The Mighty Ducks (1992)
A really good movie, best of the trilogy
I really like this movie out of the three Ducks movies because to me, this is the only one that feels like a genuine movie to me. A movie that was made from the heart. The reasons for it? There are two of them that stick out to me.
Gordon Bombay goes through one hell of a transformation. He goes from a drunk lawyer to reconnecting with his old love and facing a demon that has haunted him up to now. Even the introduction scene carries an ominous feeling. The goalie facing the young Bombay looks more like a menacing monster; as well as it should be since it represents a horrible memory for the man. I remember being scared of that scene as a child, just cause the goalie looked so scary.
His character's transformation over the movie is the heart of this film. It's a protagonist who has a REAL arc - beginning, middle, and end. It's all carried out with such poignancy as well. Emilio Estevez does great acting.
The child actors do a good job. I mean, they're KIDS, and this is a kid movie...but they pull it off nicely. The kids who play Charlie, Fulton, Jesse, and Banks especially. They make you take their characters seriously, which is different from a normal kids movie.
The kiddy parts don't make me cringe, but make me smile. I guess because it's not overdone.
Sorry to say, but the other two movies to me relied too much on either hockey action or gimmicks (although I DID like D3's grittier hockey action and more serious story with Charlie). They didn't have the heartfelt story that this one did. It's all balanced out to entertain the little kids, but Gordon Bombay's arc is one for the adults.
I also miss the kids that would end up not being in the future movies. In D3, when Gordon says that the Ducks were unchanged since the beginning, I cringed. I guess I'm the type to cling to sentimental values like that.
This was the best movie out of the trilogy to me. That's because it felt like a REAL movie.
Monster Farm: Enbanseki no himitsu (1999)
cool show
I remember this show. I liked it. Compared to other anime out there, it may not seem like much, but I find it to be an entertaining adventure story nevertheless. At the time, I also liked Pokemon and Digimon, but I remember thinking this show was better than both of them. True, the monster designs are a lot more plain than either show, but I still liked this show the best for some reason. When it aired on FOX Family, I was disappointed to see that only 26 episodes were dubbed, but later on in the year they ended up being there, which made me very happy. What surprised me was that the show started out kind of kiddy, but it actually gets darker and more emotional as it goes on. My only regret is that I never got to see the third season. But, anyway, I'd recommend it.
My favorite characters were Hare and Suezo, they were funny, haha!
Oz (1997)
Oz
Oh, man...........OZ. Here is a show that you will watch and never forget. It's truly a gem, with characters of all shapes and sizes and backgrounds coming together in a heated room where the only option is to combust. Oz is truly a show that grabs you by the throat and tosses you into prison (even though it's not realistic to prison life at all, according to some people who have been in prison). Nevertheless, it's a show not to be missed filled with characters and plot lines you will never forget. This is probably one of the most original shows to come out in the late 90s-early 2000s. It was a show that struck terror into the hearts of all those Emmys, and yet critics ALWAYS praised the show for how well-acted it was and how amazing the show got. It was a show that struck fear into the hearts of viewers, yet many could not help but look at what they were seeing. Truly it was the first show of its kind to have the impact that it did. To this day, it goes under-appreciated and underrated, but never forgotten (obviously due to the numerous Oz comparisons that critics and people alike constantly dub on Fox's new Prison Break).
Personally, I will admit that in the middle of season 4, it began to lose a lot of steam (where some plots became bland and unfitting, if not ludicrous). But then again, even then the show has moments of brilliance scattered throughout. I can't enunciate anymore just how great the show is. You must see it for yourself. This is something I guarantee you will never see again in the history of TV.
