Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Great Authentic Star Trek
Finally, an authentic Star Trek. I've watched all the Star Treks and the core sensibility of the good ones was always heroism, character, empathy and skill. Some recent ones didn't meet these criteria at all. But this one does absolutely. It's well written, well acted and leaves you with a positive outlook. It's realistic, unlike another, where the character goes into a dissertation on her personal insecurities during a first contact; and her superior officer encourages it while the alien politely listens. Really? Anyone see a resemblance to a middle school therapy session here? Who's writing some of these?
But back to this one: admirable characters go on interesting adventures and you have a blast watching them!
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Visually Beautiful But Without Worthwhile Characters
The initial concept was very engaging but the characters are almost all without redeeming qualities - they're either boorish or characterless. There's no real heroism here which is what I watch epic fantasy for. Most characters want to do something beneficial to only themselves, they don't want to see the critical larger picture.
This feels like Lord of the Rings, but with Gandalf deciding to forget the quest and enjoy the hobbits weed instead.
This is unfortunately common in recent series and movies. Also, some scripts of some movies are so poorly written they're just one liners strung together.
I haven't read the books.
Geostorm (2017)
Really Good Disaster Movie
I like disaster movies and this was a really good one.
By their nature disaster films don't go deep into their characters, they're more about...disasters ~ on a global scale, and that was done skillfully in this case. It's perhaps not as scientifically viable as one might wish but it's very entertaining. I liked the special effects because they weren't dark, murky and vague, they were crisp and realistic. Altogether a terrific watch!
The Last Hour (2021)
Great Series
Finally a sci fi show with substance, intelligence, nuanced characters and terrific scenery. No yawnable rehash of tired subjects. It seems like it could really happen, it has that One Step Beyond quality. The shaman is really convincing.
Skammerens datter (2015)
Really Good Kid's Movie
I liked this movie quite a bit. The shamers' daughter character did a very convincing job, she looked and acted the part very well. The plot wasn't complicated, but it was interesting and the scenery and costumes were terrific. It was refreshing to see a movie with very good production values that wasn't tiresomely murky, grisly or salacious.
