Flowers for Algernon (2000 TV Movie)

Not as good as expected
5 October 2022
When Charlis and Alice came out of the movie after seeing Anna Karenina, he said, "Boy, they sure made a mess out of that book!" That was the exact feeling I after watching this movie based on the short 26-page 1959 story by Daniel Keyes. They took a 26 page story that takes 20-25 minutes to read and made a movie taking 90 minutes, but with a lot less detail and little exposition to explain the finer details. The Short story was an emotional roller-coaster told in the first-person and with the last three sentences being a kick in the heart. The movie's similar ending didn't affect me in quite the same way.

Wrath of Man (2021)

Wait, what movie was this?

Warning: Spoilers
Take a quiet mystery man, who is ex-CIA/secret military unit/police/underworld who has some bad guys do something evil to him/his family/loved one/dog, and who has skills posessed by no normal man, including the ability to survive getting shot multiple times. Then give him all the weapons/equipment/vehicles he could ever need, and the ability to unerringly track down the bad guys in the middle of a city with essentially non-existant police, then throw in a secret insider giving info to the bad guys, and you have yourself a fairly entertaining, but wholely predictible movie. Spoiler: The good guy wins, everyone else dies.

Felt like a Reader's Digest Condensed Book story

Aspired to be an equal to "Tora! Tora! Tora!" or "Battle of Britain" but fell far short. Will soon be forgotten. Nice CGI, though, but since it was extensively used maybe the contributions of the B-17's, PBY's, TBD's, F4F's, F2A's, TBF's, B-26's and SB2U's could have been shown more fully. The SBD was far from the only type that took part.

Time Warp

Overall, it's an entertaining story for those who know little of the actual timeline of events but the full story would have taken a six hour movie to be accurate. So they've taken a decade-plus series of events and compressed them into a one year tale that's filled with excitement and drama.

For 60's racing fans, and antique car buffs in general, there is plenty of eye candy that should satisfy, although I'm sure many of the race cars shown are most likely CGI; it's hard to tell anymore.

Green Book (2018)

The best I've seen this year.
14 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I really can't add to the superlatives given by others here. This is simply the best movie that I've seen this year. I've given it a ten star review but would really like to have reduced that by half a star because of the inclusion of one scene (YMCA), the subject of that wasn't hinted at before, and wasn't expounded on after. Was Don gay? Who cares and what purpose in the movie was served by the suggestion that he was?

I will add the half star back by giving a shout out to David Tinsley who supplied the movie's cars. Period correct, with minor exceptions, and lending an air of authenticity to the film.

One minor point that was not explained was what happened to the rest of the trio after their final gig? Did they stay in the south or did they make it home (wherever that was) by Christmas. They did play a minor roll in the story but still, I hate loose ends.

Meh

There are films that are so bad that they're good, c.f., ""Plan Nine From Outer Space"or "Terror of Tiny Town"; this one doesn't rise to that level - it's just awful.

The one dimensional sets are matched by the one dimensional acting. The concept of a female bomber crew or fighter pilot is alright in the 21st century but far our of place in WW2. The producers might have researched some of the WW2 details for their depictions of pilot communications. Throat mics were in wide use but they did not contain a switch on the mic itself to transmit. On switches were either floor mounted buttons or a thumb button on the yoke. While official radio procedure requires an "over" at the end of transmission, this protocol simply wasn't followed in combat. The hand to the throat followed by "how are you, over" and "I'm fine, over" got old real quick.

Rated 1 only because 0 isn't an option.
