Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (2006)
Great show
Studio 60 is funny and moving, dramatic and hilarious. For me this is currently the best show on television. I've enjoyed each episode so far and they've been getting better and better. This show is full of great writing and great acting and I always wish there was more once it's over. Thank goodness it's not a 30 minute show.
The dialogue is smart and witty and controversy is dealt with respectfully by showing us a fair portrayal of both sides of each issue. Some shows pretend they're showing both sides of each issue but they are really a thinly veiled attempt at making one side seem ridiculous and the other side the obvious choice. Not so with Studio 60.
I used to be a CSI: Miami guy on Mondays but I can't go back now.
If you haven't watched Studio 60 yet you should give it a try, you won't regret it.
Ong-Bak (2003)
Impressive stunts, childish writing
While I will admit that the fights were impressive especially in light of the fact that no special effects were used I still cannot believe anyone would consider this a good movie. It got repetitive quite quickly and I have a feeling I could see the same impressive stunt work at the circus. And was it just me or were some of the fights sped up? I'm not sure if this movie was poorly translated but the writing and dialogue was among the worst in any movie I've ever seen. Come to think of it it can't have just been translation problems because the worst lines were all the English ones.
I think a class of grade 4 students could have written a better script and then the stunts would have been showcased more effectively.
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
Many will disagree with me but...
I thought of giving this an okay score, I can admit the movie was well shot, good acting etc.. all the components of an average to good movie. But I can't be disingenuous and pretend I liked it. I didn't. I thought it was art for the sake of art. If there was some grand point to all the character changes and plot changes I missed it and I have a feeling that all my friends who said they loved it were saying that because they thought they should. Sort of like Shakespeare, I like his writing but I suspect that many who say they love it say it because they feel they are supposed to.
This movie tried way too hard to be different for me, it was neither entertaining, nor moving, nor purposeful.
