Holby City (1999)
It has gone down the toilet
I enjoyed Holly City when I started watching it many years ago. The characters were great, there was plenty of suspense and intrigue. I used to look forward to watching it. Sadly no more. It has become like a soap opera. The characters are self absorbed and petulant. In earlier days the characters had more going for them. The latest lot are poorly acted and moronic and have no class. The plug needs to be put on this show before its ratings go down any further. God help anyone who checks in to that hospital. Staff are too busy bickering, discussing their personal lives and trying to get one up on each other.
Sorry for Your Loss (2018)
Verbal Diarrhoea.
Not even Elizabeth Olsen and Janet McTeer savalge this series. The first series showed some promise with the developing story however, by series two, it had derailed. Elizabeth Olsen's character, Leigh was the most self absorbed, selfish person ever and she constantly derailed her nearest and dearest, with no thought for their emotional well being, at the expense of her sorry journey of grief, trying to pursue answers. Her whiny voice and total self absorption, got increasingly annoying as the series progressed. Fortunately I have never encountered anyone like her in my own lifetime. I could not connect to any of Leigh's family. My grief came from wasting so much time watching it.
Apples Never Fall (2024)
Started promising ended poorly
This series started well and pulled me in for the first half. Sadly it is another example of a series that ends poorly leaving the viewer wondering what the heck did I just watch. The family dynamics are truly sad with each person being totally self absorbed and the Father, Sam Neill, being truly dislikeable. In the middle of that lot you have the interloper who no one questions. This, in my view, makes the series totally unbelievable. After a complicated six episodes of family dynamics, which, in parts, was full of suspense, the whole lot fell flat with several things left unanswered. This left me wondering what I had just watched.
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Good potential then it wasn't
This film had a great cast and initially started out as very promising. It builds momentum and expectations however fails to deliver. I watched it to the end and then wondered what on earth had happened. I hate that in a film, you are left wondering what the hell was that all about. The actors were individually good however the storyline let it down big time. Too many questions and not enough answers. If someone asked me if I would recommend this film to view my answer would be a resounding no, unless you like to be left hanging, after watching a film that you have invested two hours of your time in.
Magic Mike's Last Dance (2023)
I hope this is the last film
As with most films, the first is generally the best. These films have gone downhill steadily, This one was abysmal. Selma Hayek was a train wreck, in this role. She was like a spoilt, petulant, rich child. Her character made the film totally lack credibility and any sense of reality. The film was more about her than Magic Mike. Channing Tatum is great in these roles however this was totally over shadowed by the desperate housewife character of Salma Hayek. Potentially this could have been a great final film in this series. After watching this performance I think Salma Hayek should stick to Reality TV where most people are fake.
Full Circle (2023)
Disjointed
This show is all over the place. To start with I thought it was set in South Africa, whiten I first started watching it as there was absolutely no feel of New York. The scenes depicted were like in a third world country. There are so many plots going on within this that it becomes totally scattered and incoherent. Even Clare Danes cannot save this show. In regards to Clare Danes and her family, they all speak over each other and there is no cohesion with them. I have never been able to see her Mother's face due to the shadows and darkness of the filming. Why can't we see her face? I have watched two episodes and will watch no more. I am not wasting time on poorly scripted and poorly written stories. It is dark and depressing.
And Just Like That... (2021)
Just awful
I really enjoyed the original Sex and the City series and the films. And Just Like That bears no resemblance to those. I have just watched the second episode of series two and I will be watching no more. It is cringe worthy and has gone the woke way society has gone. It has gone from being s great series with glamorous stars, great fashion and sexy humour to an all time low with it seeming to revolve around sex, like soft porn. Not always so soft. Seeing Samantha lying naked and covered in sushi, waiting for her Valentine date, in one of the films was funny. This is absolute smut and quite offensive. The LGBT scenes have gone way over the top and ruin it totally. They should have stopped after the original series and films.
Platonic (2023)
Storyline good but.
Rose Byrne is terrific, as usual. A refreshing storyline ruined by casting Seth Rogen as the male lead. Totally miscast, his stupid laugh which pervades every scene. Ever since he was cast in Knocked Up, this guy has driven me nuts. He sounds like a stoner and carry's that through to every part he plays. Seth is typically cast as this sort of person, maybe that is the only type of part he can play. So, for me, this series, which could have been terrific, is totally shadowed by him and his stupid laugh. There are plenty of more younger male actors, who are funny, who could have played this part with better results.
The Diplomat (2023)
All words no action
I thought this was going to be a great series, initially. Great actors and acting. However that is entirely what the series seems to be, an act. The two lead actors use the situation as a sparring ground. Kind of cute to start with however becomes boring. Keri Russell, the lead actor, rushes around in every scene, looking slightly unkempt and with an angry look on her face. This quickly wears thin. I really enjoyed the first two episode and then it started to unravel in the third episode and, by the fourth episode I was bored and fell asleep and woke up half way through series five. I kept waiting for some action however there was none, just words.
Smother (2021)
The World's most dysfunctional family
I binge watched this series as I found it to be compelling viewing. This has to be the most crazy, mixed up, co-dependant family I have ever seen. Just when you thought there could not possibly be more secrets and lies more appear. There are no endearing traits about any of these people, they manage to create drama after drama, lie through their teeth, and undermine each other. They seem to thrive on their way of life. Of course there are always the tables groaning with food and the huge glasses of wine, most of them are never in a scene without a glass of wine. Having said all that it was very watchable.
