[Bio - Vote history - Favorite films - Favorite stuff - Favorite actor/actress performances]
A film bio:
A friend of mine had a big brother with an excellent taste in films and a large VHS collection of them. Most of those I like to this day, titles such as The Shining, Little Big Man, Take the Money and Run. I was also fortunate to be a kid at a time of E.T., Return of the Jedi and Back to the Future. That was followed by mostly mindless formulaic action and horror crap for about a decade and a half. Then I came to the realization that I no longer wished/had the time to see most of the new crapola, instead focusing on the older good stuff I'd not seen. Still on that road I guess...

Favorite stuff:
Actors (all time): Theresa Russell and Errol Flynn. Beauty / handsome, charismatic and very few crappy flicks. Triple threat!
Actors (modern) Saoirse Ronan. Nice to see a talented actress growing up in the acting business. Loads of interesting roles. First caught my eye around Atonement. Johnny Depp. Many genreflicks which I love. Almost always a glint in his eye, which is how it should be. (Finland: Leea Klemola & Ville Virtanen)

Directors (modern): The Coens, Lars Von Trier, Tim Burton, David Fincher (Finland: Aki Kaurismäki)
Writers (all time): Paddy Chayefsky, William Goldman

Critics (all time): Roger Ebert (Finland: Peter von Bagh, Helena Ylänen)

Kainuu 39 (1979)
A different war.
Synopsis: Small finnish village gets occupied by the soviets in the fall of 1939. The villagers end up working together with the occupants, especially since the soviets have among them finnish speaking propaganda people.
Extraordinary film. 'Kainuu 39' stars amateurs from the historical region the film tells about. The casting process is shown first thing in the film, creating a strong distancing effect which however curiously starts to vanish in the mind of the viewer, as they get sucked into the fates of the villagers (think 'Dogville'), despite the amateur acting. Magic of movies, and certainly the most original film about WW2 ever made in Finland.
