IF (I) (2024)

What an adorable film
12 May 2024
IF had plenty going for it with a great cast and good looking visuals. However upon watching IF, there's alot behind this film than just family fun.

First of all, the acting was decent, particularly of the lead actress. There were some funny moments but I did expect a few more.

The music was brilliant and expertly suited the film's themes. The IFs themselves were unique, well voiced and entertaining throughout.

There were also alot of heart warming moments.

Overall this is definitely worth a watch and I might have to go see it again as I'm sure there's things I missed on the first viewing. Go watch it at the cinema!

Challengers (2024)

Hot tennis
21 April 2024
Oozing with hot, sweaty, sexy tennis as well people, challengers is a well structured and uniquely shot movie that will truly hook in the audience during its runtime.

The chemistry between Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor is electric and is the biggest key to making this a very good watch. Without it, it would just be a standard sport drama.

However what makes this film an interesting watch for me is the music and the shots (and I don't just mean tennis shots). I've never seen shots like I have in this movie. It makes what could be a boring concept for a movie for majority of people, interesting.

Only complaint I really have is its a tad too long.

Monkey Man (2024)
8/10
Great directorial debut
30 March 2024
Got to see an early screening of Monkey Man. I had good expectations going off the trailer and they were met and beyond.

The film starts off well and builds momentum for a decent revenge arc although it is hard to follow sometimes. The shakey camera work contributes to this as well as the dialogue not being particularly clear.

However what takes this film from good to great is the final third. The music, the action, the violence, it was just so incredibly well done especially for first time director. I couldn't take my eyes off it and didn't know what to expect next.

Thank you Jordan peele for saving this from streaming as this deserves to be seen on the big screen!

Well acted but forgettable film
27 March 2024
Mother's instinct, starring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, is a film set in the 60's about two mothers who are neighbours and great friends. Their children are best friends too. All seems well when a tragic incident happens.

This sets the tone for the film however what follows is a thriller that's pretty forgettable.

It is well acted, especially by the two leads which helps emphasize the emotions both of them go through throughout the film, but that's really it. It just seems so generic with nothing really to shock you.

The overall quality of this film reminds of films that should be on streaming services.

Overall, you aren't missing much.

Argylle (2024)

Might as well called it twister
1 February 2024
Argylle is messy but fun at times and has way too many twists that essentially destroy the point of having a twist.

Starts of fine and story is interesting enough to capture your attention especially with the first twist. After that, it's just silly twists and action with way too many green screens. Some of the action is ok and is entertaining but the CGI used just hurt my eyes.

I do admit the twists took me by surprise and I did like some of them but they just took it too far.

Definitely got a Kingsman vibe from this film and I think it would have benefited from being more gory like Kingsman.

Overall not bad but not great. Probably Matthew Vaughns worst film.

Beelow average

Warning: Spoilers
I was expecting a silly and over the top action with little to no plot. What I got was silly and basic action with a plot that just doesn't make any sense and an accent that is confusing.

Let me start with the positive. The action was fine but basic. The saving grace was the final fight at the end which I thought was well done. Wish there was more of it throughout the film.

What I was hoping for (probably wishful thinking) was a memorable fight scene or action sequence but there wasn't.

The accent Jason Statham was trying do, no idea what he was thinking. It was all over the place.

Overall there was no buzz around this and should have just gone straight to streaming.

Great series throughout
4 January 2024
I started watching this mainly because Michelle Yeoh was in it. I've only watched 2 episodes so far and she's not been in it much however it has been a blast!

Great fighting sequences, good acting and surprisingly funny. The 2nd episode caught me off guard with it's funny and unique fighting sequences.

The chemistry between the 2 main actors is promising and hopefully gets to grow throughout the series.

The story is ok so far, a little hard to follow but I'm sure it will be explained better the more episodes I watch.

Will update my review once I've finished the series but from what I've seen so far, this is a surprise hit for me.

