A Way Out (2018)
Special and outstanding concept with a great story!
Seeing split screen nowadays are rare and that's what caught peoples attention with this game. Playing with a friend at one couch brings many laughs and experience the crime saga together can be truly enjoyable, I think the game is just above mediocre but you still must play it. It's a special and new experience, the concept is new and while the story was okay the split screen made this game.
To begin with, the voice acting is kinda frustrating. It's so lame sometimes that it becomes laughable. The voice actors feel untalented and stiff. Character movement and shooting mechanics feel clunky. Gameplay wise it feels like an XB360/PS3 game with some bugs. There are some details that are small but still pretty bad like the prisoners coming into the prison with their own clothes. Or when Leo and Vincent are suppose to fill a cart with sheets and when you open it there are no sheets there at all. Or when Leo loses his parachute, parachutes cannot just go of like that. He also loses his guns and in the next clip he has it. Or Harvey telling his men to find the best hitman to kill Leo and Vincent, but that hitman can't even hit them with a gun when he's five meters from them.
The story is great in the beginning, but the prison escape feels way to rushed, easy and unrealistic. Love the refrences to Shawshank though. This game opens up great but loses it in the middle. The plot is not pretty well written or thought out. The plot and cliches have been used so many times and it's kinda predictable to foresee the ending. Character development both feels good and bad but most time kind of lazy. The ending is also overused.
Josef threw in so many things in this game so it felt very forced and if it's suppose to be this much stuff it should be longer.
But the story is not completely bad. It's original but we haven't seen it in a game that much and together with the gameplay it can be more interesting and fun. The story tries it best to make us empathize with Leo and Vincent by making them show feelings, their families and scenes were they talk about their lives and plans. It feels like a crime saga from the 90's and it was a long time ago I played a storydriven game like this.
Gameplay can be fun, it's very varied. Sometimes it's fast paced action, then later it's slow drama. But escaping cops, going down a torrent by boat, park core-ing through a construction site, shooting down an entire cartel and then escape with bikes. There's a lot going on and you get more than just one experience and genre.
The directing is awesome. This is were the cinematography along with the split screen plays a big role. So there's a scene in the prison were Vincent and Leo is in a fight and the camera switches between the players and makes them fight a little time each. Or when you escape trough the hospital the camera switches between the players with some satisfying camera angles and transitions. I can't come up with more examples but the directing is good as heck.
The ending is overused and predictable but the last 20 mins are still the most appreciated ones in the game. Honestly the game couldn't end in another way and that was the best way to close it. Kinda liked the sad endings.
6/10
Gears of War 3 (2011)
Brothers to the End!
The epic conclusion and ending to one of the best trilogies and the most memorable and celebrated sagas in gaming history. The father of the cover based shooter keeps the joyride up with tons of action, cool story with likable characters.
This is actually the longest campaign. I feel that is good cause then I got more for my money and I am obsessed with and me and my brother had more laughs and longer playtime is always nice - but it became a little bit more tedious this time compared to the other two. However great game.
Gameplay: Gameplay is super fun, I absolute love the cover mechanic. And swapping between covers, running while crouching to avoid bullets brings a tactical feel. As usual there are not many guns but that isn't necessary. The guns we had feels heavy and awesome thanks to the sound and their function. I mean the Lancer and the Longshot are really satisfying. Enemies might not be smart but when they're many it can be challenging which is fun. The gameplay is the best part of this game, wow. A lots of action and a thrilling ride all the way through. But became a little bit tedious and repetitive sometimes gameplay felt way too long. But the boss fights. That was a challenge on Insane and Hardcore. The best one in all Gears and that's how you do a boss fight. An epic final battle, the boss fight is one of the best parts of the game. 9.2/10.
