the phrase so bad it's funny being used about this film which just not true. it has the wost acting I've ever seen particularly the cop and the black kid, who can't even act stupid. i fact stupid sums up the whole thing. I was stupid to watch it, the cast were stupid to agree to appear, and the the producer and director are just plain stupid. the story is just lame and derivative, no surprises in the plot at all if you do put this film on to watch you will amazed at how many unpleasant jobs you were putting suddenly become attractive This review needs ten lines so i'll just say what i've already said Don't be stupid, don't watch this film

mediocre effort
16 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't hate this film, but it did itself no favours by naming itself after a collection of Robb-mystery tales that barely stretched my intellect when i read them age ten. One aspect i liked in the books was that there was none of the mad supercomputer cliché. Why did this film version of it need it. This is lazy and gutless and not something Asimov would been happy with. With the books you got the idea that a new form of life had been created and was taking a few stumbling steps towards their own morality and philosophy. The CGI graphics are amazing but then nowadays that's the same as saying 'look at those pictures: they're moving!'.
