Dexter: New Blood (2021)
Dex came back full-fledged and well seasoned.
Dexter has come a long way since 2006. If you followed the series throughout, a lot of viewers were left with unanswered questions. Personally, I did not hate the ending because it could mean that Dexter can make a return. And this return is not only well worth the wait, but completely deserving!
The contrast of the new setting is refreshing-from the warm and sunny Miami, to the cold and snowy Upstate New York. I loved the return of Deb, as well as the many other characters the show pays homage to. Every actor and new character is superb, especially the lead supporting actress-Julia Jones. Michael C Hall seems to have aged seasonably well into his acting career since the original Dexter. This makes it seem so much *scarier* and *exciting* this time around. The serial killer character is based off of a real story, which makes the story even creepier. The reboot made me rewatch the original series, as I notice all the call backs, shows they paid close attention to detail.
All in all, the reboot deserves all the love because it is soooooo worth it, for drama or true crime fans alike. I would not hesitate to watch another 5 seasons of Dexter "New Blood."
The Rental (2020)
Under-rated acting, and a modern theme.
Quite enjoyed this one. The cast is comprised of talented and under-rated actors, and the plot is especially superb. It was a modern spin on a peeping tom. It felt real, and relatable. Yet I have to mention a previous review mentioning a "flawed third act." I can attest to this, as I felt that it had a rushed ending. I almost wish the story spent less time on character development (although still integral), and more time on the tension build up throughout. Still really enjoyed the film, it makes you feel a little more aware of your surroundings, and it definitely fulfilled my horror quarantine fix!
The Master Cleanse (2016)
Creature feature
People with issues go on a retreat to find the negativity theyve created, is not what they expected.
This film contains a sleep-away retreat plot, a small love story, as well as a comedic undertone. I really enjoyed the storyline, it feels original. Character development and conclusion could've been much stronger and more dramatic.
Fun watch.
The Silence (2019)
Can you hear the plot holes?
I didnt hate the acting, in my opinion, these actors are decent in most other films. What really bothered me were the plot holes. Nothings really ever explained, not even in the news-scenes. The scene changes and scene transitions were quick and unorganized. I found my self asking "why?" very often. Not to mention, the ending made it seem like this was a pilot episode for a tv series. I was confused as to why these creatures can hear a car running but not talking lightly or walking. And also why wouldnt the family take their small problem solving skills to larger scales to desecrate the entire species instead of living amongst them? (Like the wood chipper, for example). The cult was a little too drastic and it made the movie feel rushed. I thought it wouldve been more realistic to just have a person want basic access to safe shelter, rather than to hostage "a fertile daughter." Similar to the quiet place, but it felt rushed with too many plot holes! 5/10 for good acting, but poor scructure.
The Witch in the Window (2018)
Drama with horror elements
The actors in the film were very good, but they spend a lot of time building characters to have them fizzle out. I very much liked the story line, although its left with many plot holes. No explanations other than "shes a witch." They give you a vague background of her, they add flies to the set, but dont really complete her story. Is she dead inside? Is it the house istelf? Is she a witch or just a bitter old lady? I also very much enjoyed the creepy atmosphere in the beginning, as well as the way the wrapped up the ending. Just wanted more explanation.
Attack of the Tattie-Bogle (2017)
Enjoyable!
I stumbled upon this quirky gem, I wish it was a full length movie. With that being said, it was perfect for the allotted time. A to-the-point cabin horror flick, with a very nice twist. Its low budget, but the score and acting are done well. Worth watching for those underground horror fans who need a quick fix. 7 stars for great plot and acting, just wanted it to be further developed!
The Clovehitch Killer (2018)
Fimiliar Killer
This is a fantastic, fictional take on a real story. The film is filled with similarities to a true-crime-legend. The story is told from the point of view of a young boy who wants to believe in his faith, as well as his strong family bond; yet he is confronted with the harsh realities of evil. Starting off as a slow burn, leaving me to consider it to be mainly a drama, containing horror elements. 8 stars for excellent acting, solid execution, factual references, and lingering after-effects.
Hereditary (2018)
A Refreshingly New American Horror Classic
I give it a great rating because the atmosphere and ambiance was as good as the classic horror plot. The acting was as good as the cinematography. I watch so many horror films, and this one had me guessing as well as kept me intrigued. Aside from other user critics, I was not bored for one minute, the movie was an emotional roller coaster. At the same time, at the edge of my seat and me screaming of freight. Great watch. Be prepared. Havent seen one like this in a while.
Slumber (2017)
Great concept, falls short.
The concept of a doctor studying demons during sleep paralysis could create a very strong plot; although there was very little climax in this film. The main actress was talented, the supporting actors were not bad as well. With that being said, the scenes were repetitious, and not very scary. I also wish they wouldve touched on the scientific side of these studies, instead of a google search: Folklore.
Giving it a 4 because of a clever premise but in the end, lacked backing it up. Not a bad film if you want to be entertained but not frightened.
