Venom (2018)
Wow, was this bad.
I really did not like this. Disclaimer: I'm not a fan of superhero or comic book movies generally. And this one really did not win me over to the genre. I saw some of the trailers when the movie first came out and thought it might be pretty good. Boy was I wrong. The attempts at being humorous fell flat. The story was pretty bland. Acting wasn't overly great. It just wasn't a good movie, I felt. But, hey, that's just me.
Vivarium (2019)
Bizarre but Amazing
Wow. I had no idea what to expect with this movie. What a weird flick. I cannot even fathom how a person would come up with a movie like this, but I'm sure glad that they did. Creepy, dark, bizarre, scary, sad...so many ways to describe this. But, the only way to truly grasp this movie is to watch it. And probably watch it a few times. Visually it is stunning. Acting is excellent. Concept is fantastic. Just, a really great movie.
12 Monkeys (2015)
So Disappointing
Oh man, I had high hopes for this. But, I've gotten four episodes in and am close to abandoning it.
12 Monkeys was one of my favourite movies. Still love it. Rewatched it last night in fact. Somehow, the creators of this show have managed to completely cut out everything that made the movie interesting, quirky, humourous, thoughtful, bizarre, intriguing and so worth watching. How on earth did they manage to do that? They gutted it and are trying to pass off this bland and boring reinterpretation as 12 Monkeys. The acting is not overly great, and for many of the characters I would not have picked those actors for the roles.
I'm disappointed.
Lost in Space (2018)
I WANT To Like This....But....
Oh man, there are some really cool things about this show. Awesome space stuff, cool special effects, great concept, wonderful videography, great settings. The biggest downfall is the darn Robinson family. I don't know why I dislike that family so darn much. They are the most annoying family in space!
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
Pretty Good Little Family Movie
Took my sons to see this. I liked it! It was hilarious. And touching. And hilarious. And well done. Jim Carrey was a lot of fun. Sonic was excellently crafted. Decent story. All in all, just an enjoyable family flick, even if you aren't into the video game.
T-34 (2018)
Fantastic Tank Movie
Over the last year or so, I think I've seen about ten Russian movies about tanks. Russians seem to love their tank movies. Of all of them, this was probably one of the best in terms of quality, suspense, action, drama and historical interest. A great story, even if you don't like tanks.
Smallfoot (2018)
Smart little film
There was an awful lot here to unpack for an animated movie aimed primarily at kids. Good messages throughout. Terrible singing but lots of hilarity...when they weren't singing. If only they didn't sing...and just stuck to the deep messages.
Delivery Man (2013)
This one surprised me
Generally speaking, I hate Vince Vaughn. BUT, then I saw this movie and loved him in it. He did such a great job, I gotta say. I laughed...and when I wasn't laughing I was crying. A very well done film. Enjoyable. Worth watching if you want something that will tug at your heart strings.
Outpost 11 (2013)
Enjoyable Enough, But Not Brilliant
This is a nice little slab of weirdness. Not the best acting, although not bad either. Odd storyline. Fairly low budget. But there are some interesting ideas, and I love the aesthetics of it. A challenging mix of sci-fi, classic war film, horror and psychological drama. No, not great, but it kept my interest until the end and I was glad to have seen it.
The Death of Stalin (2017)
HILARIOUS!
I haven't laughed so hard at a movie in a theatre in a long time. I'm sure everyone around me was pretty annoyed. But I couldn't stop literally laughing out loud. Brilliant comedy. Top notch acting all around. Top notch writing. Worth every penny!
A Wrinkle in Time (2018)
Painful!
I have very little good to say about this movie. Granted, I'm not the target market. I'm a 44 year old male. We took the kids to see it. They liked it well enough. I loathed it. What a terrible, terrible film. I haven't read the book, but I think I will now. The underlying story was good. i liked the idea. But the execution was terrible. Bad acting all around, even by Chris Pine. And Oprah, especially, was horrid. There was this bizarre desire by the director to fit in pop songs that had seemingly no connection to what was going on in a scene. That was annoying. Everything was over emoted. I think the director thought she was creating a brilliant, deep movie. It wasn't at all. Shallow as all get out. I feel that if I had read the book it might fill in a lot of the stuff it appears to have missed. It just kind of skimmed through the story. Too much time spent on trying to make it look cool and be emotional over actually making the story work. I was thoroughly disappointed. I wish I could tell people to go see this because it is wonderful that it is directed by an African American woman. But...I can't. It's just...bad.
Black Panther (2018)
Didn't Do It For Me
I understand the cultural importance of this movie. I really do. I know why there are so many people so excited about it. BUT, looking at it from my perspective? It's just not that great of a movie. The acting was bad. The script was disappointing. Visually, yes, stunning. Interesting to see the African imagery and cultural ideas woven in. It makes statements about colonialism, US foreign policy, slavery, etc, etc, basically all the social justice issues that Black Lives Matter discusses. But it doesn't make the statements well. I feel bad in saying that the person who I thought put in the best performance was Martin Freeman...a white guy. So, despite the fact that I know this is an important movie, and I want to tell people to watch it because of that...I can't. I just didn't think it was a very good movie.
Toast of London (2012)
I'm addicted
Oh man, there are times when this show has some cringe worthy moments and some pretty un-PC and outdated jokes. But, frick, it's funny. I love Matt Berry. He's brilliant. Absolutely addictive show. Love it!