Graphics: Beautiful graphics for being 2011, still holds up today. I mean it looks so f**** good. From dark and gritty to colorful and bright colors. I think it actually were satisfying to see brighter colors, and characters look more detailed and realistic then ever. Environments may be small but the surroundings like buildings are really well made. The world we play as feels like Gears of War. Even with light colors it's a dark bitter tone. Beautiful graphics, amazingly build up world with environments and everything. Character models look good and real. Gears 1 was grey, Gears 2 was brown, Gears 3 is yellow. 10/10.
Audio: Voice acting is professional, the soundtrack is fitting to both gameplay, tone and story. I can almost pull a comparison to Star Wars but a little darker and more serious. I feel that the soundtrack is the great along with cool effects like explosions, gunfire and everything. 10/10.
Story: This is a bit more personal story which tells a more developed story for a few characters. Like Cole going back to his hometown and remembering his time as a Trash Ball pro and everybody loved him, and no everything is just gone. Marcus looking for his father and does everything he can to save him. And Dom who is yeah Dom who suffers after the huge tragedy, he's depression and suicidal personality is described well and we have gotten an emotional connection to him and can empathize with him.
The personal parts are enjoyable to experience. It's less war this time and that can be uplifting storywise. The plot is also very dark and sad as usual. This one cuts deepest for me, god what a depressing story, what a depressing ending. The plot also gives us a final showdown were we the story also focuses on stopping the Queen - I mean finally!
The story is so more developed this time with one of the best, most memorable and saddest scenes in gaming history. This one cuts very deep and the story is really really good.
I know people complain about we didn't get any answers on the plot mysteries, like why the Locusts waged the war. Honestly that was a part of the story, leaving you there still with a lot more questions. In real life we don't get all the answers, there's still historical events that are mysteries and things we don't understand. I feel that was a good part of the story. It feels like the ending and when the credits rolls we are meant to feel empty and think: what did we accomplice? Beautifully done!
I love Gears 3. I played it in one sitting with my brother and it was the most enjoyable experience of them. I have a lot of memories from that night. Man what a brilliant game that deserves so much love.
10/10
Gears of War: Judgment (2013)
Okay game
This is the worst Gears of War. But I like that they tried telling a story of Baird and explained the events that started Gears 1. Like E-Day and the "destroying our own civilisation, sacrificing millions" part were a big part here. I didn't feel the first one explained it as much as it should that I had to read the books so it's somewhat interesting and thankful to see them explain this further.
Story: But overall it lacks on storytelling. There are no character telling. Just some dudes standing around and talking. "We did this, and we did that." There testimonies I thought should be personal are just the same. "We did this and we did that." But with different voices. The main villain is lame just as everyone else. Still there was not much going on and somehow slow and not that many scenes that made me enjoy the ride. The ending is boring. Aftermath made a better job though. It's cool to see them try something else and this time focus on Baird. Explaining E-Day and the brutal sentence of soldiers running from their positions and duty were a little bit interesting to see them dig further into. 6/10.
Gameplay: A truly fast paced and engaging gameplay that felt quicker than all the others. This fun gameplay with tons of action could be enjoying and engaging, kept the mood up. Brutal gore kills and nice weapons. Longshot feels so satisfying to use. Again great use of the covering and tactical shooting. Fun to progress through this sections of huge amount of enemies. But this is the most repetitive gameplay I've seen in Gears, fast pace doesn't keep the thrill up forever and in the end becomes boring.
AIs are stupid tough and the point as you earn stars and sets up the missions in small parts felt underwhelming and unnecessary.
Graphics/style: Again the graphics are stunning. Environments and the looks of characters and locations are elaborate. The look of the game is nothing outstanding but still looks very good for being 360. But environments are nothing special or memorable. Just small tedious sections. 7.5/10.
Audio: Music is fitting and stunning, but again nothing that outstanding or special. Voice acting is good though. They don't feel talented which is good. The sound of the game feels smooth and clean, just like the gameplay and the cutscenes. 7/10.
Overall it was very short and not much going on. Tedious, repetitive sections and an slow plot with underdeveloped characters and underwhelming ending.