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
What did I just watch?
I did not enjoy this film. It was dark, nasty and weird. I don't know why I wasted my time and I was left not knowing what the whole point of the film was. Good actors however that is the only positive think I can say about it. The beginning scenes should have been a big clue as to how noir and strange it was going to be. There were too many unanswered questions for me. I persevered as I thought it had to improve but it didn't. Not the sort of film to watch just before you go to bed. Worst film I have seen this year. I cannot understand top notch actors even appearing in this. Some films wreck themselves by trying to be too clever and deep. I do not recommend this film to anyone.
Inside Man (2022)
Strange
This is one of the weirdest series I have watched . WTF? Too much David Tennant and not enough Stanley Tucci. The whole back and forwards of this I found totally confusing for the first two episodes. Despite this I found it reasonably compelling just to see what happened. Many people will give up on it. Have to say I have watched a lot better. Great actors in a very confusing and unconvincing plot. David Tennant is his usual scruffy self and meant to be credible as a Vicar. Stanley Tucci is the star of the show. Like a Hannibal Lector on death row. This won't be everyone's cup of tea. You will wonder why you invested so much time.
Evil (2019)
More horror
To start with I thought this was going to be a Catholic Church meets supernatural series, instead it is full on horror/slash genre.
On a positive note the acting was great. The weak link is Kristen, the Forensic Psychologist who, as the series progressed, turned out to be more of a hindrance than help.
Don't be fooled by the "American as apple pie" look she has. What kind of Mother invites demons into her house and refuses to give up her job when she knows her children' lives could be threatened? She is totally self absorbed to the ridiculous stage. Her four children are a handful and totally disruptive and noisey and remained unchecked. This is part of the plot that could have been left out.
Each episode did not really end and it was not cohesive in that regard.
The episode where they went to the silent monastery and Kristen could not help herself by making loud noises such as laughing and hiccups, was ridiculous and lost all credibility.
In the gory parts I could not watch and felt the whole series did not need that amount of gruesomeness and would have been way better to keep it supernatural.
If you have nothing to do on a wet weekend, and nothing else to watch, it fills a gap. Otherwise don't bother.
Private Practice (2007)
Bed hopping medical drama
I got drawn into this series and enjoyed it in the main. Could have been more realistic than a bed hopping, self absorbed group of Doctors who seem to spend most of their working lives eating in the staff room and getting involved in each other's lives. Amy Brenaman's character, Violet, drove me mad with her neediness and manipulation. It also drove me mad that she always was outside the door listening in.
The Split (2018)
Excellent series
Compelling viewing. The only downside for me is what a misery Nicola Walker portrays in the lead character Hannah. She is manipulative and has the same miserable look on her face for virtually the whole series. She seems to revel in dumping on other people's lives. Wrecks it for me.
Anatomy of a Scandal (2022)
Compelling viewing.
I really enjoyed this series and watched it over the weekend. Anything with David E Kelley's name on as producer or director I enjoy. Really good cast, nice nitty, gritty, English thriller. I thought the acting was excellent and the way the present and past stories were intertwined was excellent.
Billions (2016)
Boring
I have just watched episode 4 of series 7 and will watch no more. I found series 6 really disappointing, having really enjoyed the early series. Too wordy, and the sentences are too dense. Who talks like this? It had me switching off mentally.
I decide to give series 7 a go as it was heavily advertised as "Axe is back," so I thought the Directors had seen the light and were bringing Axe back to revitalise the poor ratings. Maybe they had realised that Axe was the one who made the series. No such luck, I have been sadly disappointed as after a very brief appearance of Axe in episode one, he has not been seen again . A brilliant opportunity to win back viewers has been lost.
Landscapers (2021)
Doesn't work
A real life murder story has been turned into an artsy noir fantasy. This does not come together. As much as I like Olivia Coleman as an actress, the other actors were unknown, mainly, and not convincing. If they are going to do a production into an art type work, hand it over to Marvel.
Under the Vines (2021)
Garbage
This is absolute garbage. Had high hopes as I really like Rebecca Gibney however this is sadly missing the mark. I can't get past episode two as it is so silly and totally stupid.
Stay Close (2021)
A CompellingWatch
Good cast, good plot, plenty of intrigue, suspense and a couple of psychopaths thrown in. What more could you want? I watched this over a couple of days. Have hd hardly found nothing worth watching on Netflix for ages so this broke my drought. The one weak link I found in the series was James Nesbitt's ex wife playing his work partner. This part of the storyline was unnecessary and weak.
Luxe Listings Sydney (2021)
More about egos
Had they stuck to the detail about the listings instead of their self promoting egos it could have been a better show. Instead the content became more about their own vanity, going to the gym, teeth whitening, looking good in top range vehicles. It became fake. Unlike the New York similar show which at least is about the property and the promotion of the property, this became an embarrassing round of false egos. A shame considering there was some stunning material to work with.
Physical (2021)
Negative narration
Managed three episodes and flagged it. Much as I like Rose Byrne, I found her negative self talk overtook the show. Nothing funny here. Why is it that what people consider to be a black comedy, is always at the expense of negative and nasty thoughts about others. Not for me.
The White Lotus (2021)
Rubbish
One episode in and the best thing about this is the scenery. A bunch of unpleasant people in a surreal type situation. Who behaves like this? Even in movies?
