Dark Skies (2013)
Enjoyable
A kind of cliché but otherwise very enjoyable movie. It does not introduce anything new to the genre, but has some nice twists here and there. It will entertain and give you a few jump frights, but that's about it. Recommended for anyone who is a fan of sci-fi thrillers.
The Witcher (2019)
21st Century Morals
These are 21st century people going about their businesses in medieval costumes. Except the protagonist himself nobody else seems to have a sense of belonging. The acting feels forced and pretentious, as with the abundant nudity and sex scenes. It could have been a somewhat watchable series hadn't it been for the cringe humor and ridiculous dialog.
The Society (2019)
Interesting Premise - Boring Characters
I really wanted to like this series finding the idea of a 'lord of the flies' type of story set in a parallel universe is fascinating. The big problem of the "Society" is the boring and unconvincing characters. Save Campbell the psycho, everybody else in that town is as boring as it's architecture. It's nearly impossible to relay to any of these people. The female protagonist is just unlikable and plain stupid. Her entourage of wimpy friends aren't helping either. None of these people seem to have any agency of their own, they just seem to offer their useless opinions and then bow down to the queen, who herself is incapable of making up her mind. That until out of the blue she decides to put a bullet through some kid, further reinforcing the suspicion that she is responsible for her sister's death as well. The curly minority 'follower' struggles to present himself as the tougher of the bunch, but generally fails miserably. Then you got the 'nerdy' guy who will always back down, even though he seems to know more than everybody else. You cannot like these people, you'd rather spend your life on your own in an alternate universe than with any of them.
The only slightly rewarding bit is the coup in the final episode, but still leaves you wanting as it doesn't result in a lynching of the former socialist 'regime'. These 'teenagers' are too placid and devoid of passion. I am not looking forward to a second season.
Hush (2016)
Unlikable heroine, boring script, this film will make you hate cats.
Fair acting, a simple plot, a tiny taste of gore and two predictable characters in an overused setting. So you got the comely lady in distress, somewhere in the forest, a red riding hood in her own right, terrorized by the big bad wolf, in this case, a far from intimidating baldie with a penchant for medieval weapons. Other than that our villain has zero depth, no background, no motives, just a dude who enjoys killing.
Of course in this genre, you expect the seemingly fragile heroine to somehow prevail against all odds, depending solely on her own resources. It would have been an average film, had it not been for our cute protagonist been such an unlikable character. Even her disability does not make you feel any compassion for her, as she allows her neighbor and apparently good friend to get murdered at the very beginning of the film, and becomes the reason the former's boyfriend gets murdered as well, seconds before delivering the decisive blow that would mean her salvation. She watches the poor struggle while wounded to save both of them, without intervening even while odds are on their side. However, when the life of her equally unlikable pet is in danger, she will knowingly sacrifice her only chance at getting a good shot at the villain. Maddie is not only stupid but also a heartless cat lady, which disregards human life and has a disturbing fixation to the fluffy feline. Maddie, we hate you. Towards the end of the film, I disliked Maddie so much that I was actually wishing for a deviation from the formulaic version of the story and see her tortured and maimed by the villain. Unfortunately, Mike Flanagan who wrote this boring script failed to deliver. Maddie kills the baddie and lives happily ever after with her stupid cat.
Enemy (2013)
Pretentious Nonsense
There are so many "explanations" on this title on the web, that one cannot keep track. Don't worry about spoilers you won't find any here. Not that if you found you could make sense of this nicely filmed but ridiculously narrated story. Boring acting, hard to believe characters, a story that needed tons of work, everything is a mess.
There's a niche audience for this garbage, that friend of yours who goes about with a beret and a reddish scarf enjoying a fair trade latte will probably love it, the rest of humanity better stay away from this "Kafkaesque", so to say malarkey.
There is no beginning, middle or end to this time waster of a "movie". Nothing entertaining and above all nothing thought-provoking. You're better watching corpses decompose than dedicate any of your time to this film.