Gears of War 2 (2008)
Huge upgrade from its predecessor!
I feel like this sequel is polished and upgraded in almost every scenario. GoW is absolutely better than the first one. It delivers a strong campaign and an entertaining multiplayer. This is the best Gears and one of the best campaigns I've experienced.
Gameplay: Not much have changed but gameplay is still awesome and runs smooth. The cover system, the shooting, the boss fights everything is professional made and made with so much love and passion. The game uses the covering a lot which is nice to see. The sequel to the invention of the cover based shooter keeps the style up. Well taking cover and move from place to place while tactical shooting your way through levels can both be challenging and fun. The gunplay runs smooth and feels awesome. I don't like bullet spoonges The level design is much better, it gives us a lot more variety is environments and gameplay. There's much more going on here which keeps me interesting and entertained throughout the entire campaign. Playing co-op with a friend feels epic. Sit down and experience a deep story with someone close to you is lovely, and then laugh and have fun while you shoot the heck outta da monstas. Boss fights are varied and we use different methods to kill them and they are fun and cool to face. This bigger battles are the best.
Story: The story is deep and immersive. The character telling here is interesting and every character got their own story and stuff going on around them. This campaign isn't just kick ass shooting like the first one, but also focuses on the personal struggles. Like Dom fighting for his wife which plays a huge role. The characters are more sympathetic. The story is a lot more developed with many more cutscenes that tells the tale of the bombing (sacrificing of million people), the Locust queen, the COG-army and everything. There's a lot memorable scenes and happenings going on in this five hours. It is a dark and tragic tale with a fitting bleak ending. This campaign pushed the story forward and I'm grateful and impressed. It's not often a shooter both has the gameplay and the story. Plot is interesting and well written. 10/10.
Graphics: Still the game looks very good for being such an old game. It's a mix and variety of places and the looks of them. Environments are beautiful and it's thrilling to play in this very well build up world we play in. Character models moves pretty realistic and well, their eyes also feels alive which is rare in animation. The graphics holds up and the look of the game is so brilliant! Cutscenes everything with them, the angels the cinematic touch and everything makes it look like a movie. Cutscenes look prominent as hell. Lighting in this game also caught my attention, a nice detail worth mentioning. Such a beautiful game that is nice to look at. 10/10.
Audio: I mean voice acting jump from good to mediocre. But most of the time the voices feels real and the empathy especially in deep/sad scenes are thrilling. The music and the soundtrack fits the story and the events. Early in the campaign as an army leader had an epic speech, both the voice acting and the music combined made me impressed. The sound of heavy weapons, explosives, the blood splattering, the vehicle engine, and the destruction of big and small obstacles feels so alive and overall the sound helps the game feel more alive.
Overall the game is improved. This is the Gears of War we needed, thank god we got it. Great immersive story with interesting and believable characters. Beautiful, detailed environments and thrilling sound effects that makes this game feel alive. A bleak and bitter tone that fits to the plot, and helps with provide a dark feeling which is nice. Best soundtrack and some memorable scenes I've always remember. One of the best campaigns I've experienced and when I talk about Gears of War this game is outstanding and the best!!
10/10.
Gears of War (2006)
Revolutionary and brilliant!! 10/10
This is a classic game. This spectactular shooter became an award winning game that totally lived up to the hype. So good that they made two sequels, one prequel and a spin of (Gears 4). Gears 5 is also in progress and four novels have been written. Television series/documentaries exists about this game. In our gaming history GoW is piece of art and history. Gears is one of the most memorable and and celebrated series/sagas in the world of gaming in our history.
Gears is the father and the invention of the cover based shooters. Gears of War was the start of a new era of gaming mechanics.