Update: this is a great series with great twists, action, acting and comedy throughout (all be it stereotypical, it works most of the time) Here's hoping for a season 2!

Almost as fun as the first
23 December 2023
I enjoyed the first Aquaman and was hoping to get more of the same with the second film. For the most part I did.

It's fun, silly at times with flaws but it's not boring and definitely not the worst superhero film of the year. The chemistry between Arthur and Orm are great (my favorite part).

The scenes between Arthur and Manta are good too. The CGI is fine but at times is very messy and hard to tell what's going on but I guess that suits the story. The story is very basic and a bit all over the place. One minute they are here, one minute they are there and nothing really connecting it.

Any potential funny moments fall flat because of the forceful nature of them. Also this film has way too many cut to black screens (I think 4 in total). Very lazy editing and could have been done better to make the film feel like it was free flowing.

Overall I think the DC universe ended on a good note but it's very clear that they need their a head of the universe (ie james gunn) so that there's and identity and its actually going somewhere. 6.5/10.

Wonka (2023)
10/10
Wonderfully musically chocolate fun
8 December 2023
I had high hopes with Wonka mainly due to the fact Paul King was directing. Paddington 1 &2 are some of the best family films ever made and their charm makes them a great watch every time. Wonka now joins that list.

First off, the production design is spectacular. It really is pure imagination. The costumes, set pieces, songs and casting were all fantastic. The pacing was spot on and no time did I feel bored or that it dragged.

Hugh Grant as an oompa loompa was brilliant but for me Timothee Chalamet stole the show. His singing and acting was fantastic and really immersed you in the Wonka story.

2023 has been a fantastic year for film and Wonka rounds off the year perfectly. A must watch!

The critics got this one wrong
4 December 2023
I don't understand how a fair critics have rated this movie so poorly.

This is a funny, feel good movie about underdogs who you route for throughout the whole movie. The characters are likeable, the music is good and mainly it's just a fun movie. It doesn't add anything to the sport film catalog but when it comes to sport films, this is definitely one of my favorites. In my opinion, it's very rewatchable.

You can tell it's a Taika waititi movie with his obvious style of comedy. It works for the majority of the movie but does sometimes feel forced or falls flat. I don't know the whole story about the American Somoan football team but as movie, I really enjoyed this story and would recommend it.

The Creator (2023)
7/10
Solid scfi with great visuals
28 September 2023
The creator was labelled in its trailers as the motion picture event of the year. In terms of visuals, it's some of the best I've seen this year. However in terms of story, it's far from it.

The visuals are great, nothing looked naff unlike other films this year. The acting is pretty good especially the child. The concept is similar (man Vs tech) but is shown in a unique and visually appealing way.

However whilst the writing and directing is good the story isn't unique. We've seen this story before.

It's a shame because it could have been so much better and a serious contender for oscars in my opinion but it just fell short.

Still a worthy watch for it's originality in visuals.

A good movie but unsure as to why it's come out now
18 September 2023
I went into this not knowing a massive amount about the GameStop stuff.

I think the film does well in showing the story but only from a high level. It doesn't go into too much detail of certain decisions or certain character arcs but I think it's good enough. However, I do think this film came out too soon considering the events only happened in 2020/21. Feel like if it came out a few years later it would have been better.

Saying all that, I think it was well acted, had a few funny moments and music choice was good.

It's not Oscar worthy by any means but it's still an enjoyable watch especially if you don't know much about the true story.

Blue Beetle (2023)

Alot of fun
21 August 2023
Didn't have too high expectations when going into this considering DC's current track record however I came out the cinema pleasantly surprised.

The visuals are great unlike DC's last movie. The acting is solid pretty much all round, especially of the Reyes family. They have great chemistry and bounce off each for funny moments and heartfelt moments. The action is decent and the music choices are great. I also think the movie is well paced and at no time didn't I think it dragged.

Only down points I'd say are: the villain is basic and not really a villain when comparing to other DC films and the plot is predictable.

Overall though a very fun and enjoyable movie experience. A shame it's going to bomb at the box office.

