Next Friday (2000)
A Surprisingly Slow Sequel
They say sequels are never as good as the originals. This movie was no exception. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Friday, but Next Friday definitely lacked in humor, acting and storyline especially.
This would have to encapsulate one of the most simple plots I have ever seen. The prequel to this film had a better story in it, and being a fan of hood movies, better locations.
Ice Cube once again proving he is a talented person, not some lifeless rapper - turned - actor. His part was as good as his last, but some new characters in this movie did not prove to me the film was better.
I would like to give this a better rating than 6/10, but for me it was not a big hitter.
So, the sequel theory is right again. 6/10.
The Green Mile (1999)
A Wonderful Watch
I was thrilled watching the Green Mile. Such a brilliant story seldom comes around and having acting and direction to match is a miracle.
The movie featured a diverse lineup of talented actors, and having Frank Darabont as a director helped bring them to life and provided great scenes typical of the 1930's.
I was particularly impressed by the settings for the films. They mastered American ranch life in that time period and I always felt like I was in the era.
Stephen King obviously influenced the supernatural features of the movie, which were put into screen format brilliantly.
As I said, A Wonderful Watch. 9/10.
Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2005)
Easy movie to watch and Follow
Get Rich or Die Trying' was a movie I enjoyed watching. People who say that 50 Cent is the worst example of a rapper - turned - actor are wrong. When I think if the benchmark African - American actor I think of Samuel L Jackson, but Curtis Jackson's acting was nowhere near as good as his.
The movie had a good story, I enjoy rising up the ranks type story lines and this one followed the interesting turns of Marcus, a orphaned crack dealer turned rapper, following his dreams.
Many critics are giving this movie a hard time. I have seen a lot of films better than this, but I have seen a lot worse. It doesn't deserve to be in the top 250 IMDb films, but being at number 95 of 100 worst films was a little harsh.
Not a bad movie, a enjoyably watch. 7/10.
Inside Man (2006)
Great Movie to Watch Unfold
I enjoyed watching Inside Man. I thought it was an overall great movie with direction from Spike Lee getting a thumbs up and the all star cast of Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster and Clive Owen playing characters brilliantly.
Washington's character was my favourite, his personality combining a passion for his work and very witty remarks. I think Denzel really plays his roles well and there was no lacking in this movie.
At times, Spike Lee can be a little annoying. I don't think he can really quite get the dialogue right with white people, but most of his shots were done very well.
The movie has many great plot twists which are a privilege to watch unfold.
I give Inside Man an 8 out of 10. If only we could fix the few weaknesses than the film would get an easy 10 out of 10.
Barbershop 2: Back in Business (2004)
An Entertaining Sequel
Babershop 2: Back in Business was a movie I enjoyed watching. Every now and then it throws in hilarious gags, but at some points becomes very tedious. Most of the acting is done well, although Eve sometimes draws a blank along with Queen Latifah.
The plot of the movie is very simple, competing businesses and family values are sometimes easy to predict.
As with a lot of of sequels, them movie is lacking just a little bit of laughter and depth rather than outdoing its predecessor. Some "extra" characters in the original made me laugh, but with lack of them in the second I was a little let down.
I really enjoyed Barbershop 2, it combines some smart lines with great acting (with some exceptions) and was pretty fun to watch.
I don't highly recommend this movie, but if you have seen the first installment than I guess that it is a must see.
Boyz n the Hood (1991)
A Great Gangsta Movie
Boyz N the Hood is about a group of friends trying to survive in South Central LA.
I heavily enjoyed the movie, its now on my top ten films and this is not only because of the acting, which is very good, but the amazing direction. John Singleton really knows about the hood, so the movie is far from a little story, it is an epic tale of generations of life in the poorer suburbs of LA.
As I said, i really liked this movie, it deals with love, with hate and with the characters "whacky" lives.
I give Boyz N the Hood a 9/10.
Now, I'm off to buy a hat like Doughboys'!!!
Ladder 49 (2004)
Barley worth Watching...
Ladder 49 is not a very good movie.
Pheonix and Travolta are MY FAVOURITE ACTORS but they failed to prove themselves in this movie.
Its not all their fault though, the direction was rubbish.
At times it is a nice movie to watch, but, 90% of the time it isn't.
I have no problem with people who like this movie. I am not against it. Its just not very good.
So, if you wish, rent or buy the movie, but my advice is not to see it.
Anyone agree with me?
Thankyou...
The Shining (1980)
A REAL Movie...
Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is a REAL movie. I really enjoyed watching the plot thicken and being scared to death. I was reading about the movie right here on IMDb and was getting scared just by looking at the goofs!!! The Shining was probably the only horror film to actually scare me. The acting is brilliant (I think Jack Nicholson is much better in thrillers than in comedy/romance) with everybody putting on lifelike performances which explains why I was so afraid. Scatman Crothers is always brilliant and little Danny Lloyd plays the "possesed" son of madman pretty well...
From the moment Mr. Torrance says "I've been here before" (Or something like that) it got interesting...
The movie is always making you think, all the unexplained ghosts are very mind bending and Kubrick illustrates how he wants you to ponder over the existence of the apparitions...
Well I throughly enjoyed The Shining and was also throughly spooked.
9/10
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Epic
I just wanted to write a quick review that basically sums up the film. EPIC: Never again will a film come around that redefines a complete decade of cinema and culture.
It was the first DVD I ever paid for and I never look back and wonder why I did so. The new 10th anniversary DVD is fantastic with all the extras and deleted scenes and such. QT is the best director around and he has inspired me to take up that job. He makes it look like it is fantastic to have the joy of making a movie but it is also very very fun.
As for the guts of the film, the acting is brilliant, the script genius and the way that it has been filmed is pure magic inspired only by Tarantino. The way the stories merge is amazing and the plot is fantastic.
Please watch this movie whenever you get a chance and please enjoy it, as I said it did change cinema forever.
I think it is the eighth best film on the IMDb rankings and I agree. Its great.