Gameplay: Shooting have never felt better. Tons of kick-ass shooting and tactical military-content. As I said the invention of the cover system. This game is built up by cover, you can hide behind everything. Quickly jump from one place to another. Or run while crouching to avoid bullets. This running and the fast swap between covers are very useful and fun to use. Controls are easy but very useful and good. I mean gameplay is the best part of this game. Gunplay runs smooth and feels great together with some heavy cool weapons. The gore and the chainsaw kill are amazing. Gameplay is so fun and i still return today to play this game. Bosses are nothing special, but it brings variety and joy to the game. This game is meant for co-op which is much better and funnier. Especially the split-screen which is nice to see. If you have a lovely sibling, parent, boy/girlfriend or just a friend at your home it's feels good to be able to bring up a game and socially play together at one couch. 10/10.
Graphics: 2006 this was the best looking game and it still holds up. The graphics looks promising. Detailed environments and character models. A dark and gritty atmosphere lies over this game and I love it. It is fitting to the world we play in and the story. Cut scenes are also very cinematic which is nice to see. When you're not enjoying the gameplay you can enjoy the cutscenes which looks good. For being 2006 and still holds up today there's nothing you can complain on. 10/10.
Story: Well there's not much going on in the plot. The game starts up pretty quick and rushed without any explanation of what's really going on. I mean Marcus prison sentence could be explained a lot more. I know the sequels, the books and the remaster fixed this criticism so I'm not seeing this as a huge problem but it made me confused when I first played it. This game was gameplay-focused after all.
The story that exists is interesting I must say. The trailer really made me buy this game. Marcu Fenix is breaken out of prison and sent on a mission to destroy the Locust stronghold. This is a dark tale of humanity struggle and a desperate fight for survival and peace. Gears of War brings a depressing tone to a dark bitter story. Running around in a city were civilisation and lives are gone is scary and they made it so well done. Marcus and his team feels real and believable. The humor is fun but not too comic or excessive. I know that fellow soldiers talk like that in real life to hide the fear. But running around and listen to their small dialogues is enjoyable. Their adventure and the problems they face on the way makes this little "road movie"-feeling and the heroic ending gave me goosebumps. The final train mission was the best. 9/10.
Multiplayer is super fun.
This game is a masterpiece and one of my all time favorites!
Battlefield: Hardline (2015)
Interesting concept and change of direction
The most interesting thing about Hardline is the change of direction. For the first time in this series we see something special. Set in modern day, in the city, no battlefields, no soldiers. It's a cop procedural. I found it interesting. Since we haven't seen Battlefield this way I was excited to see what was waiting.
Playing as a detective is fun and amazing. This story feels like a playable tv series with a Netflix-feeling.
Sure the story wasn't that deep or emotional in that way. But it was enjoyable to discover Los Angeles and Miami, in a gangster environment. A bit too much cliche sometimes and too less storytelling, actually the beginning of the campaign gave us some time to get to know Kai and Mendoza still. And the ending, I found it likeable. It shows were Mendoza have gotten for this point of time. And the face off between Mendoza and the "antagonist" pretty cool. And of course like the Hollywood movies this game tried to represent, it had a little twist ending. The story wasn't deep, but it was a fun Hollywood experience with evident antagonists.
Multiplayer is cool. All these game modes, this cop vs criminal style is perfect setting of the game. I feel that this game suceeded with making something special and it gave Battlefield some fresh air.
Battlefield 4 (2013)
Awesome game! (with some issues) but I still loved it
I had very fun with this game. I really enjoyed it and I love it.
The campaign is actually not that bad. Okay it's short and sometimes it felt pointless. But it has som truly good, rushing action scenes and some storytelling. We have interesting characters with their little personalities. There are variations of locations in this game. Battlefield 4 changed atmosphear in every mission and it had different gameplay in every mission.
The story was fun, and they brought back Dima which was amazing.
And the ending was fricking awesome. That whole mission is my personal favorite. The music, the parachuting, the massive shootout, all the biggest characters reuiniting in an exciting climax. Then we have the final choice. The ending is epic, storytelling and emotional.
