Domino Day (2024)
Lost girl minus the charisma
I watched the first 3 episodes wishing I could just watch lost girl again. It's almost exactly the same, just nowhere near as charismatic and fun.
Dangerous sucubus type leading lady, in a world she is unknowing of. It's nicely filmed, nice photography. Decent acting. No one is particularly warm and interesting. I hope it continues as they could expand greatly. It's also nice seeing Manchester, although when you've lived there, you understand that they film on a series of streets, all in the same area. I worked on the street the cafe is on and all the other scenes are literally 1 min walk away from each other. Hilarious. Good luck to them moving forward. Don't be afraid to forge your own story instead of rewriting others.
Moon Knight (2022)
Green lantern quality effects, but we'll acted
I felt the subject of moonknight would have suited a film as the topics, such as mental health and split personalities was under appreciated without making much sense. I was hoping for something very cerebral like Legion (but better). Legion was very trippy and mind-bending. Ethan Hawke should have been give. More time to develop as Harrow, who could have been frustratingly passive yet completely evil, making him so difficult to confront.
Also, some of the worse effects in ages!!!! That awful CGI suit! Why? Some very basic, practical effects would have worked better. Might have taken a little bit more time, but we'll worth the effort. I enjoyed it, but felt it was a bit hollow, while also not really fitting into what the MCU in a way that meant it mattered. Hope you like it!
Great White (2021)
Long in the tooth
Roaring sharks.
Substandard special effects.
Very slow paced.
It resorts to dumb action to carry the story along.
Not good and this is coming from an avid shark movie lover!
Breach (2020)
Atrocious
Absolutely atrocious. It the year was 2003, this would have felt worth while making. At this stage in cinema, we shouldn't have to suffer such drivel!
Pandora (2019)
A shortsighted, vapid take on something interesting
The cast all look the part, Priscilla Quintana is particularly 2 dimensional with enough Botox to ensure you never see what she's feeling. The topics and writings are fair but never emboldened by budget. It is all mainly set in a setting that looks distinctly unfuturistic. Not bad tv but with some of the quality that SyFy has produced, this looks poor in comparison.
Alien Worlds (2020)
Brief minutes of beauty wrapped up in longwinded nature documentary
As stated, you are drawn in with exciting visuals and instead of dignifying the audience with a script less, visual narrative that they can make what they want of it. You are spoon fed chunky segments of very slowly filmed natural history documentary. A series that sadly will be Background watching while you scroll through your phone.
Inheritance (2020)
Long and boring
So slow, nicely filmed and acted but terribly dull.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Far weaker than Hill House
I'm not against it taking a longer, slower approach because it achieves its purpose. But the series is rife with atrocious accents!
Tenet (2020)
Long, Loud and Static
A wonderful concept, clumsily realises. I knew what to expect sadly, and wasn't excited to see it, but gave it the benefit of the doubt. I understand the concept, this wasn't lost on me, but found the method of telling the story to be a brash!? I think the concept would have been better realised with a more Blade Runner/Altered Carbon/Sci-Fi time frame or a more a drastically more artistic and flamboyant visual. It's a shaky, gritty War zone film that doesn't let you process what's happening. I felt empty at the end. Hope you like it.
Child's Play (2019)
A very clever remake
I wouldn't exactly say this was a remake in the sense of its a direct rehash of the original. It's more the case of the original idea had been given to develop by today's standards.
It in fact, greatly improves upon the original. A very clever observation on society today; in how dependant and over exposed to electronic media children are today. How technology has and does develop a crippling (literally) abundance in our everyday life. How we use technology to communicate and not communicate.
The most striking details I felt was how Chucky was in fact not evil. He was certainly a 'killer doll' however, had he been given to a young girl obsessed with pink and unicorns. The film would have turned out differently. It is what Chucky learns from his environment that influences him. He learns from what people say and what children watch. Like the scene where the kids are watching Texas chainsaw massacre and laughing; we had been shown that Chucky had been asking "are we having fun?".
Please watch this film with an open mind, it deserves to be watched with fresh eyes.