Dogs are funny some of the time
17 August 2023
Going into strays I was expecting a vulgar, revolting and funny experience and that's pretty much what I got.

If you like Will Ferrell comedies then you'll enjoy this. Whilst I did enjoy the film I felt some of the comedy didn't quite hit in some scenes as well as it could have but in other scenes it was hilarious and I couldn't stop laughing.

The story itself actually isn't bad and had some heartfelt moments at times. The voice acting was fine and the delivery of some of the lines was great but some of the voices didn't suit the dog (this may have been done for comedic effect though) Overall a generally funny experience. Would give it a 6.5.

Gran Turismo (2023)

Are video game films starting to be better?
7 August 2023
Went into this not knowing the background of this film but came out pleasantly surprised with a great race car driving film but also a great video game film.

If it weren't a true story, the concept would have been cool but definitely not believable and therefore no where near as good as it is.

The racing and the direction taken to display the races was particularly impressive and at no point was it unclear what was going on. The acting was ok to begin with but got better as the film went on, especially with the emotional scenes. For me Harbour was the best actor in Gran turismo.

The script was fine but did it's job well of portraying the stakes in high intensity scenes.

Not really too much to fault as a true story racing film.

Mayhem fun!
31 July 2023
What a great film this is and certainly the best Teenage My Ninja Turtles movie in my opinion.

The animation is brilliant and that kind of style really is working as of late (Mitchells Vs machines as an example). The soundtrack is great along with the voice cast (Jackie Chan being my favourite) although I did find at times it was hard to hear particular characters, especially Ice Cubes Superfly but I think this was mainly down to background noise in the film during particular moments whilst they were speaking.

The story was good but nothing ground breaking although it was great to see the turtles portrayed as actual teenagers and to see splinter as a father figure rather than a master.

There are also tones of pop culture references which work most of the time but I do think they over did them at times.

Overall this was a funny, entertaining movie experience and I'd recommend it to everyone of all ages!

Talk to Me (I) (2022)
8/10
Suspense and horror at its finest
24 July 2023
Don't normally watch horror but this came up in a secret screening. I'm glad I watched it.

Partying teens have a new party trick, being briefly possessed by saying to talk to me whilst holding a hand status. What could go wrong?

Whilst I don't think it's an original idea it definitely was very well executed and probably one of the best possession films.

The acting is very well done by all characters and the story arc of the main character is done incredibly well due to Sophie Wilde's performance but also the cinematography of her story throughout the film (don't want to give spoilers as to what I mean by this) What I also like is it doesn't do cheap jumpscares (in fact there ain't many) but more goes for the shock effect (my cinema gasped at a couple of scenes) which really works for this film. It makes it alot more impactful.

I think my only criticism is some parts of the story aren't as original as the directors think and could have gone a different route for those parts.

Overall I enjoyed Talk to Me and a great effort for first time directors.

Oppenheimer (I) (2023)

Give Nolan his deserved oscar
22 July 2023
Wow, just wow. This will go down as one of the best films of the decade. The direction and screenplay is phenomenal by Nolan and it's about time he gets an Oscar for it.

The cinematography is great and the music is brilliant. Ludwig has had some great soundtracks of late and he continues that trend.

Acting is top notch of all actors and I would surprised if RDJ and Cillian Murphy don't get nominated at least.

There has been so many great films this year which I have enjoyed in their own way however so far there is only one best picture winner and that is Oppenheimer.

Watching in imax was incredible and truly shows Nolan as one of our finest directors of the 21st Century.

Barbie (I) (2023)

A telling of modern day society through Barbie
21 July 2023
Who would have thought that a film about Barbie would be one of the most original, fresh film of recent years.

There are so many positives of Barbie. First of all, the cast is brilliant. They work very well and are perfect for their roles, specifically Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling (Oscar worthy in my opinion). A special mention to Michael Cera though for being spot on with his character.

