Rather Boring
12 October 2016
I did not care for this film. It was only funny sometimes, rather brooding most of the time, and all and all just another movie about a bunch of New Yorkers. Yawn. They called their improv troupe 'The Communes' but a better name for them would be 'The Communists' because this movie was about people working better together and about how that does not work in New York because, hey, this is the Big Apple and it's a dog eat dog world out there. No one was supportive of anyone in this film, most of all the biggest commie of them all and she was suppose to be the nice one. This movie might be decent enough to watch on Netflix if you don't mind fast forwarding to the few clever bits, but all in all, I would not even suggest bothering to do that. Pass.

Atmospheric

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of those movies that the trailer makes the movie look way better than it actually is. Having said that, this movie is not a disappointment, but it lacks a certain something...say a reason. Mostly this movie is an atmospheric romp through a really long Polish wedding that keeps getting chased around in circles either by the weather or by the family trying to hide the fact that the bridegroom is 'not feeling well'. The music in this film is fun and keeps the gaiety up and I did enjoy the juxtaposition of extreme happiness and utter despair as expressed via the lead actress. She was the only one who was not ready to give up on her lover, though, she, like everyone else, 'barely knew him.' I got the impression because the groom was so new to everyone that they were just ready to dump him and forget about him, and for that, this movie lacked a certain genuine humanity. The ending confirmed my suspicions. I also suspect that the director found himself in a dark place in his head after making this film and perhaps related a little too much to the lack of humanity and compassion in the world....

The Rum Diary (2011)

Only if nothing else.

This movie has some redeeming moments, but overall is just so-so. Seems ACTED. Not natural or all that convincing. The film goes in a lot of directions, but not one single direction. And didn't I see Johnny Depp be this character before in Fear and Loathing? Now that was a good movie. This one isn't. I saw this movie on a cold rainy day while visiting Montreal. I remember the seats at that theater being wildly uncomfortable and the only thing that kept me from walking out of this film was the fact that it was crappy outside and this movie was the best choice of the bunch. Overall, I think both me and this movie both wanted to find a more comfortable theater and go watch something else.

Maggie's Plan (2015)
6/10
Not the worst movie in the world.

Warning: Spoilers
Okay, my first impression was...that guy looks familiar. Where have I seen him before? His movements look so familiar....wait, is that...Ragnar Lothbrok? And he's selling pickles? Okay, where will this movie go 'cuz now I'm watching it.

And....it goes where so many pretentious New York movies go....into that realm where adults are BFFE's and living a life that can not possibly be lived if this movie was filmed in the suburbs of say, anywhere that isn't New York.

I didn't find Julianne Moore's and Ethan Hawke's relationship all that convincing. Or maybe it was poor development of Hawke's character that was the problem. It is implied that he was once (maybe?) as ambitious as his wife, but not so much anymore? They just came off as a mismatch. And Maggie's character wasn't built strong enough to bat on that power duo's team. And what was with the kumbaya polygamist mothering with the two women? Suddenly, all is well in their world? Aggh, New York, I guess. At least that's what the writer wants us to believe.

In this movie, people talk a lot, rather fast, and they all have a tendency to mumble. I found that distracting. It's not a terrible movie to sit through, but it might make you want to eat some good pickles.

Total Fun-ness
25 September 2016
I am not big on the zombie genre, thinking 'enough with the whole zombie thing already' camp. BUT...this movie is just too much fun to watch that it makes one more zombie movie incredibly tolerable. If this is the last zombie movie ever made, it will send zombies out with a bang. Okay, maybe it'll be the last zombie movie I'll ever see. Unless there is a sequel. Did I read that there was a movie before this one called "Seoul Station"? Ah, I just read that Seoul Station is an animated film, and I am not big on those either. But, I'll have to find it and watch it now. And now I want to rewatch 'Snowpiercer' and '28 Days Later'. Actually, I want to see 'Train to Busan' again already.

Joyful little film
25 September 2016
This film just makes me happy. It is whimsical, clever, adventurous, cinematic, and a little unpredictable which makes it highly watchable. A no fail film. The actors are unassuming and they just grow on you as you find yourself becoming rather attached to them emotionally. Living in the US, it is refreshing to see scenery shot in New Zealand that is not mythological 'Lord of The Rings' style. There is something that is very honest about this film. It's been a few weeks since I watched this film in the theater and I find myself still thinking about it. A film is good if it sticks in your brain afterwords as a lingering good memory.

approach with an open mind

Warning: Spoilers
I don't understand why this story is being told to a bunch of young children?! Perhaps in France, stories about a sordid love affair between siblings is completely suitable as a bedtime tale. As an adult, however, I think this (true) story is engaging (pun?). The movie is filmed exquisitely and the actors are convincing in their affections. I did actually enjoy the occasional intrusion of modern devices, such as a 17th century gentleman driving a vehicle filled with hookers when you least expected it. It was neat to see the 17th century juxtaposed with the 21st, and I rather appreciated it as something unique and different. It takes guts to insert creativity that the viewing audience might rebuke, so kudos to the director who went for it. It is not like this movie was tackling the most conventional topic to begin with, so I say, go for it.

Head-On (2004)

My Favorite Movie
19 September 2016
Since this is my first IMDb review, I am starting it with Head On. It is the only movie that I watched once through and when the credits rolled I just sat there, numbed, and decided to watch it again, and hit play and watched it a second time. I don't think that I even got up to go to the bathroom. I couldn't move. I didn't want to move. I just wanted to watch this again.

There is just 'something' about this film. The crazy intro, the lead actor that you wonder the whole time if he's just some alcoholic that they pulled off the street to play the part, the eclectic combination of Turkish and German mashed as one, the genuine love, the genuine hate, the love of life, the desire of death, the humanness of it all. With out a doubt, this is a movie to watch. Again.
