A Hidden Life (2019)
Didn't stay more than an hour...
... because I didn't want to disturb the audience by laughing out loud. From the beginning I couldn't help sniggering, seeing those alleged Austrian farmers handling their scythes and forks like Democrats carrying banners in a Midwest caucus (and speaking likewise, though looking less tired afterwards).
Truly, the landscapes were magnificent. But the next time I go to Upper Austria, I'll probably go hiking in the Alps, rather than try to find an agritouristic farm where they still use scythes and forks. And I certainly will not check whether the movie is interesting in a German-dubbed version.
Les Thibault (2003)
Ridiculous distortion
Jean Yanne's performance is the only reason for wasting one's time watching (at most the first two parts of) this series. The.anachronistic dialogs and screenplay help turning a psychological study into a grand-guignol melodrama with some sex (through Rachel's character, whose unlikelihood is mitigated by ambiguity in the novel - when is she telling barefaced lies and when is she just twisting the truth? - but who simply becomes a loony erotomaniac in the adaptation), and a historical novel into an insignificant mumbo-jumbo that's not even funny (though Meynestrel, a character inspired by Lenin, is depicted as an hysterical clown).