It's funny but also unexpectedly touching and really showcases the problems with modern day society in an inventive way.

There was also surprises that were good and suited the narrative.

Some criticisms are it's drags in certain scenes and it's definitely not for everyone but I guess that's cinema for you.

Barbie is worth the watch!

Edit: actually watched it for a second time and it's just a fun movie with really detailed set designs and cleverly thought out mannerisms.

This is why they need a stunt category at the Oscars
10 July 2023
Tom Cruise and his team deliver yet again. This is by far the most intense mission impossible. With it's high intensity scenarios and edge of the seat stunts, this is the best action film in recent memory.

The story was compelling, the acting was great and the new cast members did very well with an unpredictable villain. This film along with John wick this year shoes us that we really do need an Oscar for best stunt work. The level that the stunts go in this film are insane and to know most if not all were done practically is amazing.

Tom Cruise is definitely the best stunt performer of the last decade and this just emphasises that.

Bring on part two!

An entertaining adventure that's fizzles out
28 June 2023
The 5th and final Indiana Jones film starts off very well but drags on abit too long with an average but satisfying ending.

When I sat down in the cinema to watch this I was hoping for an adventure throughout and certainly started that way. The opening 30 mins was great and set a decent tone for the film. However, the middle whilst continuing to fizzle out still brought some adventure and then ending just seemed odd. I was expecting a bigger finale with big action sequences but didn't happen.

I still enjoyed it, the music was great and the atmosphere was good but when comparing it to the original trilogy it doesn't beat them. I did enjoy it more than the crystal skull mainly because it wasn't as absurd.

Pixar's best since Soul
20 June 2023
Got to see this at a secret screening in the UK (not due out here until July 7th) As with all Pixar films the animation is simply incredible and they always seem to take it that extra step with each film they do. The level of detail always blows my mind and honestly have no idea how they achieve some of the details.

The story was typical Pixar but it worked well with the world that was created. Voice acting was good and there were some funny moments.

However whilst this is a good Pixar film, I feel the bar has been set so high that no original idea they currently come up with is going to beat their best.

None of the characters are memorable and there's no memorable scenes which is a shame but I still enjoyed it.

Jennifer Lawrence absolutely kills it!
19 June 2023
I had high hopes for this when I first saw the trailer and I'm very glad I watched it.

Jennifer Lawrence was hilarious in this and you can tell she had an absolute blast making this. She stole every scene she was in and some of the delivery of her lines were brilliant. There were many funny moments throughout, some raunchy and some cringy but in a good way.

What I wasn't expecting was there to be a few heartfelt moments so much so that it felt rather drama like. It didn't happen all that much so it's still a comedy but when it did happen, it sometimes worked with the story but other times felt like it was dragging abit.

Is it as funny as other raunchy comedy's like superbad and the 40 year old virgin? No but it's definitely close to those. A must watch!

The Flash (I) (2023)
6/10
It's fun and entertaining but with some flaws
16 June 2023
Definitely one of the better DC movies of late and I'd watch it again but it still has a few issues.

Firstly I thought Ezra Miller did a great job playing to different versions of the Flash. The younger one was definitely annoying but I think that sums up a young flash well. The best bits about this film though we're anything to do with Keaton's batman. He stole every scene he was in. In general though, I thought the acting was good as well as the story and script.

Unfortunately the CGI was just ok, it wasn't as bad as people were saying but there were definitely scenes in which is was hard to watch it was so bad.

Definitely a decent film to end on for the DC films before Gunn takes over.

Slow start but good finale
15 June 2023
Didn't really know what to expect from this other than great action and I was correct.

Film starts off slow with the background into the beasts and the introduction to the human characters but about half way through the film it picks up and I really enjoyed the final 3rd. Some great action and in my opinion some memorable moments. CGI is good as always and with most transformers movies, the script is sub par and you don't really connect with most of the new characters.

The reason the finale worked so well is because there were barely any humans involved and I think going forward for any new films they should take that narrative.

Overall good action but that's about it.