Multiplayer is the thing though. I'm not a multiplayer guy, and I haven't played that much. All I can say that it is the game. If I wanna play Battlefield online with friends I always pick this game because it's extremly climaxing to play with friends in this game.
Battlefield 1 (2016)
One of the greater in the series!
Battlefield 1 first of all comes with a special concept to tell a story about WW1. I think they did this so good. I really enjoyed the campaign. I mean they had variations of missions, so there wasn't just dirty trenches. We had tanks, planes, variations of locations around the world. It had such interesting war stories, and although it was so short dice managed to build up the characters enoug. The stories are emotional and beautiful, every war story also brings a message. And from a historical view they made a great job. They made it so cinematic and that's a good thing!
Oh and the look of the game. Battlefield looks clean, the structure, the weapon, characters escpeccially in cutscenes.
For the first time I've actually spent much time in multiplayer with this game. I loved everything with it. This was a fresh start and a new point of view after Battlefield 4. One of the greater games in the Battlefield franchise or maybe even in this genre.
Grand Theft Auto V (2013)
Really dissappointing
I am very late to rate this game, I just noticed all the comments where people say it's "the best game ever." They gotta rethink that.
The story sucks, y'know - boring and easy. Too many missions that wasn't necessary at all. Where you have to play through boring tasks, driving through the entire map and wasting hours on things that wasn't good. All you get is instructions of each things you have to do, and finally you get tired of it. Do that, do, this. Boring missions, waste of time. Unnecessary missions that they could've dropped.
The script sucks, compared to all the other games. You only kill and rob. You are a criminal at the bad side. In Gta 4 you're a criminal on the good side. Actully what's the point of this story? Gta 4 had a plot, Niko was on a revenge mission to find a traitor, which was really great idea. In this game the whole point is planning heists. Getting rich or die tryin' which is a very idiotic message.
The characters are idiots, especially the three protagonists. I don't find any sympathy for them just because they doesn't show much feelings. Caring for characters are missing. Cheating wives, bad fathers, unhappy families, heartless people. No one to care about, maybe Trevor a little bit.
The free roam is boring too, after only a couple of hours you gets tired of it. The side missions can be really fun sometimes, but many times they can also be too predictable, unrealistic, repetitive and bad.
The properties you can buy, what's the point of it. You can't enter them or do anything special when you own them. Gta 4 had more fun things to do, like funnier activities. Fun activities in this game are missing.
And the cops are getting on my nerves. They can kill you if you're standing in front of them. Come on.
The map is huge. Maybe to huge. I mean the mountain takes to much place. I wanted more city, less country side. The city was just a small part of the map. Sandy Shores had to much area.
This game is waste of time. Far away from the best game of all time.
Jigsaw (2017)
Exciting thriller with some cool traps
Well to be the eitgth installement in a long runnin project this is kinda good! The way they build up a new world with new characters 10 years after Kramer's death, I like it. An I really like how they diceded to have a film based more on a good story, the outiside world and the investigation. It's not very much blood and gore as the latest films. The torture porn just crossed the limit, it wasn't even interesting - so thank you for not making this movie freaked out.
I like the characters, the acting is okay, the story is good. A murder mystery where you can try to guess who the killer might be. It's a mystery and a thrilling movie.
The traps are awsome. Big, brutal and high technical. But that also messes upp the timeline and a barn seems like the worst place ever to have a trial.
But it's interesting to follow these characters. The ones in the trap and the ones in the procedural side. Of course the movie wasn't necessary, I didn't want another Saw-movie, it had some bad acting and editing. It messed up the timeline and left many questions unanswered. But I still like it. I like the characters, the story.
The atmosphear and shooting style and even color palett is diifferent, that can be positive or negative.
The film may not be the best but it got my attention and is worth a watch if you're a Saw fan. It was cool to see the aswome twists and the Spiereg Brothers as directors. Shame the writers turned it into a comedy though, but it's still entertainment and it deserves 6/10 :)
And I really hope this is the last one.
