Midnight Mass (2021)
Wow!
One of the most enjoyable dramas I've seen in a long time. I can usually predict the direction a show is going, but with this drama it was very unpredictable how it unfolded. The acting was great and mise-en-scene was very well done. I highly recommend giving this drama watch.
The Liberator (2020)
Not Band of Brothers
Let's leave the World War II epics up to the cast that made band of Brothers and the Pacific. Lame animation like this should not be used in the telling of such important historical stories. It is cringe and horrible to watch.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)
Missed Opportunity
Although I enjoyed some aspects of the film, I firmly believe it was a missed opportunity. There is a certain level of responsibility involved when a film maker is bestowed with such a stellar cast. The film dialogue, editing style, and character development, must be
carefully considered. I don't think they put much consideration before embarking on this film.
There are certain film techniques that historically just don't work with this type of story. One of them is fast-editing and interspersing different timelines in hopes of telling an extended epic adventure within three minutes of screen time.
For this film's fantasy genre, and adaptation of a already classic film/story, a more detailed and subtle approach would have made this film much higher praise. When you have highly skilled actors and actresses let them perform. Give us time to soak in the mise en scène, learn about each character, and the time to understand and process the story.
The overuse and poor application of CGI is another fail with this film. How is it possible that film directors don't understand that the poor use, and over abuse of CGI takes the imagination out of the film's creatively constructed world? Film makers please remember that less is more, and that the mind can easily notice trickery. One of the things that makes the most timeless films is the film's ability to make us imagine we are really there, that the mise en scène is a real world that we as viewers have the pleasure of visiting. For example, doesn't everyone want to be a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry?
Martian Land (2015)
Oh my goodness
I can't believe I just saw this movie on television in South Korea. They usually only play Hollywood blockbusters films. This film is a failure of epic proportions. Lowest budget of all times. The only thing that would have made this film awesome is if it was a space porno film. Then at least the film would be considered the highest budget porn film to date. Then perhaps the actors performances would be worth watching. One can only wish lol. Enjoy the film.
Spectral (2016)
Poor writing
I just can't get over the fact that one guy developed and mass produced brand new weapons and armor in the middle of a wartime city with zero resources. Perhaps creating one piecemeal gun would be unreasonable but forgivable. However creating state of the art suits and weapons in such a manner and quantity, is just insulting to the viewer and horrible writing. They could have done so much better with the budget.
IO (2019)
Where is my ending?
I had high hopes for this film from the trailer. I feel like the trailer did a great job at tricking me into spending my evening watching the entire film. There were parts that I enjoyed, but I was waiting the entire film for some sort of resolution. The ending was so abrupt and contradicted the direction of the film. One line by actor Anthony Mackie who played Micha mislead me to think there is going to be a completely different ending. He was telling a story of his final moments in his relationship with his wife, and then he made a point of saying that he would never let that happen again and that he would take care of Sam Wolden. Then in the end he just floats away on his balloon leaving her there alone to die. And I was lying in bed this morning imagining Sam Walton giving birth by herself to the baby that Anthony Mackie impregnated her with. Come on Netflix I know you can do better than this with your screen writing.
